This is why I love this as a hobby. So many solutions.

I was told I needed a Maths when I started years ago. But it turns out that Maths is not a great envelope and it is not the best LFO and not the best at other things. So I sold it within months and got an envelope, an LFO and other CV controls. But now there is also the Tip Top Buchla 281t to get what Maths was copying originally as well.

Saying Maths is a copy of the 281t is a bit like saying a Toyota Camry is a copy of a Mini Cooper; they both achieve roughly the same purpose with similar methods, yes, but their commonalities kinda end there. Maths isn't really a direct copy of anything but rather a step in a whole lineage of function generators. I guess the Maths and the Rampage have more in common with the DUSG if you really want to try to draw a direct line of inspiration. Other than that I do agree with you that Maths (and its Behringer clone, Abacus) isn't the best at any of the things it does. To me at least, its convenience comes more from it being a toolbox; I may have a better LFO or envelope individually, but thinking of Maths more as an "analog computer" really starts to unlock its true potential as both a source and processor of modulation. I do think its overhyped in its importance to Eurorack but for certain mindsets and patching techniques it really does make perfect sense, while for others (for example modular systems that are rave boxes or songwriting tools that rely only on packaged voices and digital sequencers) maybe less so.

Awesome, digging into this later! Don't have a maths, but have the Cosmotronic Delta-V which has similar features, so will be fun to experiment 😊
