This commissioned portrait was painted from life in too many sessions. I pride myself on being a fast painter, but this time I felt I was never going to finish. After having to move the hands, I struggled getting them right without my model's presence and I wanted to break my brushes and throw them out of the window. Anway, here's the demo.
My palette consists of the colours ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, alizarin crimson, cadmium red medium, burnt sienna, cadmium yellow medium and deep and titanium white. All of them are Van Gogh - Royal Talens, except for alizarin crimson, that's Georgian - Daler Rowney.
I'm using bristle Da Vinci brushes and to clean them a little bit of Gamsol.

Wonderful texture in her hair! It’s comforting to see that you also have parts of your painting you sometimes struggle with.

Another fascinating video! You struggle with her eye, you say - but isn't that what almost happens everytime we paint something? There is always something which suddenly can cause us to become nervous, even though we have painted it many time before. That is why art and the creative processes are fascinating. Brilliant painting and thanks for a great video.

Thank you! Yes, there are no paintings without struggle. The eyes especially are constantly moving and therefore difficult to capture.

Interesting process. Where did you study painting? Who were your teachers?
@annamariavargiu
@annamariavargiu 7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I studies for two and a half years at the Klassieke Academie in Groningen, but I quit because I felt I wasn't learning enough. One very good teacher I learned from in the first year was Peter Durieux, who showed me the world of composition.
