It's surprising that they managed to get it as light and compact as they did. And snips are a good idea. This inspires me to take my brs-116 out on my weekly lunch hikes, together with a smaller pair of $5 snips. The electric fan burns pretty clean, and the snips would allow you to use thicker, hard, dry wood cut exactly to length. I know a spot with a fallen cedar, a good view, and a place to sit 👍👍

Thanks for your review and your Pros and Cons. I wouldn't see myself purchasing this stove, pretty much a one trick pony. Only purpose is to boil water. Won't function without power bank. If no power doesn't work, no good. Even for $20 not worth it. My Skyemac stove stove is so much more versatile. Portable fire pit as well as all the cooking it can do.

I used one last summer on the Colorado Trail. It was awesome. I used their coffee cup that fit inside it and the pot they make that fits outside of it. All three items were about a pound. They worked great in every condition and even in wet weather. I could not recommend the LOFI products more. My only complaint was that it burned TO HOT and it was hard to simmer even when the control dial was turned all the way down. It also barely used power from my power bank.

Thanks Moe, So good to read, I'm glad its working for you - even in the wet weather! That's where it seems to shine. I'm working on a redesign of the circuitboard that should allow for a lower fan speed for better low heat control. Otherwise letting thicker wood burn down to embers seems to work well. Jonny

"Biolite Campstove 2" and the "Flame Cube" are also fan assisted biomass stoves and both were released before the LoFi Stove. The "Biolite Campstove 2" and the"Flame Cube" also generate electricity which recharges the battery which powers the fan and both have a USB out. The LoFI Stove does not generate electricity but instead uses an external battery to power the fan. I also have a "Power Pot" A camp cooking pot for camp stoves, which generates electricity and if used in conjunction with the LoFi Stove, the "Power Pot" could recharge a second battery bank to power the LoFi stove, continuous power if you swap the battery banks!

Thanks Ernie, great review. I saw this on Kickstarter a year or two ago. I thought about getting one or two to replace my MSR white gas stoves for group expeditions. Essentially we need to boil about 2 gallons of water to rehydrate freeze-dried meals for the whole crew. But ultimately I think I would be very annoyed if I had to keep lifting the pot every few minutes to feed the stove with sticks. The other thing I don't like about wood burners is the soot. That just adds yet another thing to my long list of chores, which is to clean those pots regularly. So I think I'll stick with the white gas stoves for group outings, and use my alcohol cook sets on my solo trips. Interestingly I find the price very reasonable considering it comes with its own pot, and the fact that it looks like a high-quality product.

I got a lot of emails from the inventor when he was running the Kickstarter campaign. It's an impressive little stove, but I didn't go for it because it's a very niche item. It's basically a Biolite stove shrunk to about 1/4 the size and weight. I don't go backpacking anymore, so I'm OK with the Biolite being bigger. (Also, those clippers are nice, but they absolutely don't fit into any definition of "ultralight." They probably weigh more than the stove! 🙂)

I think as far as an interesting and cool invention it gets good marks. But I believe it's a solution looking for a problem. As an ultra lightweight backpacker you're probably either going to carry a folding twig stove, a solid or gel fuel stove, or something a little bit heavier overall but much quicker like an isobutane setup. As much as I like the idea of this thing I don't believe that cost plus the added complexity of feeding the stove while it's on, is really the right combination. And I wouldn't want something else to be draining my emergency power bank chosing to save it for phone, GPS/sattelite coms, etc. And this is coming from somebody that both loves stoves and titanium products.

Hey Ernie, Thanks so much for putting this video together and taking the time to make a review, it's so good to see others using and enjoying the LOFI stove. I thought I'd answer a few comments (thanks everyone) that I've seen people asking bellow: - The LOFI cookpot is a 820ml pot, it's a slightly taller version of a standard 750ml pot. - I'm working on a new USB-C cable that will power the stove from a phone. Taking approx 1-2% battery to boil 1L water. - The stove runs really well on wood pellets ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6PTZ2qfltxpo9k ). - I've powered the stove of a small solar panel and it worked great ( kzbin.infoDwqD8hyQzKk ). - The ember guard also works really well as a wind shield in bad weather. - LOFI ratchet snips weigh in at 129grams and cut through 1" dry wood. - I pronounce it "Low-fye", but go with whatever you like. Some people are really enjoying it, and others are finding it too expensive for what it offers them. I get that, and that's ok :) I'm really enjoying design and making them, and am constantly looking into new ideas to explore and have fun with. The forced air design is really suitable for people in wet climates, where fuel is damp / poor quality. In warm dry climates, I think a standard fire-boxes work well, but over here in the UK we get really seasonal/wet weather and there isn't always super dry fuel when out hiking. I enjoy lifting the pot and adding a few twigs, i don't see a problem here, where as others seem to insist that it needs a hole at the side. However, because the burn chamber is pressurised with the fan it isn't possible to have an opening at the side for feeding fuel - the embers and flames would be pushed out, and the stove would loose a lot of its efficiency. I hope this helps, Jonny

