@@Captn_Slow - I think if you're watching the series for the first time, 13 is a super fascinating character. She provides a contrast and sense of duality for personal and social perceptions of disability and disease. By the time she admits and confirms her Huntington's diagnosis, she provides viewers with a seemingly renewed sense of positivity and resiliency in and toward the concept of 'life' as well as toward the concept and act of 'living', predicated on the idea of "make the most of the time you have left" - sentiments that House so vividly and purposefully lacks. That said, re-watching the series for the second or third time, 13's lackluster personality/depth in her understanding of humanity, life and its meaning -- or meaninglessness, perhaps? 13's elusive and aloof personality is easily mesmerizing for first-time viewers; but for repeat viewers, her withdrawn and seemingly private personality becomes difficult to empathize with, even for viewers who previously connected with her (by way of the audience knowing more about her than the other characters in the show). 13's refusal to connect with others - including when she is dating Foreman or even in her reaction to Kutner's death - her lack of emotional depth connecting her to the rest of humankind in the show and with repeat viewers, transforms her into a heedlessly self-serving person.

The disability thing actually added a good complexity to the story. The show displayed the disabled as the most dominant charachter throughout the entire show theme. In terms of critical review it disagrees with our ideological perception of disability and disabled people. and I think that is one of the factors that made this character stand out, it teases our minds and thoughts of what is familiar and what is not in each minute in each episode. Which makes it really ingaging for the viewer. In my opinion this story is the absolute best story EVER. I am a huge fan of that show. And I will only wish if it would return and evolve again. This writer has a really rare talent. The actors were really in harmony. This was a really great peace of art. best of wishes to the best team ever all the way from K.S.A.

I have also seen a lot more disabled people be outdoorsy and getting stronger the ones that are capable, and able to do things outside the house. It's not everywhere, but I have seen more do self therapy and heal. The older we get it can still be tough at times. "House" was/is great T.V.

Giving the character of House a disability which inflicted him pain gave the character licence to behave far beyond normal social sensibilities, which also allowed the audience forgive him. That coupled with an extraordinary intelligence in medicine also allowed the audience to outweigh his inner Machiavelli with the benefits of his medical expertise.

When house got clean and started dating Cutty(sp?) I thought it would have made for an interesting story if she had gotten pregnant naturally with him and then watch to see if his persona changed with a child. I don’t know I just think turning him into the ultimate bad guy that drove into her house, goes to prison then survives a fire was all bad for his character. He ultimately wants to so,be each puzzle and do right by people so by making him crash into her house was in bad taste for his character. What I would like to see is the character come back somewhere in South America or Brazil or somewhere isolated, now that Wilson is dead and a chance encounter by an old team member or something. I think the story needs more. It ended on a sour note.

@Tracymmo actually being trully 'healthy' requires you to have all parts of your body complete and in working order (for instance, I lost a part of my finger when I was young, so could not be considered entirely healthy). Also, I disagree that achieving success would necessarily stop him feeling unaffected by his physical status.

i never thought about house hiding from patients because of his disability, i think that it is 100% wrong and its her looking for meaning in everything.
@sarasamaletdin45745 жыл бұрын
She is one of the producers. So that is how the character was originally envisioned and if you look season 1, expecially the first episodes you can see a lot to support that. The character might have evolved but it doesn’t mean she is looking a meaning that isn’t there, it’s the other way around.
@vaish7504 Жыл бұрын
In the first episode, the patient literally says that to him that he hides from patients because he hates the way people look at him. It's sad but his injury was a big reason why he increasingly became more and more cynical and depressed. He lost Stacy just after that things only went downhill ever since.

Schorr's entire motivation to write a story that consistently made religious people look like nuts and constantly lauded science as ones Higher Power was to get his mommy's approval after his (twins) brothers had the unmitigated gall to join the ranks of those who embrace their roots and help others to do the same on top of that!

