@JoeRingo118 That's why I think that the Clone Wars horrible as they were needed to happen in order to toughen up the galaxy, get people to realize that no matter which side wins or what happens after that they need a strong military to defend against internal and external threats and to discredit total pacifism so when something like the Yuuzhan Vong invasion happens, the galaxy will take the threat seriously and actually go full throttle in fighting them from the start. Problem is, the Republic became the Empire as a result of the Clone Wars and because of its extreme militarism, total pacifism being widespread after it was defeated which nearly destroyed the galaxy in Legends and led to the rise of the First Order and its massive gains in Disney canon. You need to have balance between total pacifism and total militarism to have a stable and healthy society basically.

I mean, honestly, the worst thing the Emperor did was allow Tarkin to run things. Sometimes it is easy to place faith in old comrades and friends and not be able to see their incompetence. Think about it, Palpatine didn't order the destruction of Scarif, or Alderaan, Tarkin did. We never see the emperor order those attacks, nor does Tarkin say the Emperor was even aware of his plans to destroy Alderaan. And given the extremely short time-frame between the destruction of Alderaan and Yavin 4, there probably wasn't even time for the Emperor to curb Tarkin's blood-lust. I can only imagine that replacing someone as high up as Tarkin, even with supreme power, takes considerable time and effort and isn't undertaken lightly. If anything, the Emperor's problem was that he had too much faith in people.

Wm C Actually, he did allow Tarkin to destroy a planet, just not Alderaan, and to Palpatine's suspicion, galaxy-wide backlash was seen and the rebellion grew tremendously.
@nithingr4359
@nithingr4359 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know, maybe I'm just something of a Tarkin fan boy - but this kind of action was clearly marked out in the Tarkin Doctrine as imperial policy. We also know that the emperor directly ordered a number of similar planetary decimations, in at least one case to the moderate shock of Tarkin. On top of that we saw that in the Tarkin novel the decimation of an entire planet was something that the empire could successfully cover up. And even after that we know that the Emperor could be a bit of a micro-manager - wiretapping entire divisions of the imperial government and then making the fact widely known, just to keep them on their toes. So, it would be quite extraordinary for this kind of action to occur outside of the Emperors awareness. So, if we look at Alderaan from Tarkin's perspective, what do we find? This action would bring fear to a whole new sector within the empire. We know that both Tarkin and the Emperor saw the core as weak and bloated - in short, the core was corrupted and only fear would bring it into line. So, what kind of risk is there that late Grand Moff could have foreseen and, did he take reasonable action to minimise it? In short - was Alderaan his fault? If we look at the steps that the rebellion and their allies took to destroy the first Death Star, it is quite remarkable that they even succeeded. If Luke had not been trained to sense the force, if the rebels had not escaped the Death Star, if Vader had not struck Obi Wan down, if the rebels had not escaped Mos Eisley , if those *where* the droids they were looking for, if they had shot down that escape pod - and that's just in a New Hope - if any of those had gone the other way, or any of the other near misses that the rebels relied on had failed, then Alderaan would likely have not been destroyed at all. But some other core world would have - and whatever world was destroyed, it would have likely gone quite smoothly. Perhaps there would have been some push back, but fear is a potent tool. So, was there anything that Tarkin could have done differently. Yes - act more swiftly. We know that Tarkin had already perceived the fundamental flaw in the battle stations design process, the lack of reliable oversight. But because of the internal squabbling and corruption still present in the imperial hegemony, this request was repeatedly ignored, and - when Tarkin was finally given that oversight - it was already too late. A fatal flaw was already baked into the design and the best he could do was try and prevent the rebels from getting their hands on the plans. And even then, if it weren't for the aim of one country fly-boy from Tatooine he still would have succeeded in whipping the rebellion out and securing peace and prosperity. To conclude, if we want to point the blame at any one person for the failure of the first Death Star there seems to be three principle options. Either; Mas Amedda (who placed his own power politics over the security of the Empire, and distrusted Tarkin as a rising power), Darth Vader (Who failed in his primary mission to control or whip out any remaining force sensitives), or the Emperor himself (for over-estimating the scope of his ability and underestimating the time he had to intact his final plan).

Nithingr okay, maybe palpatine didn’t know what Tarkin wanted to make with a giant planet destroying weapon. But, eh, what do you think he wanted to do once it was used to destroy a planet, and he still ordered another one ? Also, he forced a father and his son to try and kill one another, reinstated slave labor, he made a plan to destroy entire worlds was he to die, ordered to kill children that were already being harmed by the Jedi, etc.

