Let me show you how to make a great cutting board out of cheap abundant pallet wood.
These are an easy project that are a lot of fun.
*pallet wood should be used only for decorations unless you exactly where it came from.

Nice result. Subscribed. I think KZbin (or google) is reading my mind because I was just thinking about making cutting boards out of old pallets while I was laying in bed before I went to sleep last night and today I see this video on my feed.

Hey Derek good tutorial on the prep and construction of a cutting board however I would definitely caution against the use of pallet wood when it comes to cutting boards or anything that will come in contact with food. Reason being is that one does not know the history of this wood. Were there drums of toxic chemicals stored on top in liquid form that possibly leaked and seeped into the wood/chemical powders that could get ground into the pores of the wood. So forth and so on. Infinitely better choices for this build and a huge number of projects that one could easily utilize pallet wood for

Very valid point. I inspected the wood and I did not see any chemical staying but that doesn’t mean it’s not there I also removed quite a bit of the surface before building the piece and then I sealed it but I totally get your point. I think I’ll state that it should only be used for decoration thanks for reminding me of this problem

oh brother. You forgot to tell him to wear two masks, a suit of chainmail and take iodine pills for safety as well. Shoot, that dust from the sanding probably gave him covid too.

@@mymorristribe no, Michael is completely correct with his concerns regarding the safety (or lack there of ) of using the wrong type of wood for a cutting board. Not only what he says is true, you only want to use (specific) hardwoods that have a very tight grain for projects like this that are intended to be used for food preparation and consumption. This is because using a wood with a more open grain pattern exposes the wood to bacterial growth that could form from the moisture that seeps into the pores from food oils and juices, and from washing and rinsing the board. Moisture getting inside the wood is terrible and will eventually cause it to rot and/or grow moldy - not something you want your food to be in close proximity to... But from your dumb comment, it seems that you already have first hand knowledge regarding the consumption of mold spores haha. Naw jk, that’s kind of mean... But you should be nicer as well, particularly when you don’t know enough about a topic to be breaking anyone’s balls about it. On a more positive note, I think Derek’s response was excellent. I commend you for approaching the comment with an open mind and being so receptive to some (very important) constructive criticism. I really enjoyed how you were able to repurpose that material into an otherwise beautiful work of art. Your tip about using the glue + activator to fill in the cracks and blemishes was a good one 👍🏼. Also, to touch on Michael’s concern and how you felt that because you sealed it, it would protect the food from contamination... I don’t think the butcher’s block conditioner and/or oil would be a good enough sealant to put my mind at ease here. That stuff breaks down and gets worn out over time, requiring you to reapply every month or two depending on use. I would feel a little safer using something like expoxy resin to obtain a solid seal. I’d recommend further research, but I’ve even read that finishes like polyurethane and similar products, even though they aren’t considered food grade, are all perfectly safe to use in, on, and around food as long as the finish is completely cured. Anyways, just some food for thought. Great job, I enjoyed the video!

@@jasonquinn7391 Well, having grown up in Mexico eating amazing foods off of less sanitary board tables and food prep spaces that this butcher block, I'd say to each his own I guess. It really depends on one's own personal level of fear. As for me, I'd eat off that butcher block all day long. But yeah, in a world where even a 0.1% chance of sickness scares a person, I'd recommend your solution.

If the pallet has the ears of corn symbol, printed on it, means that the wood has been smoked against parasites and can travel all over the world. Strongly not reccomended for food use!
