I love how you just jump right in for every video. No time wasted!

For the base palette, I would also include a tube of burnt umber - it usually doesn’t break the bank but helps a lot to mix warm darks, and it also mixes a nice (but a bit transparent) black with ultramarine

Yeah burnt umber is great

Bro, I love seeing your channel grow! Feels like just the other day you had 2K subscribers. I've been watching every video since those days and you've helped me a lot.

Yes, yes, yes! Funny how few art classes/teachers mention the idea of translation vs copying

Your comments about composition, seeing the mundane daily life things actually as a painting, as well as your observation about framing a painting, and of course, grinding through fundamental steps and mastering those resonates with me. Those are all true with my photography. I was pleasantly shocked the first time I spent $45 framing one of my decent black-and-white prints. It actually made me happy to see the print, ha ha. Learning the fundamentals of basic photography, composition, lighting and angle allows my mind’s eye to see the world as a photo study… it’s great! I think your approach to these instructional videos is perfect for me. You don’t spend 48 minutes talking about how to see an apple. So thank you for that!

I’m so grateful to you for putting this information on youtube. It took me a while to find a channel that explained the process of learning to paint in a clear, step by step way that resonates with me. I have hope that I’ll develop my skills and be able to make the art I want to make using your videos and tutorials. I got your brush set last Christmas which also really simplified things for me. Thanks Chris!

Such a great video!!! Very grateful. I wish I had seen this video 3 years ago! But when I was first starting I wouldn’t know how valuable you are. This whole vid was about translating.

Great lesson. Thank you. I attend courses and however very nice teachers did not explain to all students importents of composition and how to use colos only correct individually each ones. In my opinion it takes longer for students to learn on their own mistakes. I learn a lot from Your videos. THANK YOU.

Wow! I wish I found you sooner! That was incredibly put in a way that is relatable and understandable. I’ve been painting my whole life and a lot of what you said hit home with me as far as going the long way, and not knowing fundamentals. So thank you so much for that. I have subscribed and will be binging your videos now for more advice.

This is great advice, especially for beginners! I’m an artist, who mostly does watercolor paintings. I haven’t worked with oil since 2017, and I want to get back into it.

Love this video! Could you make a video for artist looking to transition from digital to traditional? I've been a digital artist for 8 years, and considerate myself an "intermediate" when it comes to understanding the fundamentals of painting (composition, form, light, color). However I have grown interested in oil paints again because I've started to feel like the screen "blocks" me from fully interacting with my art. I've watched a few of your videos already and it has been super helpful! However I still struggle with understanding how to approach certain things that are automated in digital art. I struggle with building from thin to thick because my digital brush is always thick. I also don't understand when to thin my paints with paint thinner, or with oil. I struggle with understanding what my layers should look like, as layers have a completely different function in digital. And lastly I struggle with capturing saturated colors. Digital painting really allows you to push color because ALL of the colors are right at your finger tips. However mixing paints almost always darkens or desaturates the paint. Is the only true to way to maintain saturation with paint is to not mix a color fresh out of the tube? Sorry for the long comment! I've really been enjoying diving into your channel!

10:51 People dont realize learning art is like learning a new language. Its not magic. Ask someone if they think they can learn lets say French if they tried hard? Most likely would say yes. Ask them if they could learn art? Answer is often no. People dont trust themselves in art for some reason. If you can learn a new language you can learn art aswell

I looked at one of my mixing cards and UMB and Cadnium Yellow Medium one third yellow the rest UMB then add titanium white wish I could post a picture of my card. It is UMB 7 rows down the side adding more white until almost totally white and CaD Yellow med 7 columns across the top adding more and yellow. Pure yellow at the far right It ends up being 49 squares. It took me an hour to do each card, I have 8 of my most common mixes. I mix mu own greens….Cerulean Blue might give you a warmer green than the UMB.
