I've been painting and selling oil portraits for 45 years and of course I've watched a lot of painters on youtube. Lots of good painters but you may be the best instructor I've seen and listened to including college and university profs. You have a very straightforward and clear way to explain anything. Without taking 3 hours to do it! I'm definitely recommending your channel to friends and family.

I've watched this video several times in the last 2 days. It is so informative! Basically, I have always worked at DRAWING portraits & have done them well. When I started painting a few years ago, i figured that it was like drawing with color.... Not! That video is a font of information! So many things explained in easy to understand language & examples! Fat over lean, brush sizes, why stand so far away & what happens when too close. Not blending! Wrapping the face with color, etc. I was able to take a too tiny tracing of a face & apply the techniques & was amazed that when I looked at the painting from across the room, after a very short time, BAM! I recognized that face! First time! I think that ALOT of painting teachers have been painting for so long that they leave ALOT out that they automatically do. You answered so many questions. In college, my painting professor taught us how to stretch canvasses & clean brushes & had the still life set up & told us to paint it while he went to his studio & worked on his own stuff. I got an A- in the class, but was basically just drawing with color & knew nothing about painting. I walked away from that class extremely frustrated because I couldn't get what was in my head onto canvas. Thank you Paint Coach!

The advice you offer here is really sound for this approach to painting. The working processes you describe are very useful, especially for people starting out with paint. It is refreshing that, when talking about different processes for getting drawings down initially, you are not judgmental and list a range of methods without placing them in a hierarchy-it is often the case that people regard any form of mechanical assistance as inferior without providing reasonable explanations. Paint and be happy.

I have the version of adult adhd that makes me search out and compile lists of a vast assortment of “how-to painting” videos - which I then watch one by one for only 4-5 seconds before clicking on the next... but anyway, “!!!” Why “!!!?” Because I keep watching your entire video videos because they are so chock full of tips and you explain things in a not overly obtuse (verbose?) way. I love this channel, in short. Thank you

Hey Chris, I'm new to painting and until now have only been painting landscapes. With a need to further my learning and to understand portraiture, I found your video this morning. Truly engaging and having watched a ton of other videos on the subject, I found yours the most informative and helpful. I'm doing my first portrait today but not of anything of this world, but more a character from a certain horror flick, but I know this video will make me look at it differently. Because I started late in life I never had the talent to do this so i take my portrait photos and feed them into my InDesign program, edit to enlarge or decrease to actual head size, print in b/w and use it to trace a copy on the canvas. I know that is terrible, but there are no rules in art😎

I got more knowledge off this video than my painting classes in college. (Way) back then, they just threw us in and said 'paint'. Maybe that was to learn the tools, strokes and mixing but I found it frustrating to not get more instruction and it made me drop painting for more drawing classes.

I think portraits are the most challenging as proportions need to be correct to make the subject recognisable. Although caricature artists manage to get away with distorting proportions and still having a recognisable subject. Making a greyscale of my reference pic and also taking a pic of my painting to desaturate the colours to check tone is one of the most helpful tips in my painting journey. It's harder to learn to see tone over colour.

these are wonderful videos. I'm an intermediate experienced artist and right now I want to work on portraits but I had to go back to the basics. I'm working in the digital media, as well as I would love to start acrylics, gouache and watercolors. Thank you for making the simple stand out points not too complex, but enough for even experienced and beginners to understand. I always look for diff portrait vid tips from diff and multiple artists even if its something I've learned. I like looking at other's work and tips/techniques they list in the vid in case something catches my brain and it clicks and i be sure to take note of it. So far I've watched vids from your channel x3 this week for the first time and I love them. You have beautiful pieces of work and good learning tips & exercises. One thing abt another vid I saw, you mentioned you use a specific photoshop filter. I was wondering when you showed the filter with the color and blue. light, how did you do this? I know it must be in the adjustments region but I wouldn't also know if it was in the filtered section as well. Let me know so I can try to replicate this on some of my references!! thanks for the vid lessons!!
