In this video I use a chemical stripper in conjunction with dry and wet sanding to remove old anti-fouling paint from the hull of our boat.

Glove up when dealing with any stripper. Sage advice.

Great video! This is exactly what I want to do with our Albemarle 28 express. We put the boat on a trailer and the old bottom paint is pointless and a hell of an eye sore. Thanks for posting🤙

This is the method I've been using on my boat but my bottom paint isn't stripping off quite as nicely as yours, so I had to do a couple applications. I'm using the stripper from total boat. Them I wet sanded with 320, 600 and 800. What I've done has turned out nice. I just wish the stripper I'm using took more off on the first application. Although, the paint on my boat may just be really heavy. Looks like around 2-3 layers. Thanks for the video!

is there a limit to how many times you can coat it and scrape it, without damage to fiberglass?

Hi...I would like to get your advice on what would be the safest and best way to remove new antifouling on a new boat without damaging the gelcoat and the process needed after that to have the hull back to a shiny surface if antifouling is not going to be reapplied?
@RandomlyAwkward1 Жыл бұрын
The paint stripper that I used seem to be pretty gentle to the hole. If you still had some residual paint that was not coming off, you could probably send it with 1000 or 2000 grit wet sandpaper in spots. The gelcoat would probably come back to a nice shine if you compounded it with a good quality product. I use a product called ChopTop from Shine Supply, and I apply it with a DA polisher from Harbor Freight and an orange foam polishing pad from Lake Country. The polishing compound cost as much as the machine and the pad. I think you’ll get really good results with that combination if you just take your time.

Pretty gentle to the hull, not the hole! I was using text to speech. Sorry…

Thank you for your reply and helpful advice 👍....would this stripper be more gentle on the gel coat more than soda blasting? ....@@RandomlyAwkward1

Didn’t like paint stripper and wife chewed me a new one for putting it on the transom. She uses a Puma stone. Removed all the way down to the ruff scratches in no time except the transom which had a stained from paint stripper. Stone was a brick like you use on grill. Don’t soak it in the bucket just use a wet rag to wipe off paint from stone.

Do you have any videos of the final outcome you would upload?

@@nickrdgz9323 I didn’t make a “final video”, but I’ll see if I can find a video that has some good shots of the hull with the anti-fouling paint removed.

Does it work on pontoons as well too?
@RandomlyAwkward16 ай бұрын
@@jahson1078 I don’t see why not. You are just removing the paint and I don’t believe it’s corrosive to aluminum. It worked really well and was pretty “green”.

how many buckets of coating were used for coating?

I honestly don’t know, but I would guess that the bottom paint had been applied several times over the years.

Are you going to strip the bottom of the hull?
@RandomlyAwkward1 Жыл бұрын
No, it’s too difficult to get to while the boat is on the trailer. The part I did was mostly for aesthetics. It’s not really a “high performance” boat so I don’t think it will matter too much.
@MBicknell Жыл бұрын
What's the point tho as youl need to re antifoul+
@RandomlyAwkward1 Жыл бұрын
I removed it for aesthetics because I’m keeping the boat on a trailer at my house so I don’t need to use anti fouling paint like the previous owner that kept it in the water all the time.
@MBicknell Жыл бұрын
@@RandomlyAwkward1 oh apologies I'm new to the industry and trying to learn. Can I ask a question with metals can you apply antifoul direct to a sigma paint? Iv heard its possible if done at the right time. Thanks
@RandomlyAwkward1 Жыл бұрын
@@MBicknell From quick research, PPG makes a bonding paint called Sigmacover that is put in between the dissimilar paint products. Here’s a link to the info: docs.td.ppgpmc.com/download/389/389/sigma-alphagen-230 Hope this helps!

Ha ..good one!!! “Back to Nature” Aqua Strip. A gallon was about $50. I’m not normally a “environmentally friendly” guy, but this stuff worked great. I bought it at a local marine supply store but I’m sure Amazon, or even the manufacturer has it.
