This is part 2 of 2 videos showing how I built my shed / workshop using free pallets and other free lumber.
If you watched my video on building the foundation, I did buy all that material because you have to have a good foundation that won't rot away.
For the building itself, the items I bought were screws, nails, T1-11 siding for the doors, some roof shingles (got some from a friend), drip edge, gutter, hinges, door latches and locks, 2 roof rafters, the 2x4's for the top and bottom plates and obviously the gas to go get a lot of pallets.
Let me know your comments and hit that "Like" button if you think this turned out okay. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how I should have done things?
Thank you,
Steve

Everyone, like me, loves this workshop. Who would not? Are you going to insulate the interior and finish the inside walls with more pallet wood? You install the boards vertically. What ever you do, my friend, you have one hell of a workshop! Congrats! Thanxz

Thanks for the kind comments. I don't plan to insulate at this time. I have a kerosene heater in there but haven't used it yet because once I start working and have the doors shut it's not too bad in there. I have 2 sides covered with peg board and plan to put more of that up soon. Take care...

Steve and people like Steve on youtube are so wonderful! Generous and smart. This is one of the best how-tos I've come across. As methodical and clear as the images and instructions simply stated. No annoying music or distracting voice. How I wish they were all like this! and the finished product is an absolute dream. I'm a 120-pound seventy-three year old woman and I think with a little help I can do this! Many thanks!

you're welcome@@steveshome! will send pics when done...won't get back to the land until June now. We had to lug my pallets down 40 foot of steep mountainside to get them to the land, so I agree it's not easy...they were soaking wet and made of oak....some of them 2 metres long...I shudder when I remember that day. Now they are dried out and tarped waiting for our return. I'm looking forward to it. Must be crazy.

@@steveshome So amazed you remembered! Yes I did..... We hauled about 100 heavy wet oak pallets down a mountainside....I still have nightmares...and got to work. I now have a beautiful pallet cabin with a covered deck the same size as the cabin, finished in board and batten siding. I Yakisugi-ed (lol) the siding before fixing. Then I put a corrugated metal roof on it. The inside is finished with pine tongue and groove, and painted with lime paint that I made myself. I'm a sustainable building enthusiast...everything repurposed and no harmful chemicals. I had a lot of help, but did it mainly on my own. I'm a woman...only mentioning that because a lot of women don't realise they can do this. Why let the boys have all the fun?!!! I should mention I spent months in a tent through hurricanes and blazing heat, snakes, wild boars, falling trees...you name it...and had so much FUN! Now I'm in the cabin, and I feel like Cleopatra! I learnt and owe so much to KZbin geniuses...including yourself. Thanks for sharing your skill and process. Hope you and yours are keeping safe and well.

I put Olympic Wood Protector Waterproofing Stain in a color called Cedar Naturaltone on it. I picked it up from a store we have in this area called Ollies. They purchase merch from stores going out of business or getting rid of stuff and it is usually marked down to a reasonable price. I say it is lasting the 4 years that it says it should last on fences and I plan to put another coat on it next year since I didn't do it this year. Since I did not use paint, I need to keep up with it, but I didn't use paint because I was afraid of peeling. Thanks for the nice comments, I appreciate them.

Nice building job! The only concern in this building I disagree with is the horizontal siding. I understand the pallets weren’t Long enough to do vertically. But with no baton between all the butt up cracks it’s going to set the stage for water getn between the cracks & wood rot to very easily set in. I understand you putting the tar paper on before the siding to keep water from rotting your whole wall out & keeping air & bugs & rodents out. But Maybe later you can find you a old country sawmill around that will sell you some 3/4”x8”x12’ cheap & you can re-side it in vertical board & baton the cracks & never have to worry about siding rot. Or otherwise you need to silicone caulk every seem on that building. But I totally understand it was working with what you had in the pallets & their short length that drove you to making the siding horizontally. It’s still a nice build but you sure got a lot of caulking to do, rain & moisture will find its way in all those vertical cracks & set up mold & rotting. But still a nice build 👍

