When demonstrating the 'explosion' problem it appeared as though the bottles were completely upside-down. Just a tip this usually happens because the ball is in the cap (due to gravity). Holding the bottle at a 45 degree angle should avoid this problem in most cases.

It's explain in the official speed paint video Army painter did years ago. Do not use it fully upside-down since the ball can to that.

While accurate, she's obviously used these kinds of bottles before and probably knows the difference between ball activated explosions and a clog. It is good to share that the balls will also cause this issue, but I don't think that was the only factor at play.

I thinks it’s the ball bearing inside. If you turn the bottle completely over…the bearing covers the hole some of the time. If you tilt it on the side the ball won’t clog the nozzle

I'm with you on the reactivation issue. If I don't want to use a reactivation for blending, I just use Vallejo. With "fixing" this, I think AP removed a feature, not a bug. What bothers me most is the clogging. I know already that I will at some point ruin my clothes or hardware with a load of spilled paint. :(

I know you said it isn't a review because of your involvement with Army Painter, but I think your criticisms made it very clear that you're not just holding back for the sake of that relationship. Your problem isnt that they are getting clogged, the steel ball bearing when you hold the bottle vertically is getting stuck in the nozzle and when you apply pressure the top cap blows off. Try holding it at a 45, if you feel resistance, dont keep applying pressure.

The clogging thing is fairly common with narrow-tip bottles. I often encounter it with Reaper's paints, for example (though I have no reference as to whether it's a bigger issue for speed paints than others). Reaper even sells a "pokey tool" with is basically a blunt-ish needle with a big decorative head (their main one uses a skull of course, but they occasionally do variants).

I've had that bottle explosion thing happen to me a couple of times with the 1.0 speedpaints. I don't paint very often so I think the speedpaints just dry in the nozzle relatively quickly. Maybe the 2.0 is a little more prone to the problem but the problem was there with 1.0.

Very cool! I have mixed feelings on the reactivation going away. I do prefer my paints not to reactivate as a general rule as it can lead to unpredictable behavior. But having said that, I do find myself using the reactivation properties on Speedpaint 1.0 all the time. I just used it last night when painting a Frosthaven mini. The mini is supposed to have glowing icy fists. So I zenithal white over a dark blue base coat. Then I hit the fists with Magic blue being quite careless in the application. Then after a little bit of dry time I used a damp brush to remove the Magic Blue off the raised parts of the ice fists. The final effect is pretty great and would've taken more steps to achieve with Contrast or (presumably) speedpaint 2.0 or a normal set of paints. While I do like oils and have used them, they are messier and require more cleanup than Acrylics so I really don't want to have to get them out for something like this mini. In the end it wouldn't have saved me any time like the Speedpaint 1.0 did.

None of my colors inside the 2.0 mega set was clogged. Putting the bottle 90 degree upside is a bad idea with steel balls inside a dropper bottle. But it is not a fault of the Army Painter range. It happens with Vallejo and every other dropper bottle too. It is more a user error than a desing error. The other pros and cons are valid in my opinion. Especially if you are used to blending the color together you have to do it right away as long as they are still wet (wet blending) like with normal acrylic paints. So if you know it you can work with it.

I've been working through the set alongside my old speed-paints. The new colours are nice as are the metallics, but overall I prefer the old formula so far. I miss being able to wipe away an accidental bit of paint with a wet brush. It also seems to clog the brush up quicker and water doesn't clear it. I've had to use my brush soap.

Regarding the starter brush, I am a relatively simple painter (I mostly just care for table top ready) and have vision problems. The brush I am currently using is a one of the smallest ones I found at a game store because I'm not good enough to get into small details with a larger brush. I almost never use the brush which came with my Speedpaint 1.0 set; the smaller brush would be much more helpful for me.

these paints are great. I have the full range at home and almost use them exclusively. blending is far easier with a soft dry brush afterwards . gives the same effect as a wet blend. make sure to use a dampening pad for your dry brush if you do this because it will make your paint chalky otherwise.

haven't had a chance to try the new stuff obviously, but what you said is some of my fears incarnate. I didn't mind the reactivation within bounds. I know that at the minimum some amount of heresy, but i found it much easier to paint and not waste paint. you just worked around it. I'm not a master blender by any means. I just like being able to work and fix since I'm such a hack, and now i fear my paint production is going to slow down again. Clogged tips slows me down, fast drying paint slows me down. Speedpaint 1.0 really helped me to be more productive, i don't master paint one mini at a time. It actually made me MORE productive since i got out more models to line up and paint 1 color at once. Honestly sounds to me like I'm going to need to find all the 1.0 paints i can and hold on to them.

