This time I think I can succeed with masking fluid. I live where we get super blooms of wildflowers, and I have been so frustrated in my attempts to mask out the flowers.. Thanks, Steve. for painting wildflowers. More, please. I am glad this older video popped up.

Such a valuable lesson about working with Stonehenge Rough watercolor paper. I always wondered about masking over an area that's already been painted, but I never got around to trying it out. I recently found an 8 x 10" piece of Arches Cold Pressed (140lb) with a sketch of a bird I did, plus masking fluid on the eye and parts of the wing and tail. I did this about 4 months ago, then forgot about it and moved on to another project. When I found it I assumed the paper was now toast and the orange tinted masking fluid called Miskit Liquid Frisket from Grumbacher would rip or stain the Arches paper. To my surprise, after sitting for 4 months the masking fluid rubbed off easily with my finger with absolutely no damage to the paper. Arches watercolor paper, both cold and rough pressed, has never let me down when using with the orange tinted masking fluid from Grumbacher. Thank you for another great tutorial, your lessons are always so educational and valuable. Always great to come away having learned something new, Steve!

Love your work! Any other advice to work on this soft paper? What a big difference it made, using a rubber cement pickup vs your hand. This explains past failures of mine, is a big help, and will aid any of us stuck working with soft paper, thanks! It’s been so disappointing when masking tape wrecks a finished painting. I’ve learned to always warm the tape with a hair dryer to soften the glue before slowly pulling at an angle. One of my friends quit painting because her paper kept tearing like that.

Steve this is probably one of the most inspiring of your amazing videos. Here, again I realize that from a possibly uninspiring photo, ( the natural, real life landscape is always more beautiful) if you have that precious' inner eye' as I call it, you can create this wonderful painting. I must try to look beyond the photo. Thank you again for sharing your talent.

Thanks for this one. It gave me an even better idea on how to apply masking fluid over a large area. I’ve tried using a tooth brush to get the scatter I was hoping for and it did not work as well as your dedicating a brush to make the application. It appears I will need to sacrifice a ‘cheap’ brush to the altar of the art process. I too have been having issues with getting the masking fluid off of the paper long after drying and well after the paint was dried. Lately, I have had several different brands of paper peel off along with the masking. I have gone in early on another sheet of the same pad to see if the paper tears, found that it not seem to tear, and then at the end of the work it tore! This even goes for the tape used along the border. I have been using drafting/architectural tape hoping to avoid this issue and it still tears. I am starting to wonder if it is due to a sudden lowering of standards in the making of the paper or could it be I need to let the paint dry longer than 24 hours. It is starting to become a bit frustrating. -OkieSketcher1949

This wildflower scene is so so pretty! I just bought two blocks of Stonehenge (sale at Jerry"s Artarama and I wanted to try it). I am concerned about the masking fluid peeling up the paper now. I want to try this masking technique - so glad I do have a couple of sheets of Arches. I guess I'll use washi tape, for a border, on the Stonehenge - not so sticky - but you said the blue tape is very delicate. Very informative video with techniques and advice.