@nithingr4359 5 жыл бұрын
@@nathanjora7627 I think we are agreeing with each other. . . I'm not sure. . . I think we are anyway. Just in case, I'll summarise. 1. Accepting the premise of the video that Imperial policies where necessary in the long run (If massively morally objectionable!) Grand Moff Tarkin was a highly effective proponent of that policy. 2. Regardless of the morality, the destruction of a planet - in real terms - had already been achieved by the Empire prior to the Death Star project, and that this had been ignored or accepted by the Galaxy at wide. 3. If we are looking for a candidate to blame for the failure of the Death Star project, then the Emperor makes a pretty good match. We see that point verified when the Death Star that he directly oversees fails even more spectacularly. In essence my conceit is that Tarkin was a better military leader than the Emperor. The Emperor was - on the other hand - a far better politician. Now as far as my personal opinion is concerned, of course the Empire is in the wrong. But the looming presence of the Yuuzhan Vong in legends makes the whole story more morally complex, and forces you to answer questions like - How evil can the lesser of two evils be before you refuse to support it?
@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 5 жыл бұрын
Nithingr I replied to the wrong person, sorry >< But military and politically wise, both Tarkin and the Emperor were incompetent. I mean, the Emperor is very good at machinations and Tarkin is probably really good at winning battles, or even war, I’m not saying the contrary, and yes, Palpatine, at the height of its power, would’ve been much more capable than the Old Republic to deal with the Yuuzan Vong. But. But the Emperor neglected economic growth too much. You don’t need to ruin your economy in order to create an efficient military industrial complex. What’s worse is that the products of said complex was utterly inefficient when looking at the amount of resources put in it and the products delivered. Tie fighters ? Really ? To make things worst again, Palpatine fostered conflicts and rebellions, not even speaking about THE Rebellion. Keeping the Senate, alleviating tensions between humans and aliens (even though humans are far superior to the filthy xen... I mean, to the dirty aliens) in order to both pacify the Empire and having a larger recruitment pool for your military and industry, officially recreating a force user order to both diminish the probability of rogue Jedis and siths, potentially luring Old jedis into revealing themselves, using all the available manpower at peak efficiency, and of course appealing to jedi sympathizer in order, yet again, to reduce tensions and promote social cohesion, as well as increasing his legitimacy and decreasing furthermore that of the Jedi without needing intensive divisive propaganda, all of these policies would’ve make for a stronger, wealthier, more peaceful Empire far more likely of resisting the Vong. Using more droids into the army would’ve also be a really good idea. As for tarkin, his regime of discipline is woefully inefficient, we know that, both from in universe sources and real world data. A chief that inspires almost only fear, and reigns through terror, is a chief bound to make ennemies of his soldiers, and strengthen the enemy’s resolve. A more coolheaded m’offre would’ve been far superior. The best would’ve probably been to ask for a tribute of young people from the nobility or the equalivalent thereof, and give them the same kind of training as clone commanders. Also, trying to put as many force sensitive highly trained people in position of power (trained or not in the ways of the force) would’ve been a really good idea since they are naturally more charismatic and more able to foresee the unraveling of events. And I’m not speaking about jedis here, or sith, I’m really just speaking about force sensitive people in general. Finally, not wasting resources on things like the Death Star, even if you want it’s cannon, would’ve been a big plus.

One of my favorite lines from Darth Sidious is when he sees his face after fighting Mace Windu in the ROTS novel. "...I'm going to miss Palpatine. I think." It's him recognising that 'Palpatine' became nothing but a mask to wear in public. A suit of skin no longer his own. His truth is and always will be, Darth Sidious. It's also him deciding that Palpatine is no longer needed. He won. As for the Death Star, well, it was a nuclear deterrent as well as mobile fortress world built to break any ideas of rebellion and insure stability for his Empire. It was meant to be overkill, to win any future wars before they could even begin. Being able to take out Vong World ships was just a pleasant bonus. Now, the DarkTrooper project and some of the other aspects, I could see as being prepared especially for the Vong. Like an imperial prototype of the YVH droids Lando builds during the war.

I already think Disney has ruined Thrawn in the Rebels TV series, as Thrawn was never truly a villain nor evil in Legends material, despite Disney making him out to be one in Rebels. If Disney ruins The Yuuzong Vong in any way, shape, or form like they did with the Star Wars franchise already as a whole, I'll nuke Disneyland myself. Ever since Disney bought Star Wars, the franchise has gone to shit - especially when it wasn't really intended for kids like it's being marketed and portrayed for now. Disney needs to burn...

