Your grouping of peach trees are planted in the “Grow a little fruit tree” method, which is a book by Ann Ralph. I highly recommend reading it. Dave Wilson Nursery also has a lot of videos on youtube about how to prune fruit trees to keep them on the smaller side (so you don’t need a ladder to pick the fruit). For the grouping, you would essentially prune it as if it were one tree, by keeping the center open and branches growing outwards.

Have you thought of putting a door in the front of your kitchen to the bunny palace (former apartment) area? It would make it so much more accessible. And I know your girls would be really disappointed, but this former apartment area would make an amazing master bedroom suite. That would solve your small master bedroom issue. It would also be nice to have the master bedroom on the other side of the house.

The day after our professional landscaper planted our backyard, watering front and back drained our water tank. This was in Madera County. We quickly learned we would need another well to support all our plants. We also needed a reverse osmosis system for water quality. We loved living in the country but the wells needed a lot of upkeep. Be sure to leave easy access for large vehicles to be able to access your well. I’m 72 and your planters inspired me to start a container garden on my patio. We live in Clovis, Ca., also zone 9b. Congratulations on your new home and gardens! Hi Janey! I have a suggestion..your arborist probably has to pay some place to dump all those chips he accumulates.. ask him if he would occasionally drop some off at your house; he could save $, and so could you! You will find that you need a great many! Laying down chips regularly will improve the soil, inhibit weeds, etc....you know all the benefits! Just a suggestion that you both benefit from. Great video! Ask him to drop chips from healthy trees and brush, of course.

You scored today in getting the extra work done and finding the fruit and nut chart. Dave Wilson Nursery is one of the best fruit tree growers in the SJV. It's very common to have 4 fruit trees planted like that, in one hole, that have similar growth habits. It allows you to have a variety of fruit in a smaller space such as a backyard; as is the "fruit salad" trees where 4 different varieties are grafted on one root stock. Your scenario usually works better. That's why you "couldn't find those other fruit trees", they were included in one hole. I hope you have a good well with decent GPM, that's something you should consider when designing the landscape. You don't want to turn on the water and walk away and forget. Who will have to dig the new gas line from the new location to house, you or the propane company? Please be mindful of where the bunnies go, there's critters out there that would like to eat them. Small changes have already made a big difference!

They have two spaces, one for yard waste, one for wood waste. NO grass clipping are allowed ...because of chemicals that might have been used on them. After the item have composted or been chipped, they have free, mulch or compost.. Load your own. It is available to use 7days a week , from dawn to dust, no night time access. Love it. If you have big weedy patches around your landscape, to tamp down and keep it from getting 'out of hand', you can go with the 'no till method' of laying down cardboard (which you'll probably have on hand from the move) and then placing a thick layer of mulch on top. It will sit and break down into compost until you're ready to deal with that part of the yard - Because it sounds like you will be working on section by section. All the tree mulch will go to good use without having to burn it

Hügelkultur!!! If you didn’t learn about this in your master garden classes, google Hugelkultur beds. You can use them for vegetable beds or flower beds. We have used them in very larger planter containers, raised beds, and in burms. Also, ask your arborist to bring you wood chips when they are in your area! They need to dump them somewhere! Your property is beginning to look like a blank canvas. But remember the first place to begin is with the soil! Wood chips, compost, and hugelkultur returns living organisms back to the soil! And if you do burn any wood, be sure to use your ashes in your soil. #soilhealth!

From another rural California gardener. We do burning here in Monterey county, but we need to get a burn permit and follow certain rules like checking before we burn if it is a burn day, which is weather dependent. Also burn season is usually only January to May, also depending on how much moisture we get. You're also limited to the size of a pile you can burn, but you can add more as your pile burns down. When burn season is over, we make small piles of the garden debris and ny husband chops them up by running over them with the mower attached to our tractor. We also feed a lot of the trimmings to the 2 steer we keep in our pasture. But we have 17 acres and a lot of room to make piles. With your smaller property with most of it being garden area, a chipper might be the best way to go. And you might want to check with your goat neighbor if they would mind if you fed some of your trimmings to his goats, checking to make sure what you give them isn't poisonous.

