I've been using brown ink for my gold and I've loved it. Thanks for touching on the subject.

Great tutorial! Would like to add, that Vallejo inks are on the matt side compared to other lines (especially the artist ones from Liquitex and Daler Rowney for example), so those would preserve the sheen of the metallics more.

I would love to see a video on you're miniatures collection, I'm sure it's vast! Lots of 28mm and 15mm and scale models. Its a lot to ask but if you're looking for some new content we would enjoy it!

Using inks changed my workflow when painting. So useful in so many ways which you demonstrated here. It's my skin tone secret.

I've watched this video around 10 times and it still looks like magic up me. I need to learn how to control the ink and water mix better like you're clearly doing.

Make sure to dab your brush on paper towel to remove excess like he does each time he touches the palette with brush

I love painting with inks. White ink seems to spray way better than white paint (it covers better and doesn't spatter as much overspray).

Interesting, I must play with some inks as I like the effects on armour... I have some War of the Roses miniatures who could benefit from this approach

I like using Vallejo White Aluminum as a basecoat for all metals, be it steel, bronze or copper. Then I use inks to get the colors I want. And for highlights I usually mix ink with white alluminum.

this was truly awesome video. I have tried regular paints with metallic and agree with your assessment. Was not pleased with the overall outcome. I just recently bought some inks and will have to try this on my current model I'm working on. Keep up the great videos!

Thanks for this. Is there a base coat (that dark grey) applied first (for tooth)? Or is that dark grey the way the figure came when purchased? Thanks.

As a warning to fellow viewers - ONLY use ACRYLIC inks. Alcohol based inks easily "reactivate", and bleed through anything you paint on top, including laquer, making cleanup after mistakes or sloppy splashes literally impossible.

Your opinion on contrasts over metallics? You can get beautiful dark bronze if you apply grey contrast over Balthasar Gold. And any contrast over metallic/silver primer does wonders for colorful armour.

I've got old Citadel inks and some Scale 75 inks that I rarely use. I'll have to be a bit more adventurous with their application. There has to be more to inks than just coffee staining.

There is no wrong way to paint as long as the end result is good. That said: I have never liked NMM - it can look great from one angle, but change the angle you look at the model and... it sucks. So thanks but no thanks.

Awesome video!! Thanks a lot, I was looking for adding ink to metallics without losing the gleam. Have you tried with Vallejo Metal Color range? It’s water based but I found using it with liquitex inks it’s extremely runny and difficult to control, although the color mix is really awesome specially with an airbrush. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

A bit of a side question. This is a very shiny figure... Do you varnish at the end? If so, what type? If not, what to do as 'protection'? Btw, lovely figure. I've never consider using ink to shade armor like that. I'll have to experiment :-)

@@XYZdude00 but that would destroy the shine. The question is really only about models that is meant to be shiny. I've also tried hand brushes gloss varnish on applicable part, but that leaves something to be desired compared to the original shine.
@XYZdude00

@@kal6351 For me that was never an issue. I like the matte sheen as rarely anything is that glossy in real life.

I like to apply a mixture of Vallejo Gloss and Satin varnishes with a brush. Usually, I start with a coat of roughly 50-50 Gloss and Satin to the whole model. When that is completely dry, I apply pure Satin to areas that aren't supposed to be shiny, like skin and clothes. If the shiny areas look either too shiny or not shiny enough, I give them another coat of Gloss/Satin mix, but with a different mixing ratio to get the desired effect. Finally, I some times add a coat of Satin and Matt mix (or even pure Matt) to areas I want to look extra matt, typically sand, rocks or weathered areas. However, it might be a good idea to practice this technique on some of your less important models or just on a less visible area on a model :)
