After 50 years without a proper haircut, our date palm gets properly trimmed! It was so epic, it had to have an epic soundtrack.
Shot with an old webcam I had laying around using MS Timershot. 5 second intervals, 30 fps, 6 hours condensed to 4 minutes. Sorry for the fuzziness, the little webcam did the best it could outdoors on a bright but cloudy day. Wish I had a GoPro! Update: I got a GroPro! Guess I'll have to wait another 50 years.
Disclaimer: I do not own the copyright for 'The Circle of Life' song. It is wholly owned by Walt Disney, Elton John, and other people more gifted than me. I just love this tune.

yes I think i would, I'm a Californian so I've grown up around them, it's pretty cool knowing I have this old guy in the yard, a definite landmark in the neighborhood. date palms can get a bad rap cause they drop frond-bombs if unkempt. but if trimmed properly (arborists recommend a cleanup every 5 years to raise the bell and remove dead fronds), they're actually very low maintenance and cause less root obstruction compared to other annuals.

They did an excellent job. Glad you valued it enough to have it done.

i got quotes anywhere from $800 unlicensed to $2500 licensed arbor work.take into account the tree is not street accessible (ie no crane) so it took a team of 4 guys to manually scale, trim and clean. ended up finding said licensed arborist company and paid $1300 approx 1 year ago, a great deal amongst bay area pricing. it's a really messy job, make sure you clear your yard before they work.

While ours is appprox 50 ft., our arborist said they can get over 75ft since they just keep growing. Ours was probably planted when the house was built in the 50's, so it'll be interesting to see how tall it gets~

Fantastic job, and a very uplifting soundtrack. How were you tied in at the top, and moving around. It looks like you had spikes and a flipline. Also, it almost looked like you were painting the trunk of the tree at some point towards the end of the video - I could not tell if that was just trunk dust, or some kind of a paint or seal. I am always looking to learn more.

I have a palm just like this one. How much did it cost to trim this one?

hello everyone and good morning....kristal i appreciate your aesthetic, however this video demonstrates not only the EXACT WRONG WAY TO TRIM A PALM TREE, but also how likely TO KILL IT EVENTUALLY......first, the 'boots', where the frond connects to the trunk, are there for many reasons; most importantly they channel nutrients from the frond to the tree itself; second they prevent the tree from getting dehydrated; third the protect the top part of the tree, the apical meristem, that is actually growing; palm trees keep the boots on until they fall off for a reason.......basically, this tree will dry out now and the crown of this tree, which can weigh up to 1000lbs now has a weaker base, ie the trimmed down trunk, can break off and smash the house.......green fronds should NEVER be trimmed; they funnel plant nutrients to the tree, that's how it 'eats'......and palm trees are 'monocots', they can't grow new bark ever; so if you spikes to climb up the thing, it wounds the tree, those wounds never heal, and the tree can get infected.......so, i agree it does look cool to trim the tree this way, but it's completely irresponsible, AND makes the tree more dangerous to everything around it......let's all get smarter about everything.

OMG! This is ALL correct. I watched this and felt sick! They may just as well played some music with the Grim Reaper in it! Is the poor palm still alive? Has it killed yet?

zachary harrison so basically do no maintenance...yeah no. Then you have have a big problem when it gets to windy. It will cause property damage when beaches fall off or hit someone.
