Painting an AIR DRY clay sculpture with ACRYLIC paint: Airbrush and Hand-Painting Techniques

Follow along as I paint this Air Dry Clay Sculpture, with Acrylic Paint.
I will be using a combination of airbrushing and hand-painting techniques.

This is such fun to watch! I paint normally with acrylic and I just got my first kit with air dry clay and sculpting tools for my birthday. Is gesso not needed for a primer coat for the paint to last longer and not soak into the clay?

your creatures are so lovely & inspiring!! 2 questions! Do you have any tips for your air dry clay not cracking? Did you have any problem with the acrylic paint reactivating or interacting with the clay? I'm sculpting a mixed media dragon head & going to be doing details with air dry clay (but a little nervous about it breaking down or falling off)

Hi Julianna :) I have in fact had problems with this particular clay cracking before. For this sculpture I used GEDEO White Air Dry Clay. I find if I use too much water (for smoothing) it makes the clay weaker. For highly detailed worked I would recommend FIMO air dry clay, or JOVI air hardening clay. I haven't had problems with the acrylic paint reacting - as long as you make sure the clay is complete dry before you start painting :) Depending on the temperature it can sometimes take longer than the instructions say. Good luck with you dragon head.

You should! :) It's very fun and rewarding. And so easy to get started with air drying clay, as it doesn't need to be baked or molded.

Wow, nice work ! Question : the gedeo clay did not crack while drying on the armature ?.... Because I often have problems with craks...

HI Miss Treize :) Not because of the armature no. But air dry clay like Pebeo does have a tendency to crack in general, especially at very thin or thick parts (anything part that dried unevenly). To prevent this I like to let my sculptures dry as slow as possible by leaving a loose sheet of plastic over top, as this holds in some of the condensation and slows down the drying whilst still allowing air flow. If any small cracks starts to form i repair them with fresh clay, but they sooner you notice (before the sculpt is fully dry) the easier it is to fix it.

I have an airbrush kit and still haven't used it I'm thinking of selling it unused ..( sells for more money , thn a used one ) ....but I want to try it out. What are the main benefits of airbrush ? I usually paint my sculptures by hand . ...but would love to " need" the air brush ...for something . Can someone help me decide whether to keep it and use it ?
