Painting and glazing tutorial - Cuerda seca technique on greenware

In this video I’m showing you how I paint the outline of my drawing with an oil resist. Then I show you how I glaze it using Mayco Stroke and Coat glazes.

Beautiful work. What kind of kiln should we get to make cuerda seca tiles... maybe 100 or 200 tiles?

Hi Catherine, thank you! I love Skutt kilns or Paragon. They are what I have and they are work horses!👍🏻 There are places that you can take your tiles to be fired, like a pottery supplier near you.

Hi, great video thank you for posting. I've tried the technique, but I'm having trouble with the glaze creeping back away from the lines during firing. I'm using Stroke and Coat glaze and it creeps part of the time. Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Are you firing to gone 5-6 or low fire? I also suggest you make tiles with different clay bodies to test. It could also be too much oil to oxide ratio. How are you applying the oil? There are so many variables. The best thing is to test. I’ve found that after you paint the line work, it’s best to let it dry for a few minutes before applying the glaze.

Hello can you please share recipe for oil resist with underglaze .

I don’t have one. I’ve done a test where I just mixed black underglaze with liquid wax resist, but the result lines weren’t too dark. They sell black wax resist already mixed online. Also I will have another video coming soon of Cuerda Seca using a pencil as a resist, so stay tuned!💞🫶🏻

Can we paint with cuerda seca paints, glazes, techniques on regular pre-fired white glazed tiles? Then woud we need to fire again, and with what kiln and temperature? Help is much appreciated!

No you can’t paint Cuerda seca on vitrified tiles, it won’t work. You need to buy bisqued tiles or make your own. In this video I bought low fire tiles from my local pottery supplier. I also tried black resist with botz glaze but they come out disaster . all glaze mix up. Are using only stroc and coats right ?

Yes I use Mayco Stroke and Coat. The glazes have to be very stable so they don’t move during the glaze firing.👍🏻

I suggest Mayco Stroke and Coat. They are the most versatile glazes on the market. They can be fired from cone 06 all the way to cone 10. I fire to cone 5 or 5.5.

In this video I’m using Mayco Stroke and Coat glazes. Not underglazes. But in other videos where I use underglazes to paint, I use Duncan, Amaco and Spectrum underglazes.

This is the first video of yours I watched - very informative so sorry about the cracked pot 😢. What line brush are you using - I have not found one that works well so I always use the line applicators - I would like to use a brush - squeezing can hurt my hand. Thank you

I’m glad you liked it. The brush I was using is Daco fine detail brush 3/0. I will put the link on my description. Btw, I just took the piece out of the kiln and the single firing works like a charm! I will try to change the cover photo to the finished piece. It’s a shame that it’s cracked.😢

Yay for the successful firing🎉 but it's a hard thing when so much time and energy is put into a piece that ends up with a crack - looking forward to seeing it

@@321ReadysSetG0 I posted a short video showing the finished cup. The crack opened even more during the firing. But it’s ok, I’m making a new batch soon!

Hi Ana; thanks for sharing your technique and recipes. Can you please tell me what cone you fire to? In my experiments with cuerda seca, many wax recipes burn out or leave uneven lines at higher cones. Are you firing low or midrange?

I fire to cone 5.5 temperature 2174 Fahrenheit. I use the oil mixture and I haven’t seen any unevenness with the lines. Maybe the wax resist will do that. I like the oil, it goes on very smoothly.
