Painting 4AGE valve covers detailed guide (Toyota Corolla AE86)

In this video, I show you a detailed guide on how to hand paint the Toyota Corolla AE86 Valve Covers, in the standard Blue Top Color Scheme. The first generation 4A-GE engine came with blue paint on the "16 Valve" letters of the valve covers. I also replaced the 4A-GE Sticker on the timing belt pulleys, and painted the exhaust header heat shield. The engine is now much more pretty and detailed.

Teng Khang Thanks, my AE86 is intended to be kept as a classic, and I really like the way they did things back then. No modern engine I know has painted rocker covers anymore (aside from ferraris or lambos)... now they all come with those ugly plastics on top, you cant see anything under there. Mechanics is beautiful, its meant to be appreciated! :-)

DJ Naz, I'd say yes. I have read on the net that you can use Hammerite to paint engine blocks and heads with very good results, even though it is not designed as high-temperature paint. All other paints should be high temperature resistant.

I just sanded them to bare metal and then sanded them with 2000 grit and polished them. Looks fantastic.

Outstanding work! I have to do this to my r19 1.8 16v cabriolet! About the music in the video: My honest opinion, I found some musics to be a little bit annoying, repetitive and distracting at the first minutes of the video. It's like an attempt to enter a deep relaxed state with the extreme chill-out music, while trying to focus on your work and what you are explaining. The other musics in the video were more "alive" and worked very well!

You can also take the spray paint spray it into empty pill containers then brush it on the letters thats what I did.

Thanks. I have the same engine in my Mk1 MR2, although it's not quite as accessible as in your bay. I was interested to see if and how you removed the plastic wiring conduit from the oil filler end of the cover as it was stopping me removing my centre cover piece. It's obvious you care for that car, even putting the 4A-GE sticker back where nobody could see it. Good job!

Matty J Well, the valve covers were actually already stripped because the engine was already serviced by the previous owner at a workshop. It looked like it was sandblasted or something. If i was doing it at home, I would use my dremel with a wire brush, however...

The headlamps on a trueno are popups while the levin headlamps are fixed like the ones in the video. Also the meanings of the names meaning thunder and lightning

Is there a torque setting for the cam cover?

I would not worry with that. The bolts are only there to hold the cover against the gasket, so just tighten them until they feel snug. The cover is aluminum and fragile, so the trick is not to overtighten and you will be fine.
