hmm interesting, so my 20" dry heavy ride must be the V1. heavy hammering from the top. gotta say, I've never played a better pingy cymbal. all the videos of people playing the same model it never sounds as good as the one I've got, haha. I even bought a 21" once thinking it would be better but the ping just didn't quite click, so I sold it and stuck with the 20. Same with a 20" power ride, didnt quite have the ping. I got lucky!

Great explainer! I used to own a V2 21" Dry Heavy and ended up replacing it with a V1 21" for a great deal (thanks GC!) While I love them both, the V1 is just a much more articulate cymbal. Neither are truly "dry" in the way that most modern drummers imagine a "dry" cymbal sound. The lower fundamental and slightly more controlled overtones of the V1 strike a unique tonal balance, whereas the V2 to me always sounded very similar to a Power Ride.

Cheers for the shout Sean! Great video and info as always.I have one of the 1989 22" Dry Heavies and I'll take it to the grave. It's a beaut! Danny Carey used one on "Aenima". A great example of the 2nd generation version is Josh Freese on A Perfect Circle's "Thirteenth Step". He used a 2nd generation 21" Dry Heavy on that album.

Chad Smith used the original 22" dry heavy ride to record the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album. I'm in the process of recreating his exact set up for that album, so I'm constantly trying to find an original so I don't have to spend $650 on the Monad.

A 1st DH will run around 400, so a bit cheaper. (There's a nice Monad on reverb for $350, if you choose that route.) What other cymbals did he use on that album? I'd like to add those details to cymbal.wiki

@@seanwalton4687 From what I've read and seen in photos and on the Funky Monks documentary, 14" Zildjian K hats, 16" and 18" Paiste signature full crashes, 20" Zildjian K crash, 22" Paiste signature dry heavy ride, 20" Paiste signature heavy china, and 2 or 3 unknown splashes (Paiste and/or Zildjian I assume)

Do you think they just decided it was easier to add the colorsound coating to make it dry rather than the extra hammering? The first cymbal is easily the best

I believe they were spending too much time making ver. 1.
