Awesome video! What are the little metal dishes you use for diluting/mixing paints, trying to avoid using plastic shot glasses because it makes a lot of waste. I'd like to get some but I've used every bit of search-fu I can muster but I'm coming up with nothing. What are they actually called?

Thanks a million!!! They are called paint trays/wells and come from companies like Tamiya, MrHobby, UStar, (now also AK Interactive has its own ak-interactive.com/product/modeling-paint-wells/ ). You can find them in any model shop or with better prices on eBay (sadly I still don't have a stable and safe link to share); my stash is a souvenir from Korea 😅

Hey Marco, tried using Oil for first time and ran into a few issues, hope you can help: 1) Using the same brand as you, I noticed some separation when squeezing paint onto pot (some transparent liquid) - Normal? Old paint? Unfortunately this package dont allow any shaking/mixing. 2) I did not clear with q-tips because I was doing a test model and wanted to see how it would look like raw - Notice the diluted oil paint stains the flats surfaces in a very streaky-dusty way, it looks very dirty - Normal? Didnt I dilute enough? 3) It's been 2 days and it is not dry yet, it is sticky now, but even after 24hrs paint would come off on touch - In the vid you indicate drying takes minutes, what is wrong here? I am using hobby white spirits... Thanks!!
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'll answer point by point 😊 1) Yep, it's normal for new tubes; that's the oily part of the paint! You don't want too much of that in your mix (that increases a lot the drying time and gives a glossy finish), so better discard the fist squeeze or put it on a piece of thick cardboard to drain the excess of oil. 2) That's quite normal in a wash and that streaky dusty finish it's exactly what we need for the weathering effect! I use oil paints to represent grime and dirt because they are made by the same "ingredients" (oil and pigments that are coloured powders). If you want a clean result you need to clean the surface with a q tip or a brush and leave the paint only inside details and crevices. An oil wash doesn't work like contrast paints on flat surfaces. 4) This isn't normal 😅 the problem here is definitely the excess of oil of the first question. Also probably you used a layer of oils a bit too thick. The drying time for a wash is between minutes and a couple of hours depending on the dilution and the quantity applied on the surface. Keep me updated in your experiments 😉😉😉

Don't worry, it's a pleasure 😊. This is my top 3 Harder and Steenbeck - Evolution Harder and Steenbeck - Infinity CR Plus Iwata HP-BH (used in the videos) I started airbrushing with a super cheap brandless airbrush so after that everything else is quite easy to use lol! 😆 The Evolution was my first proper tool and I still use it for the heavy duty work! In 5 years I had to change nozzle and needle only one time. Relatively cheap, super easy to clean and handle I think it's still one of the best starting point for price and general quality! The Infinity is not my favourite but it's a good tool for extreme precision tasks thanks to its 0.15 mm needle. It's not user friendly as the Evolution but if you need extreme precision and a body really simple to clean and re assemble it is the way to go. The Iwata is my sacred, perfect, unstoppable beast! It's really a professional tool, able to resist to every kind of stress and be always perfect; you need a trained finger to be able to use its full potential, but you'll never regret the the purchase!

Hi! Inks are strong paints so you have to avoid leaving them for hours in the airbrush. I run into the airbrush few drops of cleaner every time I change colours to avoid tough residues. For old solid paint a good solvent is isopropyl alcohol and methylated spirit is even better 😉

@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks a million!!! 😊 Your primer is fine! This can happen for a combination of factors: -when you spray inks you are applying a super thin layer of material compared to spraying other acrylic formulations so it's easier to affect this layer with less physical stress, plus -inks in general take a bit more time to dry so you need to wait a bit more before applying an "aggressive" technique (because it brings on the model a lot of water, medium and chemicals) like a wash. You can solve everything with a light coat of varnish before the wash (but if give to the inks half an hour to be fully dry in the micro level you should already be fine 😉)

First off, you weren't kidding about being gentle lol i learned the light touch quickly, but rubbed off some paint in my first five strokes of the dry swab. Second, the result was way better than I expected for a first try! The grit was far more credible than any former technique I've used. I think I have a grasp of the wash consistency, but will improve. I finished the current batch and next up I plan on going full force on the oils. I'll send you pics of my usual, the first attempts, and the next batch like I promised hah

So interesting! Thank you Marco! So effectively - as demonstrated on your metallics - the skin could be done with the same colours but a brush, correct? I only have rattlecans and brushes :)
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! Sure, everything in the video could be done with a brush (and to be honest for people not super used to airbrushing even faster using wet blending to do the base layer!!!)
@docremington15895 жыл бұрын
MarcoFrisoniNJM thank you! I guess the inks are predestined to create smooth transitions due to their transparency. Correct?
@docremington15895 жыл бұрын
What I mean: do they need to be wet blended?
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
@@docremington1589 Exactly! You can create new tones just layering them thanks to the transparency (if you layer a blue on top of a died yellow you'll still obtain a green just by transparency!) and since they are so liquid it's also easy to wetblend
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
@@docremington1589 no no, it's just an extra option, you can use them like classic acrylics!

