How to paint a model tank without using any expensive tools or products.
Model: Tamiya's rebox of Asuka's 1/35 scale Sherman VC Firefly.
The Sherman VC Firefly was a M4A4 modified to carry the new 17-pounder gun, as the previous 2-pounder and 6-pounders had not been effective against German rivals. The Firefly was so effective that German troops were ordered to prioritise the Firefly as a target in battle during the Second World War.
An extremely good kit with great detail and moving parts, but quite complex at times. Therefore I would only recommend this kit to more advanced modellers. I've found that subtle discolouration in the paintwork has given it quite a realistic look.
This kit is actually moulded by Tasca (formerly Asuka), known as a manufacturer of superbly engineered and well detailed Sherman kits, and re-boxed by Tamiya.

Now, when I did a similar M4A4 Sherman, I painted the road wheel assemblys before I glued them on the tank. However it looks like you managed it quite well. Looks amazing, Owen! Can't wait to see the finished model!

Yeah painting them first is a more sensible idea, I would have if the wheels hadn't been free to turn, which made it easier. Anyway thank you I'm glad you like it!!! :D

Good job Owen. On monochromatic surfaces, a dot filter works well. Multi color dots are applied, then with a solvent they are streaked out. This gives subtle tone variations to the surface. Just a suggestion.Bill.

Thanks Bill! I do actually remember seeing that in a magazine once, you're reminded me! Do you have to use oil paint for that? I'll have to try it on my Lancaster, whenever I get round to that... Anyway glad you liked it and thank you for the technique info :D
@PanzermansBunker
@PanzermansBunker 8 жыл бұрын
Owen, you can use oil or enamels .Trick is to seal the base coat 1st. Use of solvent in the method would eat into it otherwise. I do enamel dot filter on an acrylic base so no worries there. Glad to be of help. Bill.

Great vid. How do you decide when to use acrylic or enamel paint?
@timmy3822
@timmy3822 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Owen, don't know if you'll see this given this vid is a few years old now. I just bought the Tamiya 1/48 scale Sherman Firefly kit. However, I'm using acrylic paints as opposed to the enamels you're fond of (they're too smelly for my liking lol). The process you used to streak the paint down the sides to give it that varied/worn look, will that still work with acryllics? I understand they cure far quicker than the enamel paints, so unsure if you can replicate this blended appearance with them using cotton buds etc? I'm just starting modelling again after some twenty years so I'm very much back to basics, feel like I might frustrate myself as I tend to aim for perfection in most things. However instead of painting a picasso I feel like my skills are of a four year old slapping paint on paper for the first time lol.

Excellent brush work!!! FYI, for lengths of photo etch over two inches you should use PVA glue like you did rather than cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. The photo etch brass and the plastic have different contraction and expansion rates. If by chance your model were ever exposed to temperature fluctuations like Summer and Winter temps sitting to close to a window or by an air conditioner and heater, the lengthy photo etch pieces such as the mud-shields brackets "could" pop off if attached with the rigid CA glue rather than the more elastic PVA glue. Beautiful model; well done!

Yeah that's a good idea - when using enamels over enamels there's a chance it could strip the coat underneath especially when thinned a lot, so enamels over acrylic or vice versa is good

at my hobby stores, there are no humbrol acrylics, only tamiya acrylic( WHICH IS HORRIBLE FOR BRUSH PAINTING) model colour acrylic, and hombrol enamel. im aware of humbrols paint quality. im 10 yrs old, should i just risk it and but enamel? or stay with modle colour. when i use model colour, it feels very thin out of the bottle, and it feels like im brushing the model with water. is thi sgood or bad?

