Boomer, great paint techniques, I have now started to thin my paint even more, and do multiple thin passes, and it is coming out great, and the details are staying. Thank you for sharing your wonderful techniques, and absolutely great way of explaining how it all comes together. The having fun is super important, life is too short to not have fun. Cheers, and stay safe, Michael

Top drawer work as usual! You make me less afraid of my airbrush every day. Also, you are one of the few artists/modelers who explain the sciene and interaction of paints and mediums and how each works. Thank you so much for that! PS- Peanut says Dusty should get more screen time...

I cut out little oversized squares of wax paper that fit over the Tamiya jar opening, then I close the lid and tighten, letting the wax paper curl over the threads of the paint jar. Never have problems with opening a jar of paint. No channel locks require. Lol. Not sure where I learned this technique, but been doing this for years and it works.

Hi BD. As a tip. If you wet your brush and rub the bristles on a bar of soap it will help to preserve the bristles from the making fluid. You will need to peridically keep soaping your bristles. Wash it all out with warm water when finished. Hope that helps.

I haven't tried it on a model, but I there is an auto repair channel I watch that folds over one edge of masking tape which makes a feathered edge Instead of a hard edge. They do so they can blend new paint into old, but for us might look better for a weathered edge.

I’m generally pretty confident about what I undertake but watching what you do has definitely helped what I do, so thank you for sharing your techniques! I’m sure I’m taking in a ton. I have really enjoyed using Tamiya paint. I’m almost afraid to use Vallejo. I’ve picked up some of the Vallejo air for some other stuff. Anyhow, I really wanted to share how I’ve been watching this, and my mind keeps having to remember which one is the model and which is the printed reference. Also, I commented a while back about not enjoying your comment about “hobbling yourself as a modeler if you don’t have an airbrush.” I’ve since managed to buy an airbrush after a couple side jobs. It’s pretty sweet.
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it. I like to use Vallejo paint for touch-ups because it goes on well with a regular paint brush. Tamiya acrylic is basically airbrush paint. If you use Tamiya with a traditional brush it tends to cut through the first layers some. On the other hand, I believe it is one of the best airbrush paints out there.

About that "Conrail" blue, i think it´s wise when using photos like you do, to use layout lighting, since that´s where model will be. For the blue, or any color it´s easy. Particularly in the case of neon or led type to create false shades just as under natural sun. Cares to bring that effect logically among static items on layout. Boomer could draw a line on its model, then use the two color grades to fake sunny wall part from the shade one. The opposite is also possible. If too dark is top of the wall due to shade from roof overhang, paint that part lighter. In magazine, too often those parts are far too somber due to poor lightning. Before painting put item in exact location and angle. Take a photo and you´ll see those subtle shades. Then play with them. Just an other crazy idea from me to make things more complex...😊

You can also play around with lighting - endlessly - as well.

Good morning from Australia Boomer. After watching your amazing channel now for a year or two and building up all the fantastic products you've mentioned over the time I'm finally ready to cut some base board. Just wanted to share a bit of technology I'm using in combination with all your amazing real-world lessons. Having a background also in film but in the 3D digital effects side of it I'm currently looking to Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated or created imagery as inspiration for run down sidings, factories or buildings like the slum landlord architecture and your factory sidings. It's a fantastic way to get inspiration if you don't have access to older style run down factories or buildings or just creating or needing some references for paint colours building styles or adding a general look and feel into a scene before you commit to building anything. Using all todays technology mixed with your master classes in real-world modelling is an amazing way to learn and develop a style or feeling into the layout when looking to start a scene from scratch. Just wanted to share and also inspire your members if they have a blockage with creating or looking for a style or ideas for their layouts. Thank you again for your, time, patience and generosity and all the knowledge you share with us all. Have a wonderful day Cam

Thank you for sharing those new ideas Cameron, they sound awesome! I was not aware of (AI) as a source of artistic inspiration. Congratulations on your new layout underway. Hi Boomer, love the blooper and I feel your pain about the favorite color. I was shaking a "bottle" of paint that had a 12mm metal nut inside to mix the paint. I was so excited to paint that I got over zealous shaking the thing and the bottle exploded all over me and the work area besides. It was not water based paint either. As an added feature I was wearing shorts. Spray on. Oh, I haven't painted since.

Oh no! This is one reason why I use acrylic water-based paint. No harm done. ;-)

I'm really interested in the colors that you use. I've gone through many of your videos to find what colors of Tamiya that you use. Have you ever put together a list of the ones that you use 80% of the time. I don't have a list for your Vallejo paints that you use 80% of the time? I'm sure that I am not the only one who would benefit from such a list. Maybe these two lists could be a short Vlog or two here?

I use all the earth tones with black & white. There is no one default set of color you just pick up as you begin to paint and build up your kit. I also list all the paint I use in the video tutorials as well - with numbers, etc.

Hey Boomer Great video and very timely. I’m in the process of scratch building a representation of the old Chelsey Furniture factory here in Ontario for my 50s era layout. It is a yellow brick building and I have been thinking about how I would approach painting it. @boomerdiorama9 ай бұрын
Tamiya (XF) Flat paint is acrylic primer. Why shoot primer? Primer is already built into Tamiya Acrylic paint. No need for primer unless the model is metal.
@jamesfisk27589 ай бұрын
@@boomerdioramaI did not know that. I've always used primer on Tamiya hard body RC bodies.

just curious as I've not seen it in any video yet. I do have some Tamiya but I don't use it a lot, more a Vallejo and Instar (UK paint company), but not seen you using the Tamiya X-20 Thinner. I only ask as I've always been told you must use the Tamiya Thinner with the Tamiya paint. Another reason for not using them that much
@boomerdiorama5 ай бұрын
I use X-20 thinner sometimes on a special locomotive or model. Most of the time I use 50% to 99% IPA to thin with. Been doing it for over thirty years now and never had a problem.

Hi Boomer, have a question for you, for painting styrene with a brush and
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
I don't normally use Tamiya with a brush unless I paint terrain, then I use Alcohol or water. Alcohol is better to help penetrate the texture and reduce surface tension. If you paint plastic with Tamiya using a brush it tends to cut through the previous layers especially if you thin with Alcohol, so I would use water. I recommend Vallejo when painting with a brush on plastic though. Don't use Alcohol to thin Vallejo - use water.
