Wow! The true character, lines, and Carl Alberg’s design intentions visually explode from the boat as you so lovingly and professionally come closer to completing your refit. A different boat from the one you started with. So worth the effort to preserve the Triton. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, you and May and Buddy are really professionals. You succeeded in sailing around the world alone, wrote a number of very well written books. Became a professional shipwright and vessel builder - restorer! That is an impressive string of accomplishments.

I’ve been spraying with my craftsman 17 gallon air compressor and an inexpensive Hvlp fun with Alexseal. I had air pressure to 35 and had no issues.

James, thanks so much for this video; I am getting ready to repaint the deck on my Hunter 40 and will be using your "acetone test" to determine what paint the previous owner applied. Thanks again, Ken in St. Pete

Last year I resprayed my little trailer sailer in a spray booth with 2 pak..... it was sprayed with a low pressure gun blue on white but the blue came out with a finish like 320 grit sand paper.... it does rube down and polish up, but I thought that maybe I shot it with too much pressure but after watching your comments maybe it was not enough pressure !! I always love your vid's and the relevance to what I am doing at the time or wish to be doing.

It's hard to get a perfect finish if you don't have a lot of experience. Mine are never perfect but I found I got better results by turning the pressure up and adding the max recommended reducer or even a bit more. You need to take care the sanded primer is absolutely flat. I overlap about 50% on each pass and keep the gun 5-6 inches away. Practice on some flat panels with different settings and look at them after they dry.

Wow! pretty spectacular results. Appreciate taking the time to set up and walk us through your process and products. Often wonder with these products, how do you clean your gun, cup and fluid set? That has to be a huge job. You have some perfect technique moving the gun through the range of motion. Thanks, enjoyed... as usual.

Thanks for the comments. During the 10-15 minutes waiting time between coats I keep the nozzle clear of drying paint by spraying for a few seconds onto a piece of wood every minute or two. When finished I rinse the leftover paint out of the cup and shoot a cupful of acetone through it and then disassemble the air cap, tip and needle to clean in a cup of acetone with a toothbrush. Only takes a few minutes and there are videos they show it being done..

Whats the dark gray down on the very bottom in the water line? Is that just primer only?
@atomvoyager
@atomvoyager 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's Interprotect 2000e white epoxy primer barrier coat. The white is light gray and they sell a grey which is dark grey.

Can you tell me what spray tip size you used for topcoat Alexseal along with your 50# air pressure? I will be doing my own soon. It looked to me that your tip might have been a bit too small for the primer as you were moving quite Slowey. How did that primer lay down?
@atomvoyager
@atomvoyager 3 жыл бұрын
I don't recall the tip size but it was the standard tip supplied on the cheap HF gun. I think you're right that a bigger tip would get more primer on smoother and faster. I thought it went on smooth enough for a primer but it was slow going. The Alexseal on this boat still looks good two years later but I recently saw a boat I painted 5 years ago with Alexseal and the gloss is mostly gone from the areas of hull and deck most exposed to the sun. Under the dodger it still looks like new. I don't know if I had a bad batch of paint, too much reducer, or poor application procedure but it worries me going forward. Next time I would not add more than the recommended reducer and try less pressure and let it go on with orange peel and then sand it with 1000 grit on a 5" orbital sander following by rubbing compound. That would take care of dust and insects as well. Runs could be fixed with coarser grit to start. That would reduce the stress of trying to get a perfect finish although much more labor.

Are you able to spray gel coat? I imagine it would have the most practical results.
@atomvoyager
@atomvoyager 5 жыл бұрын
Spraying gelcoat is not practical in this situation because there is too much labor in sanding it fair and polishing. I haven't investigated it beyond that though so don't know all the pros and cons.

It was about 80 degrees that day. The manufacturer says to apply between 50-90.

Imron, Awlgrip, alexseal, which one do you prefer ? Price Comparison ? Which one is easiest to use ? Thx and been a fan for a long time. I own an Ensign and a aTriton.

I don't have any experience with Imron. I think the prices from lowest to highest are Perfection, Alexseal, Awlgrip but you can shop around to find out. I've had problems to get a good finish with Perfection and also had it lose gloss after 4 years. I usually spray Alexseal and only rolled and tipped small areas and liked the results either way. 20+ years ago I rolled a lot of Awlgrip and it was always good results but now with their new formulation it seems to be less easy to apply and lasts less long. But I've only done one boat recently rolling Awlgrip and it may have been the less than ideal conditions of painting in direct sun and wind that made difficult. If I had to roll another boat I'd try the Alexseal. For spraying I'll continue with Alexseal but would also be willing to use Awlgrip if a customer wanted that.

I've painted three boats-two with Awlgrip, one with Alexseal. The Alexseal paint has held up and remained shiny a lot longer than the Awlgrip did. And it seems a LOT harder. VERY difficult to sand and buff once it's cured. Just FYI...
