Touch OSC is a MIDI control surface for your old iPad, tablet, or phone to work with your DAW and other software. We are using the latest version of Touch OSC, Mk2. Hexler (hexler.net/touchosc) came out with the 2nd version (Mk 2) of Touch OSC in the summer of 2021.

Hi Tim! I am hoping to ask for some help as I am at a standstill. Here is the gist of my dilemma: Operating system: MacOS Sonoma 14 TouchOSC MkII TouchOSC Protokol TouchOSC Bridge iPad Pro (2020) running iOS 17 (being used as a control surface through TouchOSC Bridge) Logic Pro X MUSIO Kontakt 7 I have been able to successfully link my MacBook to my iPad so that I can display TouchOSC templates and operate them. I confirm that both MIDI note-on and MIDI CC data is being recorded via Protokol. I can hear MIDI CC changes (CC11 and CC1) when playing any specific patch in Logic. Woo! Where I am struggling is being able to trigger keyswitches via a button in a TouchOSC template. I am pretty confident that the parameters I set are correct (based off of the KZbin video that you put out). Again, I can see MIDI data is being transmitted with these note-on buttons via Protokol. However, there is nothing being triggered in the patch. What am I missing? I have tried looking all the various connections to see if I missed something and I have come up empty each time. I am hoping that there is an angel out there who has the answer. Thank you!

For key switches, have you tried using MIDI Note-On messages instead of CC? This would send a message like "C-1" or "F#-3" and could be the keyswitch without having to map a CC. The other thing to watch out for with Key Switches is that often buttons push and send a signal once, not continuously. So if you're trying to change between two different sound-types (ex: pizz, staccato, legato strings), you would need to hold the button down while you're playing. A way around this would be to use a toggle button instead, that way it "holds the key down."

Is there a way to add faders like Modulation & vibratos for the same instrument track?

Ya you should be able to have those faders send a MIDI CC message that would work across tracks.

I don't know if it's because i'm on Logic Pro 11, but the only things that work are the transport controls. when I select the channel strip the EQ pops up, not when I select EQ. I think the instrument pops up when I select EQ. Everything works as expected on my MacBook Air, just the iPad behaves strangely.

Hmmm, I haven't tried yet with version 11, but are you setting specific OSC messages or MIDI learn?

Hi Tim, thanks for the videos! Can't believe there is so little info about this on the internet, you're literally the only place I can hope to get help. I finally got it kinda up and running. However, the TouchOSC is not making any changes in Logic? If I do anything in Logic, it doesn't show in the App either. The only thing that works is when I select a track in Logic, it's being selected on the iPad too. So that means Logic is communicating to the iPad, but not the other way round I guess? I have no clue what I'm missing here :(

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. There will be more videos soon! First thing I'd recommend is check the connections on apple to make sure the iPad is connected. You can also test your connections with Protokol. It's possible your receive port on your iPad needs to change. @@TimCorpus Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah that's the thing, it is connected, it shows up in the logic controller setup, and it's activated in the Midi setup too. I feel like I've just missed one little setting but can't figure it out. I did follow all the steps up until 4:00 (this video) and it works except after that if i do anything on the iPad, it doesn't shop up in Logic. Adding and selecting tracks in Logic does show on the iPad though. Does it have to do with the Bridge setup maybe? Or the Network (Client/Server) settings maybe?

@@TimCorpus So I've tried the protokol app and nothing is going through. Also in the desktop Touch OSC if i activate the Log, strangely enough only OSC controls are going through but no Midi. Any ideas?

Good to know. So ya it sounds like MIDI isn't being accepted. 1: Check the MIDI Devices program in Apple to make sure it's acknowledging the device. 2: Check MIDI connections on the TouchOSC app. Are you using wired or wireless?

No idea what I did exactly, I messed with the settings in both the iPad and the desktop app. Now I can control logic with my iPad, wired and wireless. Just midi doesn't seem to work wireless, but I guess that's normal? Also, if I hit "play" in the OSC app, all the changes made in logic are not visible. Is this possible to always show correctly both ways?

It's the port number that you set in the TouchOSC app on the app. It's in the connections window.

Thank you for the intro into the MK2 version of TouchOSC. I have been using MK1 a lot mainly to send notes (for key switches) and CC for automation and that works fine. On the other hand templates with OSC commands seem to have serious issues. Each time I modify control assignments in Logic on a Page they initially work but when I close Logic or open another template, or even when I change a plugin, all info on the 5 pages is overwritten by the assignments on the 5 pages of the LogicPad provided with TouchOSC. Example I have modified page 5 of LogicPad to show 4 designated CC faders instead of the messy layout with too many knobs and also added latch, touch and read buttons. All work fine but then suddenly all my carefully entered new control assignments for the buttons are overwritten with the original ones and the new buttons do not work anymore. How do I avoid this. There is no way of saving an assignment set in Logic for a virtual midi controller like an iPad with TouchOSC.