Janey, your new place is going to be a showstopper inside and out! What a fantastic experience you had with the tree company! I was just as excited as you to see all that they did. That was very smart of you to ask for the chips. They like it too because it saves them from having to haul it to the dump. I had no idea they would be also be willing to remove the roses and the buddleia, and they even offered to remove the retaining wall?! Wow! You struck gold with them. In my rural county in Oregon, woody debris can be taken to the county dump, where it is turned into organic compost, or to a nearby landscape supply company, which also uses it to make organic compost. But you do need to haul it! You might need a pickup truck now that you're in the country!

The yard is coming along, it’s definitely baby steps. It’s so nice to get everything organized first before beginning the design. I would suggest asking a Irrigation co. To come out and check all the lines and have them move that station in the front of your house to a more secluded area , so weird they put all that piping and landing in the front against the house🤷🏻♀️ you may want to update the timer organization box as well, the newer ones are easy and connected to your phone so you can control any zone from your phone ..the co. Should also walk around and point out all the zones and what needs changing in the sprays and drip part.

We have so much debris from maintaining our acre yard that we invested in a trailer about 15 years ago. We park it in the back and take it to a local Fresno County green waste facility when it’s full. We use big tarps to collect and drag to the trailer. For a maintenance plan, my husband took aerial shots with his drone and I printed out a photo, outlined 7 zones, gave them colors and assigned days to each color. That way, e.g., I know my focus on Monday is the pink zone even if the other zones also need attention. I try to spend at least 30 minutes everyday in the assigned zone. Otherwise, I feel totally overwhelmed. I did something similar with our irrigation zones. We tried to find someone to hire for maintenance, but they all want to just mow and blow which is not what we need. We only hire for specific projects. I’m so excited to see what you’re going to do! We burn our brush-it’s not as scary as you think. Thankfully, when we moved in, our neighbor gave us some great tips. In our area of SoCal, you have to call the county to get permission to burn when you live outside city limits. They ask what you’re burning (brush) and how big your piles are (4-5’ x 4-5’). If you don’t call to get permission, you can be fined (if caught). Just keep your piles small and away from the house, and make sure you have water very nearby. Good luck!

I wish my husband and I had hired a painter for our house before we moved in. I think that's what my husband was planning for us to do. But I was ambitious and thought that we could tackle it together and save some money.WRONG! We have been in this house for two-and-a-half years and it is still not completely painted. We have 5 rooms that are mostly painted. 2 of those 5 rooms are the kids rooms. And the rest of the house has not been touched . Those 2 are the only rooms that are completely painted. Our hallway has a bunch of doorways and only 2 of them are painted white. LOL. I seriously regret that decision. Because now it's going to be more difficult to paint because we have furnished most of the house.🤦 but anyway your place looks great! I'm so happy for you guys! Finding that Dave Wilson fruit tree poster is a good clue to your orchard area. Dave Wilson teaches a high density planting technique which you have right in your front yard with those four trees planted so close together. You’ll want to check into that when your life settles down. There are videos about it on Urban Farmstead. Kyle is in Sacramento and shows all about it! The basic idea is to keep trees short so you don’t have to harvest on tall ladders. Planting close together keeps them short, along with specific pruning techniques. I’m in Utah but my daughter is close to you so I’ve been enjoying getting gardening zone ideas from you to share with her! Good luck with your move and all the fun gardening plans! I’ll be eagerly watching the transformation.

Your arborist did such a great job. His information about all your trees as well as the neighbors trees is so important in this planning phase. The painting in your office really was the right choice. Happy moving!

I ain’t gonna lie… it was hard watching those palm trees go down. After leaving California I don’t get to see them anymore.

Love how bright your office looks. Yay getting things cleared out and getting mulch. Hopefully you know, but bunnnies are notorious for chewing cords, so putting anything that is plugged in the bunny bungalow inside cable.protectors is advised. I think a door from the dinning into the bungalow would be good too, but you all will see what works.

So excited for you! When it comes to building your berms/hills, don't be afraid to use sod or dirt you may be moving. We took a flat suburban yard and turned the sod over and made an intentional hill, with a dry creek bed. We covered the hill with cardboard and fresh topsoil. We've had great success with it. I'd be happy to send you pics if you'd like. Have fun and enjoy the process.

I am so enjoying this journey into your new home and all of the land that you are managing and designing. The White Dove looks fabulous in the house. My best guess is you will paint the outside grey. Your pace and sense of order are impressive. I will be tuning in daily as I'm so excited for you and looking forward to seeing everything!!! You are simply outstanding at your craft.