My Only detractor is Not having a Pot stand to allow better Ventilation,,,, If the could design a pot stand,, like the bush buddy or solo stove; that would Really Enhance it’s performance,,, The price doesn’t deter me,,, it’s unique and as long as it’s equally durable,,,, I am fine,, I honestly think that this type blend of bushcraft and technology will be Very attractive to the Younger Generation of Outdoor Enthusiasts,,,,👍👍 Great Video,,,,

Great review of a really interesting design. I always love creative engineering. That said, I wouldn’t personally recommend this to most people. The benefit of adding electronics to an already efficient gasifier stove doesn’t outweigh the additional complexity and points of failure. The main issue is the constant possibility of loosing your power source during a burn. Since there’s no easy way to extinguish the fire, then it will likely lead to damage, thus loosing your stove in the field. From a weight perspective, this design either adds additional weight to a gasifier wood stove with the fan and external battery, or swaps the weight of liquid fuel/canister with the fan + battery. So there is no weight advantage. For price point, this is significantly more expensive than every wood or liquid fuel stove on the market, except maybe the top end JetBoil and specialized MSRs, which are designed for extreme conditions or maximum convenience. So yeah. Neat design and fun product. But really can’t justify it as a viable superior solution to any other stove it’s trying to compete with.

I have been using this stove since beginning this year (four months?). I like it a lot, but beware: it needs power a bank, but they do not work well when freezing. Burning wood pallets, these are dirty fuel, they will leave a nasty residue on the pot. Better to use branches, so take a pruning tool to cut ca 4 cm sticks.

I have been using this stove for awhile and really like it. It’s nice to know that small twigs are always available on trail and I carry a battery bank anyway. The stove can also be run on a small solar panel. The creator has made the fan replaceable which is very nice because when I first bought the stove I burned charcoal and turned the fan off too soon which burned out the electronics. I sent the stove back for repair and learned that the fan just snaps out for replacement. I keep an extra fan in my pack just in case, but so far, now that I know how to use the stove properly, I don’t need it. Excellent customer service is a big plus too.

Good demonstration, thanks for the video. The best part of it are the pruning shears, if you ask me. You definitely will need them since that thing runs through wood like nothing. Else ... fanned stoves are ages old and come in all sizes from very small up to huge gas bottle size, home made ones same as commercial ones. Some have the fan inside, some separate the blower from the stove unit, youtube is full of fantastique variations of a principle used by blacksmiths since literally thousands of years: blow extra air into your fire. And since ages nobody really wants them, except said blacksmiths, of course. There are many reasons for not wanting them. For example, check this piece: as you have to lift every minute or so the pot and feed the fire, you have no constant heat under your pot, and that's also why it doesn't really work fast, it took you same or longer time as with usual stoves. Second problem is, that you have to permanently feed that thing with air to prevent the electronics from burning, means you can never really simmer with such a stove. Yes it is impressive to create a flame good enough for welding, but who needs that whiles cooking ... And finally, what means ultralight if the stove and the mug are titanium or whatnot, but you have to carry a heavy powerbank with you only for getting your water hot? Yes, you might say we carry already a powerbank with us for our mobile and cam and electric video drone and what not, that is true - but now you might need additional capacity for running that thing, too. At the end of the day you run into the bushes with a bluetti or so ... And the price is really ... astonishing. Wondering how many people will have so much of loose money laying around. The pros are that you have a wonderful new piece of gear, a hopefully long lasting pruning shears tool, and that you can create a huge fire for a couple of seconds before you have to stack new wood inside the tube. So, yeah, another kickstarter product which I will never purchase. About new stoves in general, I would really like to see a new stove for cooking. Means a stove which gives you a high flame as well as the ability for simmering, and which is small but allows you to use a pan or a wider pot and not just a mug. To me it seems, the market is flooded since years with products which have only one goal in mind: boiling water as fast as possible. That might also be the main purpose of the purchasers using such stoves, means going outdoors and then boiling water as fast as possible since they need it to brew a coffee or rehydrate any dehydrated ready meals. Then you end up with a device which creates incredible loud noise in the peaceful nature or needs electricity when you are off grid, and you are happy that you could maybe save a minute or two whiles boiling water on your outdoor adventure ... what a nonsense. But I guess there are also still a lot of people wanting to cook. We want to fry and boil and simmer and so on, as done since half an eternity, as humans cook meals outdoors since more than 700.000 years. Cooking outdoors is part of the outdoor existence, and it is not about how fast one can cook a cup of water but how good one can use the equipment for cooking. Means preparing bacon and scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, biryiani, stews, currys, name it ... without burning everything into charred bio coals. And stoves which can help us with that purpose and are not only meant to be outdoor water heaters, are highly welcomed.
@Badger77722
@Badger77722 6 ай бұрын
This stove might be neat, but it's way too expensive for me to even consider purchasing one! Two concerns I would have would be the small size of the fuel needed - yes, it comes with snips, which is another piece of weight and gear to remember, and breaking things to the correct size by hand might be a pain (having to break something multiple times because you misjudged it's size the first time) - and how fast it would go through that fuel if you crank the fan output up. I noticed even in the boil test that Ernie took the water off for a few seconds to add more fuel to the fire towards the beginning of the test. I don't know if he had to add any more fuel to get the boil completed, but moving whatever you're trying to heat up on and off the heat source is rather inefficient.