But I know I will be able to reactivate the paint and blend it later with additional color to create a smooth transition (I can even overspread the paint intentionally to prepare for some sort of "color bounce"/"atmospheric light"). I was hoping that this feature would be still present to some degree in version 2.0. :( Really sad to see it gone.

It would be great if they could create a line of slow dryers. I fully agree that a line called "Speed Paints" shouldn't reactivate and should dry quickly, but an "Elite" or "Master" line? Advertising them as an oil style paint would give them a nice sub set of colors within the range, they'd just need a disclaimer that they require sealing to avoid reactivating them

Three items of note. One, giving a disclaimer for scent-sensitive people is really nice. I've spent enough time in art studios and industrial environments that the smell of bleach is indistinguishable from fresh air at this point, but it definitely is something more reviewers should discuss more for those people who struggle. Second, those minis are really interesting. I have never heard of Deuslair before, and now am very stoked to check out the models. I love stuff that is a mix of traditional fantasy and sci-fi, which is why 40k is such a big staple on my tabletop. And third, I really wasn't sold on Speed Paints after I saw Pete the Wargamer's recent Daemon Primarch Leman Russ kitbash which he demonstrated the line with. I usually love his style, but his Leman Russ was the first Dornian Heresy model he has ever made that I didn't like at all. I fully assumed it was an issue with the paints and was ready to write off the line, but it seems more likely now that Speed Paints just don't work with his more unique style. As your style is far more like my own personal painting technique, I am much more confident about using the range myself, because these two turned out beautifully.

I think the original speedpaint was better, I really liked the reactivation feature, you could do an easy highlight just by using a damp cotton bud to wipe off the highest points, it was also really easy yo lighten thd whole effect or even mix on thd model with a darker colour in areas, it reminded me of working with oil washes.

What color green is that? I'm thinking of getting striking scorpions green for my necrons but will stick to army painter if their neon green color is just as good

Well, clogging bottles and shorter dryig time goes in pair. New resin seems to be a culprit. Awesome job on the minis btw. Will You build a stock of speed paints 1.0 now? ;)

I already have enough 1.0 speedpaints to last me a lifetime! Not to mention I have all the resin and pigments to mix my own whenever I want :)

I mean, it makes sense that "speed" paint should dry fast and not reactivate, but I'm sad to see the blending capabilities go. Maybe they could rebrand the original formula as some other line? In the meantime, I guess I'd better get more 1.0 medium because I have an idea that banks on the blending capabilities. :x

You can please some people some of the time but not all of the people ALL of the time. I wonder if the speedpaint medium will help with the blending.

damn, thats incredibly sad. I just got finished painting up a whole Nighthaunt army using the amazing wet blending capabilities of speedpaints+contrasts, and losing that is a real bummer. I wonder if having the two colors "live" and working very quickly over an area could achieve similar results, as I did mostly 'wet brush' blending when I did my ghouls - starting with the weaker tone, and dipping the brush into the stronger tone to start the blend on the brush as I added it to the model. Maybe a modification of workflow can achieve similar things with these paints, as I have using that wet-brush method been able to achieve pretty decent blends using just citadel contrasts.

Huh bottles getting clogged was something i thought was normal with acrylic paint. Sometimes they just pop with the right pressure.

It is, the mixing balls exasperate it a bit. Which is why we recommend in our Best Practice video, to use a pins or cocktail stick to clear the nozzle if it feels stuck before squeezing too hard.

I think they should simply release the old SP-medium as its own thing. Call it Blending Medium or something. Win win, no?