For being producers or writers on a medical show, these people sure mess up their terminology. Having a disability and being unhealthy are hardly the same thing. And the "shame" issue they describe is silly. What accomplished doctor would have that kind of hang up? And these are the same people who probably never consider casting actors with disabilities, or who only include disabilities in scripts to demonstrate a character's weakness or their saintly strength. Really clueless.
@kimmiewise10442 жыл бұрын
Well it’s deeply philosophical, isn’t it? What we consider as a society as unhealthy. Clearly you never watched the show if you think constantly throwing down narcotic painkillers, destroying your own liver in the process and constantly injecting yourself with all kinds of concoctions of drugs to prove a point is healthy behavior. That’s not even mentioning all of the unsafe sex with prostitutes on a consistent basis. House is unhealthy and he isn’t afraid to admit to that. But he also realizes that trying to expose his patients unhealthy behaviors such as unsafe sex, cheating, lying, drug habits, emotional turmoil…All of it is hypocritical at the end of the day. That’s the shame. His leg is a proxy for that because if you also every watched the show (because you clearly haven’t) the reason his leg is disabled in the first place is extremely emotionally charged and a complex situation where he tried his hardest to be better and tough it out but was made to take a treatment plan that would leave him in constant pain thanks to his ex-wife. His leg is constantly a reference to his emotional distress and he takes pills and solve cases to run from that pain. This isn’t uncommon is drug addicts. And I live in Eastern Kentucky, so I think I can speak with some authority that a lot of drug addicts get addicted and loose all sense of ‘health’ when it comes to themselves. They also like to escape, looking for reasons as to why they are addicted and justifying it. House does all of this. It’s all consistent with drug abuse. The leg is the incitement of the drug abuse and is an emotional distress indicator. Which can happen in chronic pain patients. Also a lot of Doctors have issues with their past medical history. Therapist are often post therapy patients themselves but talk about their own stints in the mental health ward and watch how quickly they change to subject from themselves to the system in general. On top of considering the general populations attitude towards the disabled in general. I mean, those discrimination laws didn’t come about because people just love the disabled oh so much. And I guess hate crimes against the disabled don’t exist in your world either…No, this show recognizes that being disabled IS A DISABILITY. It’s a challenge. Not some nice vacation with a 5-star breakfast bar and rides with unicorns. It’s not pretty and the show recognizes how the disabled can be treated BADLY. That’s reality for a lot of disabled people and recognizing and portraying someone who gets their own back against the stares and abuse is cathartic in the least. It also shows that there is another much darker path that the disabled can take. Now a days you see all kinds of success stories, whole TV series are about disabled people going on to live their best lives and find happiness while advocating on behalf of their disability to the world. Turning the other cheek and putting on a brave strong face that smiles at the venom filled worlds of those that hate them. But how many of these people stop turning the other cheek. How many simply don’t care what others think anymore. How many just say “fuck it” and focus entirely on themselves and theirs. That’s a reality that House portrays and it’s a real problem that millions of disabled people face in real life to this very day. As for casting decisions, Hugh Laurie as an abled-bodied actor had to work 16 hours every day for weeks with no time off just to make House MD alone. That’s at least 12 on his feet working on rehearsals, shot compositions, going from set to set, meeting to meeting with producers, script writers and personal managers. Not considering public appearances like on Ellen, this venue and the Globes meaning intensive travel and short prep times. Very, VERY few disabilities can handle that much stress, especially over the 10 years the series aired. And that’s not considering the more likelihood of sudden emergencies, the likelihood of reshoots and the kinds of accommodations necessary. Additionally, House as a character was not the main character originally, nor was he disabled originally. That came later in the writing process. As mentioned in the interview he was also just as likely to have a nasty scar which means a disabled actor wasn’t their intent when getting Laurie. Also if we’re going to complain about able-bodied actors taking “disabled roles” do I get to complain about disabled actors pretending to be able for roles? Can I crap on Cameron Boyce because none of his characters has epilepsy when he had epilepsy? Or are we just mad that a decision late in the writing process was made to make a character disabled and instead of trying to cast the homeless guy wandering around the lot with a limp they hired…An.Actor. This show explores a whole lot of nuance both when it comes to health and disability and does so respectfully for the struggles disabled people do go through and some of the things that do happen like becoming addicted to painkillers , being thought of as incapable, and the temptation to be the villain people thing you are. If you find that to be a mistake then it seems like you are the one that’s mistaken here.
