Got new RTA kitchen cabinets and saved 25% ($1800) by getting them unfinished. Used some of that savings to buy good paint and a new airless sprayer plus FFLP tips. Have never spray-painted. Watched your video(s) over and over (especially this one). Managed to do a good enough job on 12 drawerfronts and 19 cabinet doors such that my wife was very happy. In fact, she said I should thank you, so, THANKS!

You're totally awesome, I do the same process myself, I use an inspection light to , I go over cabinets and use Bondo lacquer putty for my fine finish repairs, I usually will prime again even though the lacquer putty has good enamel hold out, I will do it for coverage mostly. I'm right handed so when I'm actually spraying my cabinet boxes or trim or doors I'll carry my light with my left hand and more left to right so I can see what I'm doing and cast my shadow off of my work. Thank you so much for your awesome knowledge and expertise.

Is an air assisted a big difference? Quality, ease etc? What about HVLP?? What’s your pref? I like airless, but even with a 211 tip I feel that it can spray too heavy, especially for intricate woodwork. We want a little bit more of a delicate fan and crannies without runs because of paint buildup.

@@maguirre8444 hey Jerry. I'm a pro cabinet maker and I've been spraying my own woodwork for about 8 years. I'd say my finish quality is excellent. I personally use Scuff-X top coat from Benjamin Moore. It is widely considered to be the best top coat out there by pros right now. It's a thick finish tho. You can't really spray it out of an HVLP because it's so thick. I've done it before... But you start to lose adhesion by thinning it down. You can go get a Graco X7 from Home Depot for about $450, then get a fine finish tip (310 or 410) and then crank that airless up to max PSI and that Scuff X will lay down smooth as glass as long as your surface is prepped properly. Scuff X doesn't really like thick coats tho. You'll need to spray thin coats.

@@MaydaysCustomWoodworks stix primer and MH ready patch. Do you always sand between every coat?
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks 3 жыл бұрын
@@lexandersantana8089 if I want it to look as good as possible then I will always sand between the coats of primer. With Scuff X I will only sand in between coats if I screw something up lol. Other than that it seems like I can hit the next coat without sanding... But I only do that if it was recent from my last top coat. Meaning the bottom layer isn't fully cured. If it's been like... A week or two since my last top coat I will feel more comfortable sanding it first. Idk if that's required. But that's always what I've done to be safe. Also ... Recently the Stix primer I've bought has been thicker and it's been getting a little bit of minor fish eye while spraying. I wonder if they've reformulated it recently. This last job I used it on it took me a while to sand out those fish eyes... In the past it was never an issue. So I am currently considering using other primers because of that issue. Other than that, Stix is amazing. I tested some Monobond interior/exterior bonding primer. It's Kelly Moore's version of Stix. It is super thick, so you'll need to spray it out of an airless. But it seemed to perform really well so far. I'll be testing it more today. I may be switching to that instead of Stix. Time will tell.

Every time I try to paint cabinets with an airless its a nightmare. Only thing i cant think of is the product. Using the titan 440 impact, same gun, and ive tried every tip from 310 fine finish to the fancy 517 HEA(?) Tip. Always have to crank up the PSI to get an even fan but by then there's too much product coming out. Spraying the door hanging so the bottom inside corner always gets build up. Only solution I can think of is thinning the product or switch products all together. 10% thinning doesnt seem like itd be enough but who knows. Weve tried Sherwin premium wood and wall primer, their fast dry primer, zinners smart prime and water base primer. All are a nightmare to sand. For top coats weve tried emerald trim enamel and thats about it. Not sure if you guys have a miller paint store in Idaho but this go around were trying their acrylite. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. I can already tell its gonna be the same ol battle just based on how thick the product is. If it was my choice, id use our capspray 115 every time. Might spray slower but the time saved in sanding flaws is well worth it on top of the money saved on product. Airless seems to take 2-3 times more

Yeh we use 400 or 500 on top coats and 2 coats of primer sanded with 240 first then 320 next
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks 3 жыл бұрын
@@hlg_theshepherd2873 right. Mine is usually similar. I like to just do a single heavy coat of Stix primer. It can bridge gaps and go on stupid thick without cracking or anything like that. So I usually just do one single thick coat of that. And one coat will be enough to sand and not burn through into the wood as long as we are using beech, maple, or MedEx MDF. But something like Poplar can take 2 or 3 heavy prime coats. I usually sand with 240 and then 400 on that same single heavy coat. Then come back with 2 or 3 light top coats of Scuff-X if i'm on my airless. That's what I'll use if it's gonna be in a kitchen or something that might have water contact. If it's gonna be like a closet or an entertainment center or something I don't mind using vinyl sealers and pigmented lacquers or something. But ya.... Super interesting that he said 150g. If it covers properly then no harm no foul. But I'm very interested to see the "glass smoothness" once it's dried.

