Would this still work with black primer. I know you used two, but could I stick with just black/grey/white? This will be my first time painting miniatures

Absolutely! I would advise against using contrast paints on black primer as they wont react too well with them. You'll need a few extra coats of lighter paints with a black primer. But you can always prime it black, dry brush on some white/lighter colours and go from there. Check out the 'slap chop' method on KZbin, that's basically what that is!
