The colour wheel is all you need to get started. That tells you what colours neutralize others and that’s a great basis. And just know if you have a colour that’s too dark sprayed out(which is very common) and you want it to lighten up by pulling black out, that’s going to make every other toner in the formula more powerful and more prominent in the colour. So you normally have to compensate for that by pulling out small amounts of others

A quick comment from an automotive coatings specialist. Bumpers will always be difficult to match E2E especially colours that travel a lot (large differences in face to mid to flop angles). Some have said in the comments that it's down to substrate (plastic vs metal) whilst true to a certain degree, is not the major factor. A phenomenon called geometric metamerism plays a huge part in perceived poor colour match. Put simply, its the slight difference in angle where the parts meet. That's why even when you blend in to the wings, a difference is still observed. A little trick that I used in the field demonstrates this perfectly. Take a painted thin metal test panel and flip it over paint side down on a surface with a little give. Next lay a ruler or straight edge over half of the panel and lightly scribe with a biro to make a slight crease in the panel. Turn the panel back over and see the effect. I used to align the crease where the bumper meets the wing to illustrate to customers the real issue.

I think the bumper covers and the rest of the body on vehicles age (ie: fade) differently. If you need to replace a front or rear bumper cover, I'd point out to the customer that you're planning to match that to the rest of the vehicle and do they want you to repaint the other one to match as well? Most people don't notice any anomalies, until after a body shop has touched their vehicle.

looks great. when using a spray out card, make sure to check the "face"(the color 90 degrees straight in front of the eyes) and the "flop"(the color on an angle). the flop will show a different color than the face color. so for this reason when checking a spray out card, check the face and flop. you may get the face right but when you look at an angle the flop color maybe off. also check the flake size for metallic colors. this was a A+ paint class video
@mikaso200420002 жыл бұрын
small advice from my workshop.we always hunt daylight for checking spray out card's.we do have different sun guns for bad weather and winter,3M,scangrip...but most important is that always 3 people watch the sample's in the same time.people have different quality of eyes,the one who hold sample only see the face while those looking aside have better picture.on light metalics spraying samples with one or more layer of clearcoat will change ton.wet and 1 day dry samples will differ!force drying samples with IC drayer can change ton especially on dark colours(avoid it)never trust light in spray booth(neon or led)....if customer take the job with sunglasses ,don;t worry😀

great points on the bumpers. I think maybe I would want to do both bumpers to get them closer to the metal body, but i guess I can see people wanting to keep it looking like factory. I never really thought about the reason the color looks off is because of the difference in the reflection on plastic verses metal. I was impressed with how you could discern the green and red hues in the color. I didn't realize there was so many selections from the same OEM paint for a particular car. I found this to be a great video, and I agree that it can be more efficient to replace a bumper sometimes rather than try to repair it. some people are concerned with bringing the value of the car down with after market parts. Personally, I'm not so worried about that; at least not with my present truck; who knows, I get another truck and I may change how I feel about that! Great video, Brian! Thanks!

Great content! But I’m going to challenge you on the “don’t sand the sealer” comment. You can correct a lot of minor issues by sanding the sealer rather than the base. It’s a little faster and helps kick the problem that needs attention a little easier. Try sanding the sealer with 1500. I think people say not to sand sealer because it doesn’t sand well with anything more aggressive than 1500.
@wazid01222 жыл бұрын
tech rep from the paint shop when he was doing a demo on sealers said after a hour depending on paint brand you using you can sand any imperfections on the sealer before you base but you will have to scuff the entire panel with a 1000

Man.. all I'm gonna say is we work in a tough industry. We recently painted the side of a metallic red Mazda (replaced rear door, blended into front door and rear quarter) and then they proceeded to complain because the already mismatched front and rear bumper didn't match the fresh paint that we did. Needless to say that was a nightmare and we ended up making little on the job. Also just wanted to say that I love these vids and have personally learned a lot from them but as a ppg deltron user I had to figure out how to do certain things with our own system ( like how to make clear base). One thing I find that happens, and I'm not sure how to really correct it, is that when you put fresh clear onto a panel you're blending in to it seems to make the color look darker than it originally was. I try to always 800 panels down to eliminate most of the original clear but it still happens.
@jtirado21362 жыл бұрын
I sprayed Deltron for about 15 yrs and ran into the darkening clear coat effect alot. Always seems to be worse on Hondas for some reason. Especially on light metallic colors. I found that if you stop a little short from the edge on the first coat of clear and then do a full coat of clear the panel doesn't look as dark to the adjacent panels.
@MrDuLukes2 жыл бұрын
Clearcoat isn't 100% clear. Depending on the brand they turn yellow or darker often. Also with the added layers of clear, the light has to travel through more layers, and gets broken different, alternating the colour beneath and/or giving it a magnifying-effect. It truly is a tough industry, sometimes you get those jobs where you don't make money or even lose some, got to get that back in different jobs then, learn from it and talk with the customer to make sure he/she understands what will be done and why.
@altairtheeagle2 жыл бұрын
Buff your blend panel with a white wool pad BEFORE you sand, then prepsol it and sand. The buffing “cleans” the weathered clear, then your first coat of clear should only go to your blend, the 2nd to whole panel to prevent refraction.
@jamesofallthings368410 ай бұрын
They can either pay for it, or take a hike. Stop catering to ignorance. I'm not going to pay out of my pocket to do extra panels. Red changes rapidly out in the sun. Pick the best spot and match it then blend what you can. I deal with that crap all the time. I'm not a magician. These expectations need to be set before you even start the job.

Love your channel 🥰... Sorry for contacting you this way, as a boomer I'm not really up on all the how toos of the web. 😁. That said... I'm in the market for a tier 2 gun/s... I was leaning towards the kiwami 4 until I say your review of the NoName base gun... Did you ever try their clear gun? They are comparably priced. I like that the NN has taken the guess work out for a base and clear gun as well as the local(FL) support and supplies... I recall you making similar comments about both Guns so I have to ask... Which set(base/clear) would you buy? And if the Iwata... What Needle and cap set would you choose since NN has already covered that in their set. Again I can't thank you enough for all of the wonderful information you have and continue to provide.... 👍👍👍

I ordered small bottles of paint NT2 and it didn’t match, I talked to them they have a guarantee. But is it user error is there something I could do to make it match better? When you buy these paints as a DIY it comes pre mixed. And I don’t have the ability to mix and match the paint.