No idea what he used but Zinsser BIN shellac based primer is pretty much the gold standard primer for cabinet work. Sprays like a dream straight out of the can, sands easy, dries fast, stops tannin and other stains. Strong solvent smell but dries fast so smell doesn't linger for long. Alcohol clean up. No idea why but ever since covid prices for it have skyrocketed. Still worth biting your tongue and using it. Graco 310 ff tip is what I use with it.

Every few times we run into different issues like holidaze (fish eyes) or slow dry times, sticking to our racks (we have the same art racks as you do). I know I bought great machines I am just running into issues that I would like solutions to, most issues are the same that you have ran into. I'm more a painter/ plasterer than a furniture finisher. But 150 grit sand paper isn't a super fine grit. I'm thinking 300 grit or 400 grit. Also Bondo doesn't take stain as well as other wood fill products and dries pinkish so not ideal for a clear finish either and since this is an interior wood project Bondo wouldn't be my choice. I guess more about time than quality and the number of layers he is doing.

@@WEALRO Interesting I thought grit was a standard, grit particles average diameter. though different countries use different identifiers. I thought if your talking 150 then that's the standard 150. If your talking P150 then that would be a standard P150 which is slightly coarser than 150. ( but only slightly and not a discernible difference) I think its more what your working on weather the sandpaper is fine or medium for that application. because if you were working on a metal gloss finish you may use a 5000 grit sand paper which you would never use working on wood. But I would have thought to use something higher than 150 for a finishing sanding on wood. I have never heard of Surfprep and find it peculiar that they have a different standard for labeling their sandpaper grit as you suggest. Surfprep web site describes 150 as a medium.

hello, wondered why is my "freshly painted cabinets" mud cracking. it started cracking in different spots as it dried, some parts are ok. i painted them outside in a tent. california temp is 65 and hum 75. sanded cabinets and wiped them down before painting. had used rust-oleum latex primer before and it seemed to be ok. can i lightly sand them and paint primer over again?

Were they previously painted? What paint did you use for topcoating? If you used an oil based topcoat over a waterborne base it can do exactly as you describe.

I actually like the way you are using water-based paint. Too many VOCs in our houses as it is. I have only 30 beadboard kitchen cabinets to prep and paint, all hand made so consistency in cabinet dimensions will never quite be there either. What fun, but at least it has character and you don't get that with flat pack furniture.

So I have a HF airless sprayer and I sprayed some trim in my house a while back. I took your advice and bought a 310 tip to try and conserve paint / be more precise. Spraying Sherwin Williams emerald paint it clogged the tip immediately, I cleared a few times & kept clogging so I switched back to the 515 to do the job. Is it just my cheapo sprayer? Or is there something I'm missing. The 310 said it was suggested for stains.

Must have been the harbor freight tips or the sprayer, I run HEA tips 310 and 515 using a titan 440 and it always works great for almost everything, lots of possible culprits can cause clogs

I just did a set of cabinets but the wood grain was so deep I wasn’t able to fill them with enough primer/laqure. Could still see some vary light dark shadows of the wood grain, couldn’t figure out how to get it as beautiful as yours, maybe I need to do more sanding

@@njmallday yeah, I’m going to try to use an airless sprayer next time using 208 tips and lay the doors down instead of hanging them. I hear a vinyl sealer is good so I may try that

Not sure if you have a video that really goes in depth with bondo vs spackling but would really like a super indebt video about it seems like I run in to it all the time where nail holes aren't filled 100% on mdf and so on. (I did watch the video on filling nail holes too) but especially with something critical like cabinet doors i would assume you might not want to just use spackling on them?
@Idahopainter
@Idahopainter 3 жыл бұрын
Bondo glazing putty is for smaller holes. It shrinks a lot. However it is harder and sands finer to eliminate stuff spackle will not like brush marks ect. Spackle is to soft and does not bond as well to do this.

I can't get a smooth coat to save my life. I'm using a graco fine finish tip with airless sprayer. I'm shooting it outdoors because that the only place I have but I have come to the conclusion that it's my technique. I turn the pressure as low as I can get it without having drips and a good pattern. Any advise on what I may be doing incorrectly. Thanks.

Could be material is thick/wrong size tip. Could also be that you are moving to fast and not laying down a good film. That’s just the first couple that come to mind. Hard to say for certain. What material and set up are you using?
@shaynesabala
@shaynesabala 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuasmith448 I’m using lacquer with a graco sprayer and a fine finish tip. Last weekend I started out putting thin coats and letting them dry between coats. That was giving me more of the same so I ended up putting down multiple coats one after another to really soak it and that worked perfectly. I thought that I was supposed to run this tip with low pressure but now I’m thinking that the pressure was too low and I wasn’t spraying enough paint. I’m just not sure how it’s going to work on the bathroom cabinets because I can’t put it on that heavy or it will run. I think I will up the pressure some and do the other doors to see how it comes out before I shoot the cabinet.

Love your channel. I am new to spraying and would like to invest in an HVPL(Fuji) or Airless Sprayer(Graco 17G180 Magnum ProX19 Cart Paint Sprayer) with 308/310 tip to spray builder grade cabinets. Which would be easier to use and give the finer/professional finish.
