ah, every singe word pure gold! I wish I was aware of all these tips a few years ago when I was struggling with re-discovering motivation. Then again I probably had, but at the time they felt like empty words; I'm afraid one has to either discover these things the hard way, or have them hammered in their head again and again until they stick. In any case, thank you for putting them out! As a remark, I would further expand the suggestion of switching subjects to shuffling painting locations, working styles and even materials/palettes too! After a few weeks of working standing, with big and loose strokes, I like switching to ultra-small, constrained pieces with a small brushes. At times I choose painting outdoors and at times I choose the comfort of my desk. I've also found that even temporarily switching to other media such as pastels, gouache, watercolors, ink, digital painting, sculpting, 3D graphics and even photography can help us see with new eyes both our subject and our primary medium of choice. This variety helps us retain momentum but equally importantly it allows us to grow in unexpected ways too; in the same way that practicing landscapes, at the end of the day helps our portrait-painting skills too.

I love how you always say to just keep going. keep practicing. It motivates me a lot to work through all of the bad art that comes out.

When someone says that a artist is Talented or Gifted, I believe it is an unintended insult! Artists may be born with the thirst for knowledge and or the will to practice. The amount of work and or play at it dictates how fluid one becomes and suggesting that he or she was born/gifted with talent is not giving credit to the hrs of work put in.

Funny when you said paint more than one at a time as I currently have 8 on the go!, As an Artist of too many years to count I can honestly say this video contained a lot of good advise and to prove the point I am watching this video as part of my engaging process and to see what others are up to :)

The content you're providing in your videos is probably the best source of inspiration. The clear concise explanations go a very long way to decreasing anxiety that could, otherwise, be a source of frustration and decreased motivation. Keep them coming please.

This is my favorite KZbin channel by far now. So motivating, inspiring.. I love listening to you and old videos I’ve seen several times already while I paint. This demo is absolutely stunning and magical.. its much more amazing than the photo and that is true mastery. Thank you so much Chris for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us. ❤️

I always feel more motivated and inspired when I have listened to one of your talks. It’s always difficult to be a beginner, particularly when you have achieved in other areas... patience can be difficult and frustrating. You are absolutely right that practice, time and even more practice is what’s needed. I look at many artists work on Instagram and I am in awe of them. I wish there was a way of getting better quicker but it really is a long game that only you can master .... hence I keep watching your videos and ploughing on 😝

I really liked what you said about changing themes and always working on getting better. I heard about stick with a subject but I am always challenging myself. Sometimes I got stuck, so it’s good to watch other people painting. I get the drive to do it again.

Glad we're all together in this! I've picked up on traditional media and landscape painting when COViD hit, because going outside is all you can ever do these days, haha. It has been very frustrating, but now I'm in a state of gambling, where paintings might be good OR bad, which is weirdly motivating.

Thanks again coach. I’m enjoying the course I bought. I have been sick with the rona, (not fun at all) the fatigue is unbelievable, I sleep a lot. I just look at my little studio and go back to bed. I’m really looking forward to “go get painting “. Thanks to you for the encouragement, sometimes we wonder if we have an impact so just wanted to let you know you do.

I think term you are looking for instead of 'enjoying' is 'being engaged in' painting. As in being not-bored, and being fully present in the process.

Thanks for this helpful video, Chris! Can you make a video on finding photo references? This seems to be my biggest struggle. Most photographs online (e.g. portrait photographs) are really professional with little shadows which are harder to paint. Do you use a specific website to find reference photos ?

I don't know.. Online communities never quite cut it for me. The interaction always remains shallow and you never get anyone's full attention. I haven't made friends with anyone online in the last 10? years. I'd love to meet some real artists whenever this pandemic blows over. Comparing your work online is also just the same issue I have with social media.. it gets me depressed more than it motivates me. Inspiration can be playing a really good looking game or watching a good movie, going outside of course, but staring at other people's paintings doesn't quite do it for me. Unless we are talking a gallery with old masters. There are just so many people on this planet and you are bound to always find the ones that are ahead of you. I think your time is best spent either painting or getting inspired.. but not comparing yourself to others.
@paintcoach3 жыл бұрын
You might be looking at it wrong and need to change your mindset. When you look at other people who are better than you it should inspire you because you see what is possible. If it does not inspire you that means you think you could never get there which means you are putting a limit on your ability. I have a painter I go paint with where I live who is far better than I am because I like to surround myself with people who will make me better. As far as online communities they can be very helpful (especially now) to get honest feedback on your work. In my facebook group people ask for honest critiques of their work and a lot of people don't pull any punches and let them know what is not working which is so great bc they can now go and make those corrections and get better.
@hgzmatt3 жыл бұрын
@@paintcoach I can definitely see where you are coming from. I've just not had a lot of good experiences when it comes to receiving feedback online. A lot of times you get nothing but your community might be very different. I'm actually a professional artist, just not with oil painting (3d, games). I guess the main thing I'm lacking at this point is practice as I have a decent understanding on where I'm falling short. As I reach a point where I'm unsure what to improve I might be more proactive and reach out to others. Thank you for elaborating however, I really appreciate it.