@@silentwitness5957 Actually the Grysk could be a even bigger threat than the Vong. But I don't see how Disney has ruined Thrawn, obviously Thrawn wasn't as good in Rebels as he was in Legends but the Canon books about him is good, it is Timothy Zahn that has written them and he is the one that created Thrawn So I think that Disney could have made the Vong similar as in Legends but that depends on the one making the story
@silentwitness5957
@silentwitness5957 5 жыл бұрын
@Clash Gamer Of course Timothy Zahn does portray Thrawn better than Rebels does. After all. It is the Creator who knows his creation best above anyone else. Especially Disney, who only looks to cash grab on him as a cash cow. But when it comes to the Yuuzong Vong, there is no species in both the known and unknown regions that is a worse threat than them. Simply because the Vong came from "outside" both the known and unknown region's Galaxy altogether. They are a threat from a whole other Galaxy entirely that is far more advanced and ruthless than any Star Wars galaxy faction in existence. Their purely organic based technology as well as their religious extremist and military based society were their unique key attributes along side the fact that they came from an entirely different galaxy that they had consumed and destroyed is what sets them apart from all that are within the Star Wars galaxy. Other than the most powerful being in the Star Wars Universe that is pretty much a Goddess in Legends material who was once human herself at one point, there is no other greater threat to the Star Wars galaxy than the Yuuzong Vong. Infant think anything can top that at all other than Star Wars Force Gods and/or Goddesses themselves. I cannot remember her name. "Abiloth?" maybe? I don't know, but she was literally unstoppable in Legends material. Not even Luke could stop her. She came I want to say "after" the Yuuzong Vong were somehow unrealistically defeated by the Galactic Alliance or some shit like that after The New Republic fell before it. The Yuuzong Vong should've won the war in Legends material for control over the Star Wars galaxy. Yet they lost due to plot armor. Thrawn would've found a reasonable and realistic way to defeat them if he had survived his assassination, but not without suffering heavy casualties and losses due to the Yuuzong Vong being a threat never faced before and being so advanced as it was as a race and species. The Vong should've easily wiped the Star Wars galaxy clean since it was able to literally destroy their own home galaxy beforehand. No. Whatever they have going on now in the new Thrawn novels with this new alien race sounds like a mere local unknown region native race and species to the Star Wars galaxy. As long as they don't call them the Yuuzong Vong and start copying and pasting legends material into their own canon for them, then I won't nuke Disneyland. Disney will never accurately and honestly portray the real Yuuzong Vong. They certainly haven't done so with the Star Wars franchise in general at all what so ever, so there should be no reason why they would with the Vong. Fuck Disney and its cash grabbing bullshit.

All jokes aside it's revealed in the Darth Plagueis book which isn't a in-universe novel or anything, it's an unbiased objective story that states outright Palpatine killed his family and his master and shows how he did it. IIRC we are still waiting for Darth Plagueis to get re-canonised, though. I really hope it does, seeing as it violates no current canon I'm aware of and it actually *fixed* a lot of canonical issues like midichlorians. Arguably Palpatine being implied to be a child of the Force might but IMHO that actually makes lore even deeper and makes the twist of Anakin being probably artificial make more sense. Tangent aside though, it's worth noting that Palpatine's family weren't the best people if I remember it right and Darth Plagueis' intent was pretty much to sit on his immortal arse and expect Palpatine to do all the work running the galaxy from that point onwards, so it's not like he kicked puppies.

A series about Palpatine and his proper background would actually be super interesting as a show. Explaining all the things from his point of view. In the end Jedi are just religious fanatics, Rebels are just Terrorists blowing up military outposts and they could just join the empire but because they decline people die. With a much bigger threat looming around in the outer space Palpatine could indeed be completely justified in his approach, as War for survival is never a clean and peaceful thing anyway, its whoever can overpower the enemy. And most importantly, the victor writes the history.

The clones and droids were so that he could have the war and not have any notable generals or heroes come out if it to challenge his political station or for an organized rebellion against his second phase plan: the Empire. With the Separatist leadership vilified through their crimes during the the war and assassinated, none of the rim planets had the leadership to oppose him. With the Jedi as the command structure of the Clone Army being Order 66'ed , he removes the only real physical threat to him, gets to blame the war and any war crimes on the Jedi, and gets some sweet Sith revenge as a bonus. The clones had rapid aging, and limited rights, so there was no risk from them rising up. Using droids for the "evil" enemy ensured that no one would stand for such an army to be produced again any time soon, ensuring that heavily industrialized planets wouldn't try to replicate what the Separatist had done. The military industrial complex that he would need to build the Imperial fleet and the Death Star were created during the war and contracts were awarded very carefully. He even made sure that should he fall, the Empire had a backup plan with the 1st Order going into hiding, but to still have connections and contracts within the industry. An industry that would have had their sweet cash flow cut off when the New Republic turned pacifist. (every time they do this, a force shows up and annihilates their system defense forces. A central government needs to provide for the common defense or you will get conquered) Of course they would sell weapons and develop new ones for the 1st Order. They don't want to go bankrupt, financially at least. The Last Jedi pointed out that the only people that benefit from widespread war are the arms merchants. They are needed for defense, but need to be watched and punished when they sell weapons outside of your territory.

