Happy New Year Jess! Thank you for another great episode! Elizabeth, The Queen Mother was England's granny. Yet she was regal, dignified, and truly royal. She held to the traditions of her time, thus was reluctant to change. Additionally, she was strong yet sweet and really stuck it to Hitler during the war! He called her the most dangerous woman in Europe! 👍 I bet she just loved that! When the Queen Mother died I felt like it was the end of an era for England. BTW Jess, I love your lipstick - it's very flattering on you! See you at the next episode 😊

I always thought The Queen Mother and Margaret were similar in that they were both quite selfish women. The Queen had her Father’s lovely reserved manner. The fluffy hat and smiley face hid her true self. Awful to Phillip and overstepped her position once she was no longer Queen. Poor Berty loved her so much but I don’t think she reciprocated his love. She was though a real bonus to Charles and was helpful during his young years

Glamis castle pronounced Glahms. Elizabeth R Elizabeth Regina - the reigning monarch. Strictly speaking the Dowager Queen Elizabeth was not entitled to use the style. She was a force to be reckoned with, and definitely dwelt in the era of deference. Exceptionally fond of furs, hats and ruffles, the Queen Mother was also a great fan of horse racing. She must have been a formidable mother in law, and was known to disapprove of Philip.
@Jess_Connell

Fantastic. Yes I thought the R meant reigning, so it's surprising (and off-putting to me) that she would go on using it once her husband passed away. Strange even.

@@Jess_Connell 'regina' is simply the latin word for 'queen', just like 'rex' is the latin word for 'king' (if you'd like to doublecheck, just google it!) Ever read or watched Sophocles' 'Oedipus Rex' .... there you have the term in the title: 'King Oedipus'. 'Regina' as a latin term is pronounced 'Rae-ghee-naah'.... that's unfortunately the best I can come up with, so in advance apologies to all linguists!!! 😊 Anyone using the 'R' behind her or his name better be the actual queen or king, else she or his is an impostor. Best greetings from Bavaria 🇪🇺 (at times it's nice to find out that 5 years of Latin were not a complete waste of time, since Cesar's description of his wars and crusades literally bored me dead back then. In fairness, they also bored me dead in German or French 😂)

I read some years ago, that when President Carter visited Buckingham Palace during an official visit he kissed the Queen Mother on the lips. She is reputed to have said later’ Thats the first time a man has kissed me on the mouth since the late King died’ I think she took it in her stride & smiled graciously. As a child in rural south west England we always kissed relations on the lips , wonder if President Carters family traditions were the same. The American South has a lot in common with south west of England.

It must be said that opinions vary on the Queen Mum. She was not all sugar and spice, however if she had her eye on an equerry then I doubt she also had her eye on Edward. According to letters stored at Glamis Castle, they were good friends until the Abdication. Also, the Londoners adored her, she stayed in London with her husband and could easily have moved to Windsor if she had chosen to do so. Only the King was expected to remain during the blitz. Yes, my grandparents lived through those days (although not in London). So,I speak as one who heard this from people alive at the time.

Actually Andrew has a 75 yr lease. He has recently come into a large amount of money that he has used a portion of to do renovations on Royal Lodge. He has a penchant for undesirable friends, and most recently has benefited monetarily from a Chinese spy. What will he do next?
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for that correction on the length of the lease. Crazy. He’s just getting started. Yes I have heard this about his windfall from rotten friends. I imagine there will be more… 75 years is a long time. Personally, I am wondering if King Charles is taking on this battle, because William doesn’t want to have to, and I believe they all know that King Charles this time is shorter than any of us desire for him. I don’t know if I’m off on that, but that’s been my thinking as I’ve observed the situation, that it seems like Prince Charles is taking on the battle rather aggressively, and maybe he’s just getting the battle dealt with so William won’t have to deal with it once he’s king? Thoughts?

American Texas Girl here, been following the royals since I was about 10 or so, maybe even younger, but I will admit it I am not correct. Queen Camilla does use "Regina" when signing her name. When QEII died and they were signing papers the next day it was noted and in corresponds she has signed Camilla R as her husband is the reigning sovereign. Thus making her THE queen. When QEII father died, her mother was no longer THE queen and therefor should not have signed it as with R, especially having the same first name as daughter. Simply signed it as Queen Elizabeth. I loved the first 2 season of The Crown as I found it historically more accurate (more accurate not saying it was the cold hard truth/fact -- there were some things that I know for a fact that never happened) but i found the opening of scene very funny but very useful. At one point in history, there were 3 living Queens of the British Monarchy kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zne2eIOGd5hshpI. The Crown show could go on if it looked to the past. The History of the Royal Family intersecting with the world history would make for interesting tv without have to create storylines -- the storylines already exist. Ask an Historian. I also think would help spark interest into some into learning more about history and why certain things are done, why certain countries have resentments towards each other, why protocols exist, ect..... sorry that turned into a tangent.

The Queen Mother wasn't quite the national treasure as she was portrayed. I dont know of anyone who was particularly moved when she passed, she was known as a vulgar woman, overspending and a snob. The truth was that it was outwith her control where she lived during WW2, that was up to the PM, Parliament and the King. I know the East End of London was appalled at her visiting of the bomb sites, dressed vulgar like, in furs and diamonds. Not a particularly pleasant person.

The constitutional arrangement seems to fall into 3 categories : -the republicans forever who hate the look and the inequality; -the monarchists forever; -those who don’t feel strongly either way but realize that the tourist dollars alone FAR exceed the cost of supporting the RF. @ the government is letting thousands of dangerous criminals out of prison and locking regular people up for tweets. Crime in London is out of control-people running around with machetes. There’s no investigation of grooming (r*pe) gangs; no arrests for attacks on the police; no penalty for certain groups of people who seem to run the place with impunity. Immigration is out of control-this ultimately will be the turning point. Maybe not in 10 years, but exponentially arriving. The culture is changing-voluntarily. Once all of the traditional British values are gone, it won’t take long for the constitution-and the monarchy-to be sent to the bin. I think there’s a chance that it will even be physically overrun: the military has dwindled, and they’re more concerned about DEI and pronouns than in getting back to simply guarding the country. The best ways to avoid the inevitable is to stop the small boats, stop locking people up for speech (and build more prisons for actual criminals), and implement proportional representation. I could write a thesis on the NHS, the unions, and the working-from-home civil servants who get pay rises for nothing, but don’t get me started haha. This is a simplistic list off the top of my head, but London was once the greatest city in the world, and now it’s an unrecognizable hell hole that can never reclaim itself.

The Queen Mum was a narcissist. She tried to tell Elizabeth R what to do. How to reign. Elizabeth came into her own after she died. Normal parents do not tell you how to do your job or run your marriage. The Queen Mum failed at this. I know this because I have several family members that are narcissists. The way the Queen Mum crossed boundaries reminded me of them. BTW,She was not the Monarch, her Daughter was. A narcissist mother does not trust her daughter to make her own decisions. Once she died, QEII was free of her interference.
