What about painting over existing gloss? Run down and then gloss if similar colour? Undercoat and gloss if not?
@brewerspaints2 ай бұрын
Hi @paul3962 - what you would need to do not only depends on the previous coating but also on the condition of the door itself. Our dedicated team are on hand to help you find the best solution for your specific project - you can contact them on 01323 576555 and they will be able to talk this through with you :-)

Can anyone explain the bit about oil vs water based primer vs finishing paint?
@brewerspaints8 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. The reason we recommend using oil primer on oil finish and water based primer on water based finish is because water and oil don't mix - they will repel each other due to the oil's inability to break hydrogen bonds in the water molecules. Therefore, they don't stick together and the paint coating may fail

@@brewerspaints thanks for the reply. In that case, my next question is - for an ash wooden front door, would you recommend going for oil or water-based? Thanks a lot!

@@swampy1234 for this type of substrate either type of product can be used - it mostly comes down to personal preference. Oil and Water based will also both have their own benefits - if you want to discuss your particular project in more detail you can always contact our customer service team on 01323576555 and someone will be able to talk this through with you for the best advice :-)

because it looked diy at best

Everything was correct apart from second glossing the red as it grins one undercoat and two glosses for red been in the trade 32 years red and yellow are the hardest colours to gloss and cover

Remove the “furniture’? In America, that means chairs, tables couches… What does it mean where you are?
@brewerspaints3 ай бұрын
Hi @WendyDenney-g7u - furniture does also mean what you described above, but in this instance it also is used to describe whatever you may "dress" the front door with, just like you use chairs, tables, etc to dress a room. Think door knockers, doorbells, handles - anything that isn't a part of the original substrate that can be taken off to enable to door to be painted more easily!

I got blasted at work by my boss for using a brush. Apparently that’s a big no, no and you’re supposed to use a roller even in all the nooks and recesses…
@brewerspaints3 ай бұрын
Hi @doudeau1988 - we would recommend brushes for use because as long as you are using the right brush for the job, brush strokes should be minimised when painted correctly and even more so if using an oil based paint. We wouldn't typically recommend using a roller for the entirety of painting a door as, especially in doors with detailed areas, unless you are overloading the roller with paint and flooding these areas (which will result in a bad finish and probably cause runs and drips) a roller would not be able to reach the same nooks and recesses as a brush would.
