2:06:37 Atif was part of the band in the beginning then he left. Later, Farhan Saeed joined as the lead singer. Jal was one of the greatest bands in South Asia. Their Album Boondh was major hit in India. The song you reacted to was also uploaded on an Indian music label. They were also featured in various Indian news channels but later Farhan Saeed also left the band to pursue a solo career and that was the end of an era. He later started acting and now he is one of the best actor in industry.

I thought I’d answer your question about why people especially women dress differently in Pakistan. You are right that sometimes it is the occasion which dictates the clothing (such as prayer time) but mostly the difference comes from the sub-culture the person is from. In Pakistan unlike in most western countries (but perhaps similar to other Muslim and eastern countries) people vary widely in their sub-culture to the point that we have different local languages and were it not for Urdu and English (our national languages) we wouldn’t be able to understand each other. But the issue of attire goes deeper because even people from the same city or living in the same area could dress quite differently. One thing which determines this is the religiosity of the family a more traditional and religious family will dress with more traditional clothes and religious attire. Even in the religious attire there are various levels for example some women will only wear a headscarf (which can show some hair) others would wear a hijab (which wouldn’t show any hair but will show their full face) but others would wear a nikaab (which would only show their eyes) and even some would wear a full burka (which would cover them from head to toe and they can only see through holes in the cloth). More westernised people would dress very western with women wearing no head scarf just a neck scarf or sometimes wearing pants and shirts etc. So all in all the person’s attire depends on a number of factors i.e. degree of religiosity, traditionality, locality (city, village, affluent newer areas, old inner city areas etc.) education, westernisation and socio-economic standing.

@wy6523

@@GON-lu4me its actually a mixture of both in varying ratios...like recently i switched to public conveyance so i started dressing up a little more modestly then I usually would...for me it meant wearing almost knee length shirts and for some others it may mean wearing a headscarf or burqa(so it does actually differ from person to person and also with the environment of a particular locality)

@@GON-lu4me it depends on the society and the culture you are in. In my family and culture you aren’t pressured. It’s not even aloud to do pressure someone into doing that in Islam. It should always be your own choice. But then again most people confuse religion and culture with each other all the time. I’m from the Caribbean and even though my great great grandparents came from todays India/Pakistan our culture is vastly different.

Edit : And yes Atif Aslam started off with Jal and he was the lead vocalist and gave initial commercial hits like "Aadat" and "Woh Lamhey" in 2003, (You must definitely check those out !!) and after his split from the band at the end of the year he featured songs he wrote in his solo album, and they got so famous in the South Asian peninsula that he was called to India to feature those songs in Bollywood movies "Aadat" in Kalyug 2005 and "Woh Lamhey" in Zeher 2005 and that's how a legend was born and the rest is history.

So glad that you included the songs that you did but I do feel like making you a list of Pakistani songs showing evolution of music through the eyes of an average person like mine. Strings are the best thing to happen to Pakistani music after Nazia/Zoheb Hassan and Vital Signs. Xulfi, Abdullah Siddiqui and talents such as Karakoram, Young Stunners are the present and future. Osts are a totally different subject - they have some awesome ones in them too but there’s no consistency in them.

both members of Strings parted ways on this day (25 march) last year, end of an era,,, I still miss them,,, too much nostalgia is associated with their songs, wish they could give us a good bye concert. And maybe you are right that drum in the strings song sounds like sampled drum or more like a produced from launch pad or something, which was pretty famous in that era specially in Indo-Pak . I really enjoy your reviews , because you both know music, and alot to learn from your conversations, thank you

We girls in Pakistan have liberty to wear what we want. At least, most of the girls (97% being Muslim majority). What I mean is that there is no restriction by govt or state to impose hijab or covering up. But some people do cover up while some don't. It's either a personal choice or depends on the area/family traditions.

I have to disagree with u. Pakistani women surely have the freedom to choose to cover their heads or not, but sadly they still dont have the freedom to wear short western clothes (sleeveless clothes, shorts etc). Its still a very conservative society for women. But i hope slowly they will accept the global cross culture like many good muslim nations did.

I guess I worded the first sentence wrongly. But still showing skin and wearing a bit "revealing" clothes is becoming more and more common specially in elite class, fashion and entertainment industries. We are very different from what we were a decade ago.

Awesome reaction :) about OST of khuda or Muhabbat ... your guess was 100% correct . The guy loved the girl and the girl was stuck in rich funeral family , that took the hope from the guy and ge went A mazaar/Muslim temple where people mostly spend time in prayers to achieve, unachieved .. it was hit serial and mega hit OSt by Boss Rahat Fateh Ali. Love your reactions . And sending love from Pakistan ..

If you even wanna watch some Pakistani drama, I will recommend watching "Mere Pass Tum Ho", its 24 episodes 40 min each and available on KZbin. Its one of the best pieces of writing and The Best Television show I have ever seen. So much so, that once i finished it watching, my heart remained restless for many more days looking for something more like it. Also, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sang the OST for that show as well.