Hey Marco, could you do a grimdark, blanchitizu painitn tutorial for the new Untamed Beasts Warband in WarCry please? I think you could nail it, it would look like the awesome Slaine artwork in Book of Invasions!

Ciao. How close are you actually to the face when applying yellow and green? And what is your psi/bar? What is the needles size? I am asking because I am struggling very often with colors consistency , when it comes to detail works with an AB.

Hi! Here I'm working at 2.5 Bar/35-36 PSI with a 0.2 nozzle, I would say at 5cm of distance 😉

How I painted my first generation tyranids. The genestealers came out so slick and sick. Oils, inks, and thin washes over saturated base tones.
@philgee4863 жыл бұрын
Came back to this old one because the title stressed oils and inks, two areas I'm really concentrating on, and what did I find to wrack my very soul with need and compulsions? That bicarbonate/superglue texture might look better on 32mm minis than sand but it also looks awesome on my 1/100th/15mm tanks! Recently finished my beloved late war german armour (I can hate the inhumanity of the regime and still adore the gorgeous engineering they were using) They were painted as new and just off the production line, camouflage paint schemes that are so beautiful, to be thrown into the battle to stop the allies in France. Because I can't be bothered with the air attacks and supply shortages that actually stopped these engineerig marvels, ranged against them instead are all sorts of AT assets but always based around forces of my beloved ageing sherman formations, unimaginative green on green with flat green accents, dull, boring, presentations of poorly conceived and insanely flammable warshite. (I hated the idea of them so much till I bit the bullet and started painting them. Then they needed grime and careful panel lining/washing to have any shape at all, they needed sandbags, and boxes, and kitbags and tarps, blankets, buckets, mud, rents, dents and tents. I grew to love each different individual, well lived in tank, they're so beautiful to me now AND RUST! But now after a quick try on two of the roughest survivors I'd so far made I'm quickly repainting over actual scale appropriate surface texture!!! They looked good with just witht he bent and dented fenders and painted rust, but now! Dear Lord! where will I find the self control to stop??? If I can't reign this in they're going to look like a 75 year anniversary zombie tank revival of the ones that sunk trying to swim themselves to the Normandy beaches.... can I even sculpt a 1/100th angry eel? Now I'm going to need to treat this mad compulsion to rust with an actual nano-zombie or extra-dimensional weirdness reanimated scifi army. One that's heavy on waking the shattered armour wrecks and long abandoned wargraves of some far flung and forgotten desolate rock world orbiting a black hole that doesn't even have a name, a battle rendered strategically unnecessary before it was even fought As a fine imagination once coined them "The Tactics of Mistake", and best forgotten Now something unimaginably old, unbelievably malefic, unquestionably mad and so painfully starving for lifeforce peers through the prism of that black hole from a dead, cold, empty universe, drained to nothingness. It sees this young, vibrant, diverse and burgeoning universe, a realm so packed with life where wars are waged just for the territory needed to live and grow, it sees this and it hungers like nothing this realm has ever known.... And with the sheer force of this hunger spills over the wrecks, ruins and remains of this unremembered pitiable host and they begin to rise, to rise and to turn toward that seeming void in the sky from whence pours forth the pure WILL to conquer and consume My 30year abandoned space marine chapter was The Wrath of Angels I think this counterpoint will be simply The Wrath of Hunger

I'd even play 40k to get to eat the progeny of one of these mewling new baby gods, sniveling newborns that imagine themselves to be ancient and born of true chaos, dressing themselves up in pomp and majesty ridiculous Let them know the dark Let them hear the music of true power Let their hearts learn that dread that only the hunted know, that truly all that power they so proudly embodied, it just makes the meat the sweeter...

Love the vid! Wanted to ask you a question, what is the difference between oil paint washes and AK interactive streaking grime enamel wash paint? Thank you.
@MarcoFrisoniNJM5 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! 😊😊😊 Oils and enamels can have a really similar behaviour (and I use enamels for certain effects combined with all the other techniques but this a topic for another video 😉) but with some key differences: -the drying time of enamels is much faster than with oils and this can be and advantage or disadvantage depending on the need and situation (Ak Streaking grime is a very diluted enamel that usually come in little pots and a quite thick consistency). - enamels tend to be naturally more matt (partially thanks to fast drying time) -enamels are more aggressive in staining an acrylic surface without a protective layer on top

Hello mate, always enjoy your videos, keep up the great work! if you wished to remove the glossy finish could you varnish the end product? if so matte or satin and what would be the difference? would make for a great video! cheers
@MarcoFrisoniNJM4 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you mean the satin finish of oils it disappears after few days. If you want to change the finish of inks it's better to add the varnish inside the ink while painting. Depending on the brand of varnish there's a lot of different between matt and satin, but choosing one or another is more a matter of personal taste