Are you saving this on your tablet device or on the desktop? Are you saving as a separate file from the LogicPad?

I have made the modifications on my MBP and saved the TouchOsc file with a new name in the icloud. Then I open it on the ipad version of TouchOSC and press play. I modified page 5 of the original file and the new faders work [CC changes) but the new touch, latch, solo, mute and read buttons (OSC messages) do not as page 5 in Logic assignments shows the original page of the Logic OSC file which does not have these buttons. When I manually add them again to page 5 by copy pasting from the button assignments on page 3 and changing the 3 to 5 to reflect the OSC messages they work again but only during the session.

Hi Tim, great walkthrough! Saved me hours of fiddling about :D But I wonder, can you only use the predefined OSC commands in the LogicPad template? I tried to rename the play button and make it send a key command (Collapse/Expand All Inspector Tiles) and giving it its own command ("/1/ hideIns" ). This didn't work, but if I reprogrammed the command "/1/play" to execute the same key command it worked?

Hey, glad this helped! The short answer is yes, you can only use predefined parameters as they are named. You can change things like the pager "/1", but that's about the extent of it.

Hi Tim! thx for all of this! But yeah, I got similar problems like others. I receive messages from logic to touch. (I move a fader in logic, it moves in touch). but vis versa doesn't work. moving the fader in touch, nothing happens in logic...any solutions? thx!

Are you using the LogicPad template? Is the tablet wired or wireless? Check the connection settings for OSC and the ports.

Yes, there's an Android app. Connect via USB to your computer, that should work.

hi! great job with your video... Unfortunately, I tried many times to connect my iPad Pro M1 with Touch OSC to my Logic pro 10.7.7 running on my iMac retina 5K 2017 with MONTEREY without success. i can actually see my iPad in the controllers on Logic preferences but nothing happens when I press play on the LOGIC PAD template .. any help? thanks

Actually, when I press play on my iMac, I see the PLAY button working with a light on my iPad. It works from my iMac to my TOUCHOSC on my iPad but not in the opposite way..

If it's working from Computer > tOSC, but not the other direction, it's probably one of the following issues: message from the template isn't correct, DAW isn't accepting messages (change that in settings), outbound connection port isn't correct. My guess is check the OSC message from the template and then in Logic preferences>Controller Assignments to make sure it's all correct.

@@stardownmusic8405 You can check OSC messages in the tOSC template and make sure they are the same as in Logic preferences. It may be that the message isn't the same. It's kind of like if you were to call someone but dialed the phone number wrong by one digit, the call (or message in this example) wouldn't connect.

Have you checked the connections? Likely the messaging isn't going through from one of the devices.

I have followed your guide, Im using Touch OSC via bridge. now Im recieving changes I do on logic and it reflects in Touch osc, However, when I move the faders via tablet, logic doesnt move? I was just trying to make it run with the logic pad template, but I cant get into customizing control because im stuck to how to make the tablet control logic. Hope someone could help.

It sounds like the tablet is having issues sending messages. First thing to double check is the connections going out bound to Logic. Did you also check the MIDI settings in Apple?

@@TimCorpus Im using OSC Bridge, it works great, Logic just doesnt give feedback "back" to Touch osc, I saw read somewhere that there is a bit a problem for it being bidirectional in Logic with midi cc. but as for touch osc doing what its suppose to do, its all good, it does send the midi cc message well to logic.

Hi Tim, I have a crazy problem I almost finished my template , started from some of the logic pad template everything was cool but suddenly it stopped working, none of the buttons are working I’ve try everything ! :(

So none of the buttons are working in both directions? Are you sure the template is communicating with the computer? You could use Protokol to check the connections. I assume you also checked that none of the messages on the template and Logic were somehow accidentally reset (including send, receive, and connection ports in tOSC)

@@TimCorpus actually, let me ask you this, to check if this can even be done. I simply want to use OSC for custom creating a grid of buttons. I want those buttons to be able to send midi CC values to Logic Pro x, so that I can change "modes" in the controller assignments (in logic). I dont need faders or transport buttons or any of that. Can this be done? thanks man, I appreciate your help. I know you probably get hundreds of people not doing any legwork at all and hitting you up with a zillion questions. but I am trying, just limited on free time. cheers

@@flipnap2112 ya that's really what TouchOSC is best at. Set a bunch of buttons (they can be immediate, delayed, or toggles) then you can set up the signal (MIDI, OSC, or even local to command something within the template). You'll then sync your device with your DAW and map the messages. 👍
