This video and the Stormy Clouds discussions are exactly what led me to your channel in the first place. I just love how your drawing skills flow so naturally into your painting skills. I also love how your plaid shirt matches the colors you're using. I knew you intended that. ;) I think the most keyword you used in this discussion is the phrase "pick out." It's something, I know for me, I need to get better at doing and not trying to "jab out" in large, wet areas where they end up bleeding into a big blob. As another viewer mentioned, you really do make it look easy. And that's why we watch! lol! Thank you for this one, Steve! Well done!

I loved the rocks. I enjoy rocks and have been overwhelmed but I believe I can do it now. Your videos are so relaxing to watch. I am learning from you that I do not need to paint everything. When I get stressed sometimes I will just click on one of your videos and de stress. The music at the beginning makes me happy.

Loving these rock studies! It is rather "Zen" when one kind of lets the rocks form themselves with the help of watercolor's "mind"!

Thank you so much for everything you do. I am still having trouble with distant trees and backgrounds. I just can't get that soft blended look that you and so many others do so easily. I would love to see a video of blending backgrounds. I've been watching all your early videos trying to see what I'm doing wrong. So far I've had little luck in this endeavor. Again thank you for you video,I am retired and have limited resources so couldn't go to classes like some of my friends. Your videos have giving me so much more then I can ever tell you. I lost my mother last year and two months later my sister, I'm not tell you this to make you feel sorry for me but to explain my mind set and how your videos have giving me more then you can know. I now have a mind of water color thanks to you. God bless.

Rock on! Beautiful work as always! I'm just not that great yet at painting watercolor rocks. I've been planning to do some rock studies myself - I can't seem to make rocks look like rocky rocks, with facets; instead, they all have the appearance of smooth river rocks and appear quite flat. Thanks for the demo, it really really helps!

Thanks for the steps, too many times I try rocks and get lost. I did get tickled when you said rocks are so forgiving, now give me a second to say why. I thought about the pet rock craze and how crazy everyone was over them. Okay, back to your video. I definitely need to try this, it will take several tries I am sure. Lucky for me the rocks will forgive me when they don’t turn out like yours.🧐 I will learn from the video and that is what it is all about. 🙃😦✅😁

Thank you so much for the rock study. I'm getting better at rocks, but for something so "forgiving" I sure struggle with them. I often get impatient and it throws off my values when doing rocks.

Thanks for sharing all of your great knowledge! I'd love to see reviews of watercolor magazines. Which ones do you think are worth investing?
@mindofwatercolor5 жыл бұрын
I don't subscribe to any of them. There are only two I'm aware of. Watercolor Artist and The Art of Watercolor. If I buy one its usually the latter which is a UK publication and sort of pricey here in the US. I buy it off the stand at Barnes & Noble. On occasion I'll buy Watercolor Artist if its a good issue, but I'm much less impressed with it.

Love these! I've dabbled with painting some of our southwest (Arizona) rocks and you've shared many helpful tips. (How did you know I wanted a tutorial from you on rocks?!) When you did the little swooshes of blue for the sky in the first example, I went "oooh, that's nice!" The scripture at the end is great too.

Thanks Steve for this ...I learned a lot, but wish you had sketched in the rocks because I'm not an experienced artist and really need the step-by -step version or maybe the Idiot's Guide to Watercolor if there is such a thing. :) Thanks again, I'll be practising rocks today! Seems that D.S. Fresco Grey has a violet tone, I can see why you like it. Seems I could use that one everywhere.

"Rocks are really pretty easy to paint but the hard part is value, shape and form". I think the hardest part to painting rocks in a demonstration is talking while doing it so you don't sound like you are contradicting yourself. Nevertheless, I loved your demo and find it very helpful. Thank you. 😉 All in fun, of course.

I wish I started drawing yrs ago..I'm now 40 and feel foolish considering taking it up...how long did it take to get this good?
@mindofwatercolor5 жыл бұрын
40? Thats nothing. I've known artists that started in their 60's and got quite good. I was a professional illustrator for 40 years so I've been doing it a while but it doesn't take that long. 2-5 years of practice can be very productive if you keep at it.
