Wow - lots of haters??? I see that it's not available anywhere now, looks like it was a bit pricey when it was available. Looks like a nice setup - thanks for sharing your experience with it. It's just sort of something that happens with needle valves. The majority of adjustment happens immediately. They could probably put an overtravel stop in there after a couple turns.

The adjustable legs for stability in uneven terrain are a plus. Using it in the field would make a great video (not necessarily by Mr. Paleo).

Loved the review...excellent as always. Thanks, Ernie. One very big plus about this design is that the fuel is now remote, away from the heat. An added low profile windscreen could easily be made to attach to the pot stand wings' outer edge. If one were to assess his use and trim the wings to just over the size of the largest pot he would use, it would lose fractional weight and make the wind screen requirement smaller. Of course, gram weenies need not concern themselves with this. For preparedness and/or car camping, this is a winner! This well made stove has a price tag. One has to want it............

Seems like a longer set of legs is all that would be needed to run this with the big 450g fuel canisters. Maybe I will try to make some -- aluminium or carbon tubes are fairly cheap.

In Japan, this what people use to cook. It's probably very stable. Snow peak in general is expensive. You can use a wind screen unlike most canister stoves.

The last time I was first to comment, the FBI actually went after real terrorists and criminals. Anyway, Snowpeak, being a real quality builder, sometimes lacks design expertise. Their stoves always lack any built in wind protection. They will sell you one that attaches to some stoves, but is only partly effective and acts as a wide heat sink that extends boil time appreciably. The bipod design makes it very stable and functions well. Seems more like a group camp cooking thing using larger pots as the burner spreads the flame widely. Thanks for another great review, doc.

I have the 85- the 398 and the 760. They’re fantastic! I started with the 85 and was so impressed by the weight, portability and mostly the efficiency that got the 398 which is not a hobo, great to cook and as a small fire pit, loved it too and decided to purchase the 760 as well to use as a fire pit because it fits several regular size logs and left the 398 mainly for BBQ and grilling. I’ve used them in a 2-1/2 weeks camping and they performed flawlessly. The only thing I noticed was that when using the 85 with a Trangia, the alcohol stove should be a little higher to perform better, but you can fix that by adding a couple of metal tent stakes (the cheap thin round ones), threaded through the holes adding height to the alcohol stove. Of course I’m not Dr. Ernie who makes great demonstrations but hope this helps. Yes, it’d be great if he was to make a video of them.

Just bought one in the USA, as Snow Peak can't import them into the UK/Europe? at present until they have been "gas tested". Stability and that they can take a big pot is a big plus for me. Big meals or melt snow. Solo stoves are two a penny (I use an Optimus folding Crux or a Jetboil), and sure there are other less expensive bigger stove options. But these just look cool and perfect for a kettle. If anyone wanted to use the extra large gas canisters then just dig it in so level, or put the legs on something. Same goes for wind management, just use some nous, have brain use it. Medium/large gas canisters are plenty most of the time anyhow. As for the price then thats subjective. Buy once, cry once, then enjoy. Getting out in the woods is my leisure time, even when working, so what price that? Good review, thanks.

This has the characteristics of a base camp stove, in which case it should handle the 450g cartridges which are best value in cost per gram of gas. As such it's hard to see were it fits.

My first thought was that with with the larger canister, the stove sits very high off the ground. I'm thinking a windshield would be pretty big and heavy

Not truly a bipod. The canister makes it a tripod. Another heavy, fiddly stove, probably very well made, as SnowPeak products tend to be. The pluses are that a low, efficient windscreen could be easily made, which wouldn't prevent access to the control valve, and, of course, the stability. Thanks, Ernie! Oh, my first so-called "backpacking stove" was a Primus Grasshopper that used 16 oz propane canisters, with the canister being the third leg. It was very tall and heavy 😁 - circa 1975.

I have a similar stove that works with the tall PROPANE bottles. Also works with the Green Colman bottles. The bottles on an ANGLE is the 3rd leg. I have not found another one after a very exhaustive search. Anyone seen any out there??

At £151 ($205) this stove is ridiculously expensive and only a fool with too much money would buy one. It is possible to get a perfectly good tripod stove (with which you can use ANY size of canister) for a tenth of the price and it will be absolutely every bit as good quality as this stove. But then, as the old saying goes: A fool and his money are soon parted.
