In this episode of Paint Society we dive deep into analyzing the 3m Performance Spray Gun. We put it through the test by spraying every single coating from Primer to Clearcoat. With today's market there are so many options to choose from so we determine if the 3M Performance Spray Gun measures up and does it offer more versatility than other spray guns on the market?

My girl worked in a shop that manufactured custom and universal metal cabinets with shelves. They used the 3m gun exclusively to paint every piece that came out. She now sprays boat parts in a different shop for Four Winns. She now loves that gun and says it makes what she does much easier time wise. Yeah she can spray much better than myself to. 😢🍻

This is funny but I want to repaint all my non fiberglass parts on my Four Winns .. any chance she would give me a good process (prep, prime , paint and seal). I’ve only painted some auto panels.

I remember back in the day I use to work at a boat manufacturing company... man fixing cracks and imperfections rebuilding fiberglass parts etc. Was in repair n refinishing... spraying gel coat and wet sanding and buffing. I kinda miss those days. Definitely different than automotive repair but not bad to have that knowledge as well...

I will add that the gun is serviceable, you can replace seals,trigger,needle, lock collar. For the price it’s hard to beat when you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars buy multiple guns. The only thing I don’t like is the gauge, mine get stuck. And the price you showed with that kit is a good price, i paid 270 just for the gun thru my jobber. Great video as always. Look forward to seeing the next.

Very nice job. I don't paint enough anymore to justify buying a nice new gun, but it's still interesting to see what's out there. I'm still using an old pressure pot for primer

I enjoy watching artisan's do their craft. You're awesome and very comforting to watch when painting. Thanks for the video, bud! :) So I guess for hobbyists like myself, if I want something that's beginner friendly, I should spend the extra dough and get the better gun with better atomization. Which is understandable. For now, I am sticking with pre-mixed rattle cans from the paint store. I'm almost there, but I am finding myself spending more going this route. But your blurb (and constant mention) says using a sealer before the base coat. Think if I do the same thing with my rattle cans, I wouldn't go through cans like a fat bambino in a candy store? Not getting any runs or fish eyes or anything. It's just painting bumpers, or doors, or even a hood, I go through cans like mad. Reason being is when I use a light, I see some low spots (light shines to the primer), and I have to put a couple more VERY light coats. The 2K primer, I don't seem to go through as much. I use the Eastwood 2K clear. Have any tips?

Nice detailed look at this gun. I love the fast clean, quick change aspect, but think I better stick with my Iwattas. Got a 1.3 and 1.4 for home shop use. Restoring cars has become a bit of a compulsion Working on my own projects, but word is getting around and I'm getting some interest from people who want some budget work done on their rides. These are primarily folks who can't afford to go to a pro shop but want their car to look better. Turning something I really like to do into a sideline has been a theme for me much of my life, so I guess it's inevitable...😂 Great content. I'll pick up some merch to support the channel after vacation time is over and I start working that overtime again👍👍👍

Great video! I have really been looking at this gun for home use, I have a compressor that can handle it. I am also looking to use it at work where we spray thick enamel on commercial equipment. Do you think it would be a good choice? I am one of those that can't afford to buy multiple guns for multiple paints.

Statement of the year, sealer is a lot cheaper than base coat. You’re not saving anything by not sealing and you’re not building the proper mil thickness on new parts if you don’t seal. Do you want to know if someone is an actual professional painter? Did he start off with sealer? No? Well you have a hint. Not the be all end all but when I see someone not seal a new part or body work most of the time, my decision is made. Just my 30 years and platinum PPG certification opinion. Im glad you pointed it out. I’m really thinking about one of these guns. My other top choice is a DV1. Can’t make up my mind.

Thanks Eric. I totally agree. Not everyone realizes the benefits of sealer. Rather they think it slows them down.
@RPista

the thing is that the gun will always depend on buying new tips as well & for the diy’er it’s better to take the time & just clean out the paint gun. i can see why a body shop would like this because it saves them time & management can buy them replacements on the fly but to each their own & whatever tickles their fancy lmao what matters is to just get out there & paint

@paintsociety, What gun would you recommend to be easier to spray with for a at home amateur that’s just learning how to paint? I’m thinking possibly in your upper tier 2 to lower tier 3 categories. Nice job, Brian. I like watching professionals work as you can get a great paint job with just about any gun. Looks like you mostly use Sikkens, but what "budget" paint would you recommend? On my project cars I sometimes have a hard time spending $1200+ for paint, clearcoat, etc on a $3000 car. Not going for show quality, but everyone wants a nice finish in the end.

Always go with the best clearcoat you can afford, because that is what gives your job longevity. The basecoat is only the color layer. When doing collision repair and blending you need to use the better quality basecoats, because they are formulated to blend and match better.

I have an acuspray. It was a waste of money. I haven't even been able to lay down primer with it. Now it's just taking up space in my toolbox. Very disappointed. The paint shop wouldn't take it back for a return they said no one had ever complained about it before. They wanted to have a rep from 3m come to my shop to show me how to use it. Cause now it's rocket science.

Not a bad gun for the person in a garage the price is lower, and cleaning is easier the prices of solvents these days makes a difference. The number of times get out of a tip would be idle for small amount of work one is doing. Investing $1000 in a spray gun use once in a while really doesn't make sense. One thing I noted was 13 CFM needed at 20 PSI probably beyond what most home compressors can handle to do an entire car need a larger 60-gallon tank.
