Helping my dad make some scenery for his model trains. We’ve been having fun experimenting and playing around, but this is exactly the kind of thing we needed

Looks great Gregg I always look forward to seeing your videos. It's amazing how the layout comes together with the scenery I find myself doing a area of scenery then running a few trains through it then I think why did I wait so long to do the landscaping and scenery anyway take care my friend

Very good work Greg! I appreciated your comments. One does have to allow for where the "sun" should be in our scenes. The other variables include what kind of rock you are modeling, the locale and your layout lighting, plus your "eye" for colors. What looks fine to me might not look right to you. So there is no best way to do the scenery - one plunges in and makes the best effort and learns as one goes. You are off to a great start.
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Gary! Not quiet the colours I was after, but as you say there is no right or wrong...to a degree of course. The black wash helped and I now have written down colours and order of use on test rocks so I can now get better matches with past attempts. Thanks for the support and positive words. Cheers Gregg.

Love the French accent, I remember using the Woodlands Scenes method, the problem was it left white spots, it drove me crazy because they would not color under the pigments. Now I am using Hobby Lobby cheap paint for 1.25 a bottle then water them down. Using more tans now. Looks great Gregg, great point, use the lighter colors first, that’s a new one for me. I am thinking you have caught the landscaping bug, you are now an professional. Don’t doubt yourself, again great Job. Terry from Nebraska. Cheers.
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms 5 жыл бұрын
Not my best accent Terry..LOL The spotting method is ok for a single colour with some highlights, but I prefer to be a bit more precise. I am still working out what colours blend with each other the best. I do enjoy scenery a lot more than I thought!! , but far rom a pro sir! Really appreciate the support and comments Terry. Thanks again ! Cheers Gregg.

Hey Gregg, Hope all is going well. I've never tried this but I bet you could spray that first wash and some of the later ones from a spray bottle. Would save time and sanity for larger areas of rockwork. Cheers Mate!
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms 5 жыл бұрын
You could try spraying for large areas I guess? You need to put a bit one with the washes and a spray may be a bit light on? But worth a try mate. Cheers Gregg.

Greg great to see the landscape growing. I would say you would help a lot having a number of reference photos pinned up from the areas you have in mind for your layout it helps you keep focused on the real thing. I am not saying your choice of colours is right or wrong they maybe correct for your area but the photos help a lot. Just heard about a technique putting some play sand into the plaster mix to put some texture into the surfaces I assume you are going to use talus to make the rock face more realistic you can scatter it down the face while painting to help hold it in place.
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Paul! Yes photos.....I have one ...LOL Its hard to get the right ones but I have finally learnt how to screen shot , so when I see some nice rocks in videos I can now capture them and have a reference! The reds have toned down a bit and the black wash helped, and I now write down what colours I used and in what order...down a lot of testing on small pieces and getting nice results which I'll show in the next video. I'm making Talus now and that will be added soon too! Thanks for the tips and you continued support sir. Cheers Gregg.

Remember. Mother Nature is not Black & White. There is no 'wrong' earth tones in my book. You've captured and drew out a nice character within these rocks. The warm hues remind me of the BNSF Southern Transcon rock cuts found through Abo Canyon through New Mexico and along the Seligman Subdivision in Northern Arizona. As always thank you for sharing and entertaining us! God Bless 🍻