Very interesting results you achieved although it seems almost heresy to not use an airbrush on such a fine kit...lol. The build looks great don't get me wrong but it is next to impossible to use a preshading or postshading method without an airbrush that will let you regulate the amount of paint you can put down which will be microns thin. Your production quality is of course first rate as always and most impressive. This kit is now unobtanium btw long discontinued from Tamiya and it will not come back from my understanding. I may have mentioned this before but it is not necessary to "wash" your sprue's on most modern kits. Especially from Japanese makers that remove the mold release prior to boxing the kit. Perhaps on some Airfix kits or some of the more questionable eastern European makers this might be necessary but specifically nothing coming from Japan.
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
I understand the advantages of an airbrush and that this kit isn't produced by Tamiya any more don't worry! :) I'll remember about washing the kits (but surely it's best to do it anyway just in case?). Thank you, I'm glad you like the video and the build! :)
@TacticalJackalope
@TacticalJackalope 8 жыл бұрын
No worries I won't mention it again. I was just trying to save you some time and effort on future builds. I knew the Tamiya/Asuka relationship would be short lived. Since Tamiya recently retooled their own Sherman chassis I would suspect we will see a new Firefly from them very soon.

Once again great work, Owen. I like the idea of attaching the tools with PVA after painting but I'm wondering how strong connection is. I'd be afraid they would come loose by simply breathing on them. How strong would you say the bond is?
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I would say it's reasonably strong, though obviously I've never tried snapping a part off haha! The photoetch I attached with it has held up well, I think because it gives the bond some slight elasticity

And lastly, does this technique work on small scale tanks? (1/76) Sirry for all the questions, I kept thinking of more after asking :p
@ethan5354
@ethan5354 8 жыл бұрын
I think this technique would work on a smaller scale, but you'd have to tone it down a bit to match with the scale.
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
I agree with Ethan, the techniques would have to be made much smaller and more controlled to look realistic and in keeping with the scale. For example, some of the streaks on this are half a 1/35th figure's hand width, and if you think about how wide a 1/76th figures hand is... that's pretty small!! :)

@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
It's recommended that you use the same brand of thinner as the paint but that could just be a manufacturers myth to make you buy more of their products. If it's working fine for you then it must work, so I don't think you need to get Humbrol thinners :)

You should make a tutorial for properly rescribing panel lines after sanding because whenever I try using my knife, the cut is always very thin unlike the rest of the line.
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
To tell the truth I'm not very good at it myself haha! I have a Stanley knife which has a thicker blade which means I can score thicker lines if needed. So I'd recommend getting a thicker blade or angle your knife so the cut makes a 'V' and therefore looks thicker

hey owen i got a question. Since you usually mix paints to get the desired color when you have to apply 3-4 coats of paint and have to wait approx 1 day for each coat to dry how can you consistently apply the same color? Doesnt the paint get dry in the pallet
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
I only do the 3-4 coats thing for the main camoflage, and for that I buy the required colours (or use ones that look similar) so I don't have to mix anything consistently. For the streaking, it's obviously actually better if I have to mix it all the time as that creates more variety in the discolouration :)

Another great video and very inspiring. You mentioned tool colours. Virtually always they were painted the same colour as the vehicle. As the vehicle got painted so did the tools, all with the same paint. You will, however, see the tools painted in brown for the wood and silver, gun metal or black for the metal parts on most models, if for nothing else than a contrast in color. This is also perpetuated by re-enactors who like the look of the look of the difference also. Keep up the videos they are really very good and educational. You get amazing results without the use of an airbrush.

By the way, what paint to thinner ratio u cld recommend for some humbrol enamel paints(especially the newer ones) as my humbrol enamel 27 was more like a paste than paint when i first opened the bottle(the 7:1 paint to thinner ratio barely worked on it)

@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
Make sure you stir is well and then maybe use a ratio of 1 part thinner to 2 or 3 parts paint? Really there's no correct ratio, you just want something that is quite thin and runny - I tend to do it by eye. Sometimes the paint is too far gone and you just have to bin it :/

These are great videos and really inspiring for someone new to modelling like me. The simple format and your calm tone of voice makes it seem accessible and I appreciate your honesty in still learning. I also like that you have stuck to brush painting as I want to put together a few kits before deciding if I want to try airbrushing.

Thank you very much for your comments, that's really nice to hear! I'm glad you appreciate the effort I put in and also my choice not to use an airbrush :) Best of luck with your kits!

Nice video, but why do you not use airbrushes
@quickkits
@quickkits 8 жыл бұрын
There are multiple reasons why I don't airbrush but the main ones are: space, money and also I want to encourage younger people to pick up the hobby and I think an airbrush can be a bit daunting. Oh and I also just love using a brush :D
