Actually if one is learning to draw, which is a skill needed to paint details, it does help to copy another. If you didn’t know how to draw a detailed rose that looks realistic then would it help you to draw it 100times? No. In centuries past art studies were done as an apprentice and they practiced copying the master’s work because he learned. And in the past many famous artists used a form of a light box to shine the outlines on a wall such as Michel Angelo. They were and are popular. The reason is because when we think of a rose for example our brain has a preconceived idea of what a rose looks like that hasn’t changed much since we were 3 unless someone taught us to stop calling it a rose and just draw the shapes. So yes copying helps one to improve their skills. But practicing to draw what we see without preconceived ideas is an advanced step. Nor is it kind to criticize one who uses a light box because maybe they wish to focus on painting but their mind will automatically learn by drawing it. Thank you