You mention how light it is but It doesn't work with out a battery pack, so the weight of the battery pack should be included as well, no power pack no cooking! 1 x 18650 battery weighs 45g each approx. A 10000mAh power bank will have 4 x 18650 batteries which will weight 180g approx and then there is the battery bank housing another 100g to 150g. So the LoFi Stove weighs 260 g + 180g for 4 x 18650 batteries +100g for the power bank case, which comes to 540g when all is said and done. Not as light as it may first seem. Still a great stove though!

As you pointed out, $200 for a camp stove is cost prohibitive. Then, it being reliant on a battery for the fan to keep from damaging the electronics makes it a pass for me. For that price, the battery pack should come with it and it should be big enough to power the fan for a week on the trail. Otherwise, all the weight you save is lost with having to carry batteries. It also appeared to take 6 minutes to boil 750ml of water, which I can do with a penny stove.

Not ultralight…. Can’t use it without the battery bank and you’re not including the extra weight. Standard stick stoves can be fed without removing the cup , and can also double as a small fire for warmth. Plus only costs $30 and you don’t need to carry pruning shears

Carry this 5oz stove and your battery pack. Or Carry the same pot, stove and isobutane canister. You still have to carry similar or more weight. Myself, I carry a battery pack to charge my phone or Garmin Instinct anyway.

Also you're not allowed with isobutane on a plane and it is hard to find (sometimes impossible) those canisters at destination.

I like the concept of this stove but not the price. It reminds me of “the base camp” stove that was marketed a few years ago. The difference between them, aside from size and weight, is this one requires a power source while the base camp stove uses heat to produce electricity to run the forced air.

I harbor concerns that this design might be copied or imitated by manufacturers in China. However, my past experiences with inexpensive knockoffs have taught me a valuable lesson-I won’t make that mistake again. As an individual who experiments with stove designs, I can appreciate the ingenuity and elegance behind this creation. It’s worth every penny to me. In fact, I’m getting one for each member of my family.

I hate to burst your bubble. But Forced Air stoves like this one. Have been around in one form or another, since the 80's. I was a Assistant Scoutmaster back in the early 80's, and one of the fathers of a Scout made one. His ran on two AA batteries in an external holder. It had a speed controller for the fan, and it was very loud, and burned through wood, pretty quick. Now it was bigger then this one, but that was 40 some odd years ago. P.S. I looked up Forced Air Wood Stoves for Camping, on KZbin, and the oldest video I saw was from 15 years ago. So this idea has been around for some time now. Just saying, its nothing new.

Interesting. 'Electronics / Fans / Power Banks / Cables .. and of course, the price. No thanks. Too much to go wrong. I prefer KISS. Also, the boil time (for those who place emphasis on that) did not look to be impressive enough to justify purchasing it .. 'boil time' means not much to me, especially with gas burners.

Nothing but problems with electronics in my experience. I go into the outdoors to reduce my dependence on electronics, and batteries especially, which are about as far from eco friendly as you can get with the current technology. Also, changing the name of wood to "biomass' doesn't make it less polluting.

@drytool and grows locally on trees? Or is converted from crude oil and packed in steel then transported to warehouses and stores by diesel truck? This isn't rocket surgery. On the spot pollution is arguably in favour of contained gas, but the natural world is a global system, whether we choose to understand that or not.
