Your pencil drawing works as a grisaille underpainting for the glazes you are layering. I absolutely love your work! Thank you for sharing.

As an alternative, instead of using oil paints, use dissolved oil pastels with linseed oil. A little quantity of the pastel will last you a lot and it will be really sheer for making your layering super strong, besides it dries fast.

This was so satisfying to see the glazes go down. Cant wait to see the different layers

I would really recommend having a white base underneath everything. The reason for this is that light travels through the glazed layers and reflects back of the white giving a more luminous look. Maxfield Parrish is well known for this.

Danika! Try mixing your oils with Liquin Fine Detail from W&N brand. It gives me beautiful glazes but also dries very quickly which helps like crazy!

This was my favorite oil technique in art school! I remember making an underpainting with burnt sienna, although I've seen green or blue used too, to make the values. I mixed the paint with Liquin to make the glazes, it makes a very luminous piece :)

This is lovely. You may also enjoy using oils over your watercolor paintings on cotton paper, because you can do the same thing as you did here with sealing the wood. Lioba Brückner does that sometimes with nearly completed watercolor paintings, seals them with spray to not disturb the color as much as a brush on clear gesso/sealer. It's a great way to bridge both worlds! I look forward to seeing you experiment more with this :)

This is so interesting, I’ve never seen someone use oils in this kind of illustrative style (I feel like most people at least on online platforms use a more traditional/realistic style with oils). It’s so cool! And as a watercolor artist who wants to dive into oils soon I now feel like I have an idea of how to tackle it. :)

i think lachri fine art has some videos on oil painting with glazes!! its a technique she uses a lot when she paints oils on top of acrilyics. worth looking at her channel, i love her videos

I think I’ve suggested it before on one of your videos, but look into Wylie Beckert. One of the techniques they use is oil glaze over pencil drawings using walnut oil as a glazing medium.

I am trying to develop a similar technique for scientific illustration. I want to use oils and not watercolours because I already have a lot of oil paints and want to stay in oils. This was VERY HELPFUL. Thanks!!!

Linseed oil can yellow over time, so I prefer Liquin. I use Gamsol & Turpentine/Turpenoid too. You might consider a different ground with a cream or white finish rather than transparent if the wood grain showing through is seeming to dull your glazes. Great start, it's just not finished is all. More glazes! 👍

Linseed oil helps in glazing. You can use it to produce various layers of multiple colors. And thinners help in thinning down the heavy texture of oil colors. Kind of like using more water to thin down watercolors.

I've never worked with oils, so when you started the wash/glaze for the background and it was so dark I felt my heart sink and thought "I am NOT confident enough to use that bold a colour". The way you turned it into a pale teal was amazing though!!!

Hi Danica, I am in art school and am a painter as well. I focus mainly on oil painting. If you want a thin, transparent layer try a combination of 1/3 refined Linseed oil and 2/3 turpentine. Oil paint is simply linseed oil mixed with pigment, by adding more oil, you will reduce the pigment and increase the transparency. If you want to build up layers, use less and less oil on each layer. Hope this helps!

This was awesome! I've been at oils for about a year. Before this I was doing mostly watercolors. And I had been racking my brain trying to figure out if it was even possible to use watercolor techniques with oil paintings. A few days ago in an art group I'm in on Facebook, someone had brought up the same topic. I will definitely link this to the group so others can watch. I really like that you went outside of the normal standards. Art shouldn't have any rules, it should always be about exploration and expressing yourself. Stepping away from what's normal. I can't wait to see part 2 and how it turns out in the end. As far as glazes go I've been pretty good with glazing and I enjoy just using galkyd gel honestly. Neo megilp is another good one for glazing as well as it's also a gel type substance plus it help with drying. Not sure what brand of paint you use but these are Gamblin products. They're the only ones that I ever use for oil painting. Thanks again for great video, keep up the good work! Also what is your Instagram??

I'm not a oil painter but I know a little glazing is a oil painting term invented for oil painting and glazing requires transparent colours just look on the oil paint tubes
@victoriavidaud5 жыл бұрын
I really want to experiment with transparent acrylics for similar methods, the glazing and stuff like that so it has the transparency but not the drying time of oils. They may be great for blending, but a patient person I am not lol

i want to try oils sooo bad but it feels so scary and foreign (and potentially expensive) to me.... I work only in watercolors but I've always wanted to try doing an oil painting just with glazes and work with oils in a way that my watercolor brain can make sense of. Great job on this piece!! Can't wait to see your next attempts in oil :)
