7:00 We also chose cedar fence boards for the inside walls of our sauna! very economical. we did not plane the ones for the walls, they seemed good enough for us. I wish we had routered in a tongue and groove before stacking them up, but we were impatient to get going. There are small places where the boards waver at bit and we see the insulation behind, but meh... its a sauna with little lighting so we can pretend we don't see the gaps :D

@@WineberryHill i think i need a project of my own to work on as i keep thinking about yours. 😄 could you resaw the fence boards for twice the number? that would help your budget and with that plywood exterior giving stability you dont need the interior siding to provide it. the thinner boards might be more prone to cupping but tongue and groove would help prevent that.
@WineberryHill Жыл бұрын
Maybe. I like how you think! The hardest part of that for me, would be milling them. It's a bit much for a table saw...but I do have access to a sawmill...hmmm

Saunas here in Sweden are typically just built of pure wood. No insulation or moisture barrier. Mine has a very thin wooden roof with roofing felt on top. The walls are about 2 inch thick and its basically a small wooden cabin with a stove inside. Works great even in -20 C. Your design is probably a lot more efficient though, but I'm wondering if it's not gonna get too hot too quickly? Oh and my floor is just wooden floor boards with some gaps in them, that's where the fresh air enters while the hot leave in vents on the stove pipe itself.

Hey thanks for the information...very useful as I move into the next phase.

What kind of wood does the typically Swedish sauna use?
@jewdd19898 ай бұрын
I wonder, because you say there’s no insulation, water proofing, etc. except felt on the roof and it’s built purely of wood with the floor being traditional wood planks with gaps if it works because it ventilates some yet is open and aired out enough after use that moisture isn’t such a big concern for wood rot and mold? Perhaps healthier in the long term too?

We used cedar fence pickets for our sauna. Ours were very dry but they still shrank. We did line with plywood first then mounted the pickets to the plywood so if you did see through the gaps you would still see wood. If I was going to do it again I would have ship lapped (over lapped like shingles) them.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up!

@@WineberryHillalso we did not bother planing our boards. They are not as splintery as they appear. Ours went any way…I drug a piece across my bare cheek (on my face..lol) to prove it to my wife. I do not believe they need to be planed but they are not exactly uniform in thickness either. I love your videos and your green house is amazing!!

That's good to know. So maybe I should just plain the benches. (...and thanks!)

You could use concrete wall board or I think it’s backer board that you use for tile for your firebox might be cheaper.

Previous post was a test, sorry. Great Job. The prefab models are outrageously expensive. Unlike a lot of pallet projects. This one will be hard to tell it was made from pallets.

I like the build. I'd be worried a little about heating up the VOCs from the plastic moisture barrier and OSB while sitting in an enclosed space
@WineberryHill9 ай бұрын
This would be a concern for any sauna (or any building really). It's been the plan all along to install a sauna specific vapor barrier and a cedar interior. The exterior of the structure doesn't interact through that barrier. Be sure to watch the latest update: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maS3poeXqLp2b9E

Super project Can pallet wood be used for the interior? Thinking of all the treatment in the wood and the high temps they will be exposed to. THanks, and looking forward to seeing more of this
@WineberryHill10 ай бұрын
Funny you should ask! TODAY, I drove to upstate NY to pick up the cedar for the interior. While I think the pine from pallets would "sorta" work. It just wont last as long as cedar will.
@pembroke979211 ай бұрын
The obvious answer for the interior would be more pallet wood. Especially if you can source some of the pine ones you talk about in your finding video. Planed down they would be good and may even retain some of the pine smell to add to the experience.
@WineberryHill11 ай бұрын
The one catch to that (in my mind) is all of the nail holes that will be present in the wood. I suspect these would encourage mold growth.

Amazing project and chanel! I discovered it just last week. Exactly my cuppa tea all the things you are doing :) One question about the pallets you are using (if you have time to answer): What kind of wood is it? Around here all we seem to get is pina pallets. be well and good luck with the build!
@WineberryHill Жыл бұрын
Around here it's about 60/40, pine/oak. Oak is great for areas that need more rigidity/strength. Pine I use all around, often for shingles. That said, If the pallet is in good shape (regardless of species) I will often use it as I need it.

This is a neat, practical little sauna well worth the grand to make it happen! I don’t know if you’ve looked but online I know you can find tiny or small wood burning stoves for small spaces that work pretty well too
@stephmoor2352 Жыл бұрын
i'm not sure a sauna needs insulation?? the space is so small? the woodstove should over-heat the space? with the two moisture barriers to sone degree heat should stay in long enough for the hour max that you're going to be in there? otherwise cheapest insulation i know of is light straw clay
