Seeing how cloth dyeing techniques in WWII were complete garbage and the uniforms varied wildly in shade I prefer this approach as well.. just go for a broadly accurate colour and apply it well =)

Great video and thank you for sharing it. Just picked up a box of Bolt Action British Infantry and Commandos and a couple of tanks and this totally fires me up to get them on the table. You make the detail work (which I love) look easy.

The thing about this set is there aren't any prone figures so it's difficult to build a figure with the piat in the firing position. Same with the 2" mortar i think. There's nothing wrong with the paint scheme and i like your tutorial. The figures have come out excellent.

A few months ago there was a sale going on at the same time I remembered an old rumour that my maternal grandfather (who I never met) was a Royal Marine during the war. I went a little crazy and bought a couple of boxes of these guys with a command/support group supplement set. Then I sat looking at them ever since wondering which would be the very best paints and methods to use. (Yes I could procrastinate for England) Thanks for the tip Herbert, I'll just throw that shit to the wall and see what sticks! It worked very well for you, that's a good job you did 👍☺

They look find to me. Just hope the British get an updated basic infantry box soon. Maybe with beret heads included. These older sculpts show their age compared to the German SS or American GI's

In most combat situations during WW2 and after, the RM commando cap badges would of been painted black. This eliminates shine during the night
@kurt98375 жыл бұрын
Nah they're spot on uniform wise. Only thing that bugged me was that you didn't paint under the barrel of the Tommy gun brown. Apart from that they're sharp!
@Slaanesh10006 жыл бұрын
Hubert shouldn't be so defensive about his colour choices. Just once in the introduction would suffice to indicate that the colouring is looks like rather than what was though I think the back packs should retain the same colour for their strapping as it is usually all the same material. For painting flesh, a dark tone to begin with, spot with red on cheeks and the like, (the blood comes up when you are active), and then thin layers of a lighter flesh over the top, this kills that yellow look. Shame he doesn't like painting figures though. I cut my teeth on Airfix Napoleonics and found I could still get a pattern on Black Watch Kilts. So 15 mm is not as bad as he supposes.
@HerbertErpaderp6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't consider myself defensive about colour choices. My statements are mostly to remind people I don't especially care if they they think I'm using the wrong colours. The amount of people who think they know the one and only exact shade to use is surprising. The filter usually catches the most aggressive ones though, so only I get to chuckle about those. but I also like to try to at least say something about my reasoning for colour choices. It might not be necessary, but I like to do it. It's something I like to know when I see others paint. Everyone has their preferences for what they like to paint. Figures just aren't mine usually.

Great job, looks fine to me. To be honest any shade of paint would be correct, Units in the field would trade in their uniforms in for clean ones if they were lucky every 3-4 weeks and get a shower.
@HerbertErpaderp8 жыл бұрын
I do agree. though... Maybe not ANY shade... Hot pink might be a little uncommon. I think I could have added a bit more variation to the colour of their uniforms to be honest. They'd look like they'd been out fighting longer that way. Oh well. Next time. Imagine how good a shower would feel after even 3 weeks.

Hey I love the final matte look of your figures. What is the name(s) of the products you used after the humbrol transfer applicator? You dipped them in what and matte varnished with what?
@HerbertErpaderp7 жыл бұрын
I didn't dip them in anything. After the decals I used gloss varnish to seal them. I think at that time I was using the vallejo gloss. The matte varnish is AK Interactive Ultra Matte. It's the most matte matte varnish I've found so far.

Very good painting video. One thing though: 'P.I.A.T.' is an acronym from Projector Infantry Anti Tank, and it's pronounced 'pee-at', not 'pee-art', just check any video of WW2 veterans who used one.

Do you have to thin all paint before use and do you just use water to thin it?
@HerbertErpaderp8 жыл бұрын
+Aleksei Krasnov Alesnarovich Some paints like Vallejo Model Air don't really need thinning. But model colour does for most applications. I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner, but water works well enough.
@corkscrew45858 жыл бұрын
+Herbert Erpaderp How would I thin primer? How much water/ thinner should I use?
@HerbertErpaderp8 жыл бұрын
+Aleksei Krasnov Alesnarovich I don't thin primer. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to do that or not, but I've never felt a need for it anyway. The primers I've used all went through my airbrush with no issues.

Could you do a video explaining the static grass applicator eventually because I kinda want to get one. Get video, good to some other ww2 models besides FoW
@HerbertErpaderp9 жыл бұрын
+Cooper Hamlin I was actually thinking about that while I was editing this. I decided against explaining the applicator in depth because the video was already going to be really long. It's a good idea though. I'll put something together!

Alright. Sorry for all the questions I'm asking, but I'm new to painting miniatures. Do you really need an airbrush? They are quite expensive over here so just asking if it's really needed. Can I maybe just use a brush and apply some primer like that?