Indeed. His plan is brilliant. Evil yes, but brilliant. Palpatine (quite correctly) fights against corruption. He has his own personal interest to defeat the Jedi too. He sets up the CIS which has noble aims (though is also being used by vested interests of their own) to combat corruption and mismanagement. He amasses emergency powers (that speech in Episode 2). He disperses the Jedi and weakens them. Unlike them, he utilises the political system. For the good of the galaxy, he did indeed streamline the system. But regarding stopping him, the only way was the way Windu tried (and was about to succeed, though Palpatine managed to manipulate Anakin into betraying the Jedi). Palpatine has control over the Senate, the Courts, and the only entity capable of removing him are the Jedi Order whose Generals command the Army. By branding them as Enemies of the Republic, he has them removed through lethal force. No Jedi to oppose him anymore. The CIS, perhaps the only military capable of resisting him, are also dispatched with, with their entire leadership wiped out. The Army is now directly under his command and conveniently composed up of beings who obey orders without question, totally loyal to the Republic. Palpatine outranks the Jedi, the Troopers have no qualms about following orders, and obey. He now has total control. As for the future, I want to see George Lucas' actual sequels, not the weird non story of TFA/TLJ etc. From the sounds of it, we had the Imperial Remnant remaining on Coruscant, a battle for legitimacy given the heir to the Empire, Lord Vader was gone. The way the Jedi/Alliance could have "done a Palpatine," would have been for Luke to join them. Be proclaimed as third in line to the Throne, and then for Vader to carry out his plan, and remove the overconfident Emperor. For him to either succeed the throne, or nominate Luke to succeed him. Luke as Emperor reforms the Empire into what the Jedi want it to be. Or hands over to his sister Leia, an honourable person to ensure the Galactic Government runs smoothly and never falls to the corruption of the Old Republic. The new Emperor/Empress would command the Imperial Army and can choose if he, or she chooses to, hand back powers as they sought fit to the Imperial Senate, or if they wanted to, transform the Empire into a new Republic. If Windu had succeeded/Anakin not betrayed him, then a Jedi led Junta would have been interesting. I.e. the Jedi stage the coup, they succeed and they the Jedi Council directly runs galactic affairs using the Army which they command, circumventing the Senate. Imagine little Yoda standing in the middle of the Senate saying, "In the name of the Force, Go!" and Windu declaring over the Holonet, "Today we celebrate Jedi Day, on the birth of the First Jedi Republic!"

We are not aware of true scale of conflict. In The New Hope, Imperial officers mention Rebelion to be good equipped (all X-wings are capable of hyperspace jump, while TIE fighters are not), and being serious threat. Destruction of Alderaan could have the same effect as destroying Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear bombs. And nobody calls USA evil for doing that, or having several thousands nuclear warheads in their arsenal (which is comparable with having several thousands Death Stars - even whole fleet in TROS is nothing in comparison with nuclear capabilities of USA and Russia, because it cannot destroy every planet in galaxy within few hours several times, like nuclear arsenal of USA could with every big city on Earth). Its really that simple and clearly explained in novels and the films

When we refuse the concepts of right and wrong, and concentrate on results, Palpatine was a failure, since he lost. That still makes him comparable to evil. Afterall, if ends justify the means, all he did was cause trouble, and his means are not justified. He never saved the galaxy.

Nathan Jora, Disney just has no clue about how lightsabers work. A lightsaber is a beam of superheated plasma that is contained by a megnetic field. They can burn through durasteel and slice through almost every known substance with ease. Finn should have been filleted and burned to a crisp by Ren's lightsaber when he took damn near the full brunt of it, not simply cut and put into a comatose state.

