"Blobular" is my favourite word that a paleontologist ever said about an extinct animal.

I saw some artwork the other day where they replaced the T. rex in the first film with a triceratops to illustrate the potential. I think that is an enormous opportunity for any future paleo media that they can portray the herbivorous dinosaurs as the danger over the predators. Because as far as I know, irl herbivores are generally more dangerous to people than predators, because predators are cautious and choose their fights, where large herbivores can be very aggressive since that keeps them defended. Like the most dangerous animals in Africa are hippos, buffalo, and rhinos. Which makes me think in a Jurassic park style environment, the biggest threats to a human would probably animals like triceratops, stegosaurus, ankylosaurus, iguanodon, and potentially large hadrosaurs. Maybe sauropods but while I think it’s cool when they’re shown acting defensive, to me it makes more sense that they’d be gentle giants given how little they have to feel threatened by. Triceratops plays a much bigger role in the QuickTime video game sequel to Jurassic park, where it’s much more aggressive and fights off the T-rex. Imo triceratops, stegosaurus, and ankylosaurus have the potential of being some of the most dangerous land herbivores that ever lived

Turns out Triceratops isn’t alone as a Ceratopsid without fenestrae in its frill, Avaceratops also lacks them. Which is odd because they basically couldn’t be less related to each other being a derived chasmosaurine vs a basal centrosaurine. I’m kinda excited for Huayangosaurus, the real animal had bizarre proportions mostly not seen in game (short neck, really robust forelimbs, and a bulb at the end of its tail). Scott Hartman has a pretty good skeletal of the animal.

Any predators in Avaceratops’ niche that may require the “pucker effect”? Lol

I know it’s been several months, but I’m just now seeing this comment and I thought I’d chime in. As far as I’m aware, there’s an ongoing debate about whether or not the type and only unambiguous specimen of Avaceratops is an adult or a juvenile. It’s possible that the fenestrae in the frill wouldn’t develop until later in life, like most sexual display structures, since the frill and horns of Avaceratops are pretty small in general, and may not be reflective of the true size of the frill in a fully grown animal.

My biggest gripe, with most if not all Jurassic franchise games, will be how they disrespect big herbivores, armored herbivores, and the hadrosaurs. Like, look Spino and Giga fans: An Edmontosaurus has killed more T rexes than both any Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus known in existence. Deal with that information.

Great video as per usual. Also, fantastic to see Prehistoric Park getting a mention, since it is easily my favourite piece of dinosaur media. Such an incredibly innovative concept with so much potential, such a shame it was just the one season.

Something that may be worth looking into is Lee Rex at the Tate Museum, it has a possible Triceratops or similar inflected pathology on the femur. I got to see the specimen while it was being prepped but i don't recall if the pathology was uncovered at that time.

My thoughts are that the jp triceratops is ether c or b tier, jw is pretty definitively d. The jp triceratops is just more elegant in it's design, it has less wrinkles and less of a blobular look about it with some neat back scales. It looks kind of streamline. The jw triceratops however, is the exact opposite being the wrinkliest blob of all the blobs. I would even say the sub-speciation on the designs alters the rank as the exaggerations in stubbiness of the jw's triceratops snout adds to it's weak design for what should be formidable and majestic looking animal. At the end of the day though, I would still say both of these design do still look pretty bad. Even when coloration is ignored, when we compare the model of the model of these two triceratops to that of the ones from prehistoric kingdom the differences are very noticeable. Btw, great video guys! I might be a bit late to commenting here, but I've really been enjoying the content on this channel for the last few months.

I’m kinda watching all your videos out of order, so I don’t know if y’all say it in another ceratopsian video, but I’m surpised there wasn’t any mention of the cheeks? I’m not opposed to ceratopsian cheeks but I feel like this franchise goes way overboard with them, and in Triceratops specifically it looks like the beak is trying to escape this horrid mass of flesh. It’s like a squid beak. It looks so uncanny, especially when compared to Prehistoric Kingdom’s model.

Every time you guys mention Hell Creek, it made me think of the game Saurian. I really hope Saurian gets back on track soon, and they make the T-Rex, Edmontosaurus, and Pachy playable Dinosaurs soon (currently only Dakotaraptor and Triceratops Prorsus are playable). But I’d like to hear you guys’ take on an opinion I have about Saurian. Currently, the only playable environment they have is Hell Creek. While that is perfect for a Cretaceous locale, I really think it also needs a Jurassic environment and a Triassic environment as well. If they did that, I think the Morrison Formation would be the best Jurassic environment, and maybe Ghost Ranch for the Triassic environment. What do you guys think? If you have suggestions that might be better for either period, I’d love to hear them.

While I enjoy the theory that they’d huddle up in a circle with their horns outward I do also like the fact that that theory came about really early in their discovery around the same time that naturalists were exploring western America more and going on safari in Africa and witnessing similar defensive formations from both elephants and bison. Like yeah it makes complete sense for these animals to have also behaved that way I just like how the first fossils were found in around the same era that biologists were beginning to study things like behavior in the other species and so out of that we get one of the first behavioral theories based on extant species.

So I guess triceratops was like the American buffalo before the british arrived in America, they were just all over the place, T-rex probably couldn't take a step without tripping over a triceratops Also loved the video, looking forward to the next one, I had never heard of huayangosaurus until I played the game but I think they are pretty neat, it looks like the thagomizers took over their whole body

I feel, just like with the Raptors, you should've separated the 1993 and 2015 variants. I find the 2015 Triceratops to be sick-looking, and overall just not a great design, while 1993 has cool patterning, it looks more lively and detailed. But hey, who am I to judge? The discussion about the legs and how they may or may not have been more bent outwards more reptilian ....I think of the weight of that head and if the tail was shorter it was not used for balance, so those front legs would have to bear the weight, hence, a more straight leg like this would be able to handle weight and head thrusting in battle rather then legs that are not supporting the obvious central core weight....Im an artist not a science major by any means...lol...I just look at weight distribution and try to understand what looks realistic....pillars are straight for weight!!...unless there is a counter weighted tail to balance the head like t rex.....oh the rex, reason I fell inlove with dinosaurs.
