Suiperb explanation and demonstration. Its especially good timing as I've been in Italy for 3 months, and have a few Venetian scenes to paint myself, and landscapes as well. How do you know which colors to pick to achieve a certain value? Because if I want to achieve a dark value to have a good contrast... the value contrast between a blue and a yellow is insanely wide apart. And the same can be said for all the other colors. They all seem to have different values.