I'd have had the Vong as the tools used by Plageuis for galactic conquest. He is using them too, in that he will wipe them out when he gains control over the hidden Force Crystals of the Whills granting the user omnipotence over creation and immortality. The crystals, discovered by the Jedi of old, are central to the Force plot (as with the defeat of Plageuis and the dark side once and for all). The war is the backdrop to the political drama of reuniting the galaxy from a fractured chaotic place after the Empire was needlessly destroyed by the Alliance and no government in its place. The Vong are the army/tool used to combat both the criminal gangs (used by Plagueis to justify using his Vong Army and later betrayed), the Alliance and the Imperials. Could have been one hell of a plot. I would have personally though modified the look of the Vong which looks too Borg like. Make them more like the Arbiters from the Halo series. That would look pretty cool against Stormtroopers/Rebels. And the head Vong Arbiter is second only to Plageuis and his Jedi Hunters, led by let's say Darth Talon and the converted Solo child (who is converted on the argument of the need to reassert Order on the galaxy, and not just randomly).

Dark Jedi Knight honestly Voongs really felt... out of place, to me. They seem like on author was far too much of a fan of Wh40k and though « hey, wouldn’t that be cool if we had like... tyrannids with brain ? » I know here is more to them, but still. What would really be cool is to have some Sith alchemy finally introduced in the cinematic SW, with some cool concepts like Sith homunculus that could give a nice pay off to the tale of Dark Plagueis the wise, apart from potentially Anakin, and the other « sides » of the Force. I mean, in the EU there were tones of non aligned force users, wether dark or light (or in between), but I was thinking of orders such as the knights of zakel, who used the Force as a power to enforce justice, a weapon, and who didn’t evolve any concept of spirituality or philosophy linked to it, either light or dark. And if you really want to introduce the Voong, why not do that after or during a robot rebellion, that would be nice. But the most important things we should’ve been shown are the reconstruction of the Republic (military campaigns to fight non aligned coalitions and, separately, imperial revivalists, plots organized by the nostalgics of the Empire in the core worlds) and of the Jedi order. It’s really shameful they didn’t do that.

@CommanderOfPain6116
@CommanderOfPain6116 5 жыл бұрын
It’s so dangerous because of how different their technology works. They have basically mini black hole generators on their fighters instead of shields. So any missiles, or lasers fired at them would do no damage. Their fighters fired homing molten rock that would eat right through. The x wings shields and destroy them quite quickly. Their ground warriors were on par with Jedi in hand to hand/lightsaber on staff, combat. The staffs they used were also an organic snake that was lightsaber resistant. It also was alive so it could bite and inject venom into its opponents if it got close enough during the sparring. The living armor they wore also was lightsaber and blaster resistant aside from a weak area in the armpit area. On top of all of that, they also were a “empty spot” in the force. So the Jedi could not use the force as effectively to predict what the enemy was going to do next. Even more so, the yuuzanh vong embraces pain, so they would not stop fight until they were completely dead. Their world ships were gigantic, bigger then SSDs I believe, and Han Solo is even quoted in the books saying he wished they had a Death Star right about now. The world ships could also use the black hole generators on them to literally suck the shields off of ships, and capital ships, leaving them completely exposed and easily destroyed. If they wanted to, and this is why Chewbacca died in the series, they could put a Dovin Basel(black hole generator) on the surface of a planet, and pull the moon in to hit the planet, and their fore destroying the world and everyone there. Sooooo. That’s why their technology was so dangerous.

@@CommanderOfPain6116 That really isn't what i'm trying to say I think that yuuzhan vong technology is to advanced for being organic. How tf are amphistaffs lightsaber proof unless they have a very high concentration of cortosis to the point where their bodies are basically cortosis. Also how do dovin basals create mini blackholes it makes zero sense. Vong tech makes no sense and the only way for organic technology to make sense is if it is handeled very carefully.

If Palpatine knew about the Vong and was trying to fight them, why not tell people they were coming? It would give the galaxy a common enemy and discredit the nascent Rebellion for weakening the galactic resolve. Sounds more like bad writing in an attempt to make the morality of Star Wars seem more complex.

People tend to see an overlord as wanting to be the leader of empire for pleasure,, but as we can see from the rapid degredation of palpatines health, its not a party. However no-one else is able to make the decisions that palpatine is, and the growing organization would descend into anarchy. Palpatine was working his whole life to bring about a new era of advancement which would make easy a bunch of solutions to simple lifes problems that his generation would otherwise see as impossible. Imagine if we could afford more incredible technology for everyone?? What would our lives be like?? What if you were given a step back from society, and the opportunity to see what would really happen if we really did all work together, could you then go back to a normal life of seeing the life-saving solution, knowing it could be available, but shrugging and watching the world around you wallow in waste?
