Recently had a remodel done. Had the painter paint a handrail that was previously stained. We took the handrail off to change out the supports and found the painter didn’t finish painting the bottom… thin coat, brush marks, not sanded. He used the Emerald Urethane. I’ve sanded. Some primer shows, but no wood. Ready to paint, but want to avoid brush marks. Should I use Floetrol with this paint?

Emerald Urethane is still an oil. Specifically its a urethane modified alkyd. It only resists yellowing, it can still yellow if there's no exposure to sunlight.

Hello Guys - You both are amazing in explaining the paints and differences. Here is my requirement, I wanted to paint on the outer surface of the terracotta (earthen) coffee mug (smooth surface so far, Do I have sand? if yes what should be the grit/grade?), I have few queries - How could I make the paint on the mug microwave safe, food safe, dishwasher safe? so that paint persists as it is done for the first time. Do I have use any primer or wax coat(do I have sand?? what should be the grade?) before painting and last but not the least I want to present this paint with glass like transparent in appearance on top of the paint, do I have to use any sealant or resin coating on top of the paint (do I have to sand after painting too? grade??)? If yes what it should be? or paint alone is sufficient to help me accomplish the above features? How many times I have to sand? Thank you in advance. I can share the images of the material if you share your email id.

This is the first time I’m going to use the hp I loved the emerald . I will say one thing about how tough it is . I have a work van and the hood was pretty chipped up bad . Looked terrible showing up to jobs so I got some of the left over emerald I had in the garage and rolled it on the hood . I figured it couldn’t look worse than the bare hood showing ….. 2 years later it’s just now starting to chip . I will add I’m in TEXAS where it’s very very very very hot and humid and the sun beams on my hood from the morning till 8 pm making that hood extremely hot ….. I’m not covered at the house so it’s taken the heat . The rain , the ice we’ve been having and held up for 2 years . Another crazy thing is I never prepped the hood and didn’t even wash it I wanted it to be the worst conditions possible to see how it held up ….. emerald is another level man ……2 years no prep , dirty hood , direct sun , not covered parking , etc and it’s just now chipping off not to mention the majority of it over 90 percent is still holding up , I can’t even scratch it off I’ve dried . It’s on their …..

If painting over oils or varnish you need to sand with 150 grit or 180. In the case of cabinets we still prime for safety

I'm wondering if this "urethane paint" formulation is same or similar to car paint? Can you thin/reduce this paint; or catalyze it (as they do for car paints)? Can you use the paint you are showcasing as car paint?

I’m picky, but I’m an amateur, so you’ve got me concerned about brush painting urethane. You mentioned using a sprayer instead. It would be great to hear what sprayer system and tips you’d recommend for doing new trim and how to set up a spray area in my garage.