Nice job! I need to make a workshop like this here in England but planning regs you can't go above 2.4m high so I understand, so thats a bit limiting as is the fact that council have just built houses behind my house with no warning permanently cutting off my rear access! So I'm screwed and ever pallet would need to go through the house! So I'd need to get them like 2 or 3 at a time with my car and walk them through the house! (and them dismantle etc) real pain in my @rse!! might not even be worth doing it now.. I Badly need a workshop but skint/unable to work now, so pallets is my only option.. this looks great! I have some patio doors and double glazed window panes I can use also, so Im not sure what to do I need it to come out looking good/tidy or it'll be a waste of time I want it to add value to the house aswell if I sell/be useable as a man cave or bar outside garden Room, so cannot have it look rubbish and detract being it's not a big garden.. Anyhow great project! Looks good! Cheers from London England 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Thanks for the comment. It's still holding up very well, just need a new coat of stain on it to protect the wood. Sounds like you have some obstacles ahead of you and that is terrible that they cut off your access to the back yard, but once you get it done you will have a place to work. Sounds like you don't have much choice. Try to get pallets that are the same size so it goes together easier. I was lucky and got all mine from one store. Good luck and take care.

Hi,Great job! I'm soon to start on a similar build using two way stringer pallets like you. I'd planned to have the stringers horizontal, screwed to the top and bottom plates and tying them together with 3x2 across the stringer in the middle and to whereas yours are vertical. As someone who has actually built with them can you see any pros or cons for either way.
@steveshome
@steveshome 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Huck. I do see a lot of people build with the stringers horizontally but in my opinion that is not as structurally sound since the wood is not as thick. I thought the stringers should act the same way a stud in a wall does. I thought about doing it the other way, but since I was going pretty high with my walls, I was afraid of all the weight sitting on the walls. Hope this helps you make a decision. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@steveshome Thanks, I think you are right, I've looked a lots of pallet shed videos and yours is by far the most detailed and useful so I will go with your method. I need to buy new treated timber to join the pallets. I assume you toenailed the stringer and 2x4 to the baseplate. I will have to use long screws as I don't have a framing nailer .

Awesome build. How do you find all those pallets that are exactly the same size with the cross boards in exactly the same location? How many pallets did you have to accumulate and compare to get what you needed? Every pallet I’ve ever brought home was never the same as the next one. Any advice would be appreciated.
@steveshome
@steveshome 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely feel your pain. That was one of my main concerns starting out because I didn't want to deal with uneven walls and trying to make everything fit. I found a paint supplier close to where I live, about 25 be miles away, and they had people getting pallets from them. So I started getting them there. I liked it because every once in a while I would get new pallets that where the same type. I was going there so much that I got to know the guy. The bad thing for him was that people were hand picking the ones they liked and left the bad ones. I told him if he called me when he had 15-20 pallets I would take them all so he didn't have crap lying around. I did that for months before I had around 100 pallets that were all the same type, as you see in my video. The problem with that is I have a lot of bad pallets now, but I cut them up and use them for campfire wood. Anyway thanks for the comment.

Thank you! Inside is mostly just Peg Board attached right to the pallet stringers. Before I attached it though, I took off the deck boards. If you look at some of my other videos you can see the inside of it. I got lucky on the Peg Board. A local store went out of business and were giving it away. I just wish they had the hooks to go with it. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any more questions.

When building the walls did you put 2x4s in between the first and second rows like you did the third... whats the best advice when building the wall to ensure structural integrity
@steveshome
@steveshome 5 жыл бұрын
I think your talking about the 1:38 part of the video. I didn't use 2x4's like I did for the top because I have the tall vertical 2x4's and I wanted those to go from bottom of wall to top of "first floor". Basically like typical wall construction on a home. I did however nail a piece of wood on the bottom and top of the pallet and then nailed them together once they were stacked on top of each other as shown at that 1:38 time frame. Hope this answers your question, but if not, ask away. Thanks for the comment!

Yes you answered my question. This is the best pallet build video out there. My other question is how far apart do the furing strips have to be? Are they necessary or can i put the wood on without it. Thank you again and God bless.
@steveshome
@steveshome 5 жыл бұрын
With using the pallet wood as siding I didn't use any specific distance on the furring strips, I just wanted to have 3 on each piece of wood. You don't need them but my thought was if water does get behind the siding it won't just sit between the wood but maybe drain down and also dry out so it doesn't rot.

I don't really like to give advice on these kinds of things because I am just a diy-er. I would be sure to use an exterior rated paint or stain to seal the wood on the outside. I built a playhouse for my daughter too, it's posted in 1001 Pallets, but I didn't run any electric. Good thing I guess, she grew out of it pretty quick.

Not that I know of. I always look after a rain, and where I am at, it's been a rainy year. I think the biggest help is the roof overhang. One tip though, make sure your pallet boards are the same thickness so your walls come it flat. Have fun and thanks for the comment.
