Instead of putting foil around wall plate it is much easier to remove the wall plate. Seen some crazy ideas on how to cut around wall plates but this beats them all. First thing I do when painting a room is removing all the wall plates and put them in a bucket of water with some TSP. Plates get cleaned while also making it much easier to paint around switches and sockets.

Agreed. Remove all plate covers and reduce cut. Also, when it comes to cleaning naps, I don't spend any long than it takes me to get the nap off the frame and dispose of it. Naps are really inexpensive and if you use it correctly, you should only need one for your entire project. A really useful tip is to load your brush or nap with material and then wrap it in plastic anytime you have to pause painting more than 10 or 15 minutes (or for a weekend). Just unwrap and get back to work. I keep all my Lowes/HomeDepot bags for this purpose. Saves a lot of time.

Cheaper/ faster if everything goes according to plan... in old buildings outlets/ switches might have loose parts inside, worn-out screws, 70 year old insulation that will crumble, maybe even aluminium wires that break... or improperly (too much) removed insulation, so to avoid a short or shock best to turn breakers off... then you need to manage lights and extension cords.

Ok the tool you made for getting paint out of the roller is already a thing. It's called a 5 in 1. The drill trick is cool and the rolling pole is better when it's made for painting. One that extends and retracts. The comb idea is the same as a wire comp or and actual brush comb you can get them all at your home Depot or any paint supply store.

Rollers are cheap as chips. Wrap in a plastic shopping bag between use, seal with a rubber band. Don’t mess about gunking up your drill, which cost more than a roller! Chuck the roller after use. For electric switches, back plates, isolate power, unscrew about a quarter of an inch or one centimetre. Wipe off to clean. Use cling film to wrap plate, tucking it behind the plate. Saves disconnection of electric and any probs if you are a bit wary of leccy.

@vbrad51112 жыл бұрын
Right from the start, buy a decent brush...not some 89 cent throwaway from the dollar store. From there, a small stainless bristle wire brush will do an infinitely better job cleaning the gunked paint out of it. Always pull outlet and switch plates. A $4 5-in-1 tool scrapes excess paint out of covers, serves as a can opener, and a putty knife when you need it. Any reasonably decent roller handle will not come apart like that. Besides, you WANT the cover separate to make sure it doesn't stick to the handle when the paint dries in the places your water doesn't get to. A decent 4-6 Wooster extension pole will let you get most wall and ceiling work done, and will screw onto broom heads to use in the garage. This is almost as bad as tv shows showing folks how to do CPR wrong.

The foil won't make a straight line, even you can, it takes more time than taking off the cover for paint. There are pro tools to clean up the brush and squeeze the paint from roller. If painting a lot, suggest use the pro tool, easy to use, safe, and durable
@davidg.49112 жыл бұрын
You can squeeze paint from a roller for hours, especially after using it all day and they're saturated with paint. Either you throw it away or let it soak and continue to try to get the paint out. At around 3-4 bucks apiece, it's simply not worth the effort it takes to clean them. However, the idea of using centrifugal force to clean is seems like a great idea. The only problem is attaching it to the drill.

First of all…. They make this thing called a. 5 in 1 tool. Clean your roller with that. Or do it the easy way with a five gallon bucket and a jet stream nozzle for your garden hose. Secondly, get a decent brush and just cut around that fixture like a grown up. Don’t get too much paint on your brush, paint is designed to go on in two coats anyways. Thirdly, use an adjustable painter pole with the click-in roller frame. Those don’t come unscrewed while you are using it. They make them in various sizes.

Having lived in Germany, this doesn’t work the same way as American electric switch, outlet, internet, or cable plates! They for one (in Germany) operate on 220 volt systems, and 50 Hertz or Cycles. The outlets have been made so that they can be inserted into wet Plaster, and to remove them is a lot more work and can damage the wall area around the outlet! Then that leads to more repairs than you could have imagined. The fact that you have to hire a Licensed electrician, licensed plumber, licensed interior design specialist, licensed painter, and several more for interior home work, becomes extremely cost inhibitive! Fact you move into an Apartment or home, you have to bring your own kitchen cabinetry and many more things, that we expect to be part of the household when we buy it or rent it! And there are some contracts for any rental property that tell you even who you can hire to do the home improvements. Painting and Wall papering are still something that you can do without much pain, as long as you are not pounding a nail in your wall or removing outlet covers... Once at my In-laws house they were having some work done to install some outlets and switches on the wall of their kitchen just inside of the door. (where we would naturally put them here) I would expected to see for example a 3” wide cut out in the wall from the ceiling down to the outlet level 16”-18” above the floor, then across at that level to the door framing and up to the normal switch height and a box installed on the inside of the wall fastened to the inside of the door frame with some “Sleepers” to support the Drywall when it was all done you would never know that say 20’ x3” was carved out. There in this case, a chiseled passage was diagonally cut in the Face from the Ceiling to the switch and outlet! Hey it’s rock and plaster on the face... and the houses are built to stand up for 150+ years! Look at the houses that were destroyed in Ukraine the roofs are supported by Wood frameworks the rest of the houses are made of stone plaster, fiber blocks are new, like a cinder block but light and structurally strong. But I guess my point is almost lost already. The best tricks of the trade may not apply here, but they are still great ideas for overseas or in alternative building practices, to our own wood houses...
