As said in the video, I am currently researching and working on an upcoming video on topics like hunger and late-game mining pals that I need more time on, so that's why this video is here for a quick update. Subscribe for the next video, found something that I think is extremely interesting that I haven't yet seen anyone talk about and we'll get to the bottom of exactly why Digtoise is so bad as an auto ore miner!

@@UnknownZom There isn't from my testing. You ought to use pals with the highest mining level efficiency. Food levels are a factor though, but that's what I'll be talking about in an upcoming video!

@@TubeTAG honestly I'm all for niches and pal-specific quirks. I just don't think it's designed to be this way. Digtoise would still stand out even if he was only slightly worse than other Pals.

I feel like that might be the not-good-enough way that the developers are telling us he's intended for use in the party. It should be more explicit though. I do think the degree by which he is worse is too much. However, he is much easier to get when compared to Anubis or Reptyro. I think him being on par with the other 2 mining pals would be about right assuming that this niche is intentional.

If they intend Digtoise to work that way I think they should make it part of his description both in the paldeck and on his pal equipment slot. For instance they could add to his pal equipment "Digtoise is a great miner, but only when instructed on how to do so. When Digtoise is your active pal digtoise headband helps you command digtoise to unlock their hidden potential".

@@xXBrettXxxXBoyXx Yeah, on the stone pit it utilizes it's full work speed. I think it's a problem with the way it mines ore, all those little ticks of dmg prob get rounded down so it isn't as productive as it should be.

Food consumption might be based on the number of strikes. It would account for the 5x appetite.

He is big "slow" replite like crocodiles they could survive long time without eating. I mean crocs could be fast and agresive but most time they are passive. Same couldbe with him

Yep that’s what i was thinking all those attacks add up to more food consumption . He needs to have his own hunger ratio per hit separate from other pals other wise he’s always gonna eat a lot more.

I remember having a camp full of digtoise, struggling to feed them all, and barely getting any ore. after watching your video I replaced all of the Digs with Anubises. Now that same camp not only produces large amounts of ore, but setting it up to feed those turtles has resulted in such a ridiculous overflow of omelettes that I am making a pretty decent profit selling a few hundred every couple of days. @@rwulf In my coal/iron mining base, half of my work force is composed by Reptyros and half Dumuds. They produce A LOT. But I honestly never check how much they are eating, because I leave a tomato plantation there and they never get hungry.

They only did a quickfix, but not completely fixed it yet. They can now finish off the coal nodes in the desert part where you find them where they can't previously. I think they should add the bonus damage vs ores for the base assignment ones and make each time they spin counts as 1 attack instead of each time they hit in term of food consumption.

I said it in the comments for the other video but I think it still holds true here as well. Because the item is an in inventory item they probably don't currently have a work around in the system to apply that system wide. In fact server play becomes a question at that point as they would need to decide how that works in regards to the item and global play. I suspect they're going to have to expand the systems more before a proper fix is in place.

One question, I saw you have a column for observed. I recently unlocked a second base, and I decided to use this second base for farming ores exclusively. I found a really nice place near the boss Chillet and made a very modest base there, just for the sake of farming. However, whenever I'm not in the farming base and I return via fast travel, I see the pals like, frozen without doing anything, then after like 2 or 3 seconds they start to move and work. When I check my ore supplies I see they haven't farmed anything. My question is... Is this normal? Do I need to stay in the base for them to work? I thought I could go and explore the world while the pals were working. I am using Digtoise so maybe that's the issue, but I also don't see any increase in berries for that particular base. I started to notice this as soon as I was able to have 2 bases.

How it works when you distance your self from the base is it becomes unloaded, which they will work at a slower rate then if you were near, but they should still mine rocks or work, it might be just digtoise is a bugged miner. The main problem when the base is unloaded is the any stuff they harvest or mine falls to the ground as dropped items but because it's unloaded the drops are not loaded till you come near again which makes pals who transport the items impossible to transport them due to the drops being unloaded. So you will show up with piles of drops where rocks use to be or where food was harvested then they wills start moving the drops to chest.

There is another thing that is probably bugged and it has to do with Pals feeding when not observed. I have 3 bases, 2 of them are mining bases and 1 is the main for everything else. In my mining bases I have the exact same 10 pals but as far as mining, I have 5 tombats in each. I always notice that one base tends to get 0 ore very often where the other gets usually around 140. Sometimes it's reversed which one produces, sometimes the yield is as low as 90 but almost every time, 1 base produce lothing to maybe 4 ore where the other produces 90 to 140. But here is the interesting thing I found out. When I TP to the base, all pals are around the feedbox and after a couple moments to load in, they all start feeding and then go to work. My guess is, pals are getting stuck when unobserved and do not feeding even though they are next to the food basket and since they are stuck there wanting to feed and not doing anything despite there being plenty food, they don't go back to work hence they yield nothing. This only happen when unobserved, they don't get stuck when observed.

Im not sure if they updated it again but he only does 28 dmg a hit when in your party. All my digtoise out of the party and in the base were doing 1 dmg a hit

By the way, I have tested anubis with 10 work speed and 200 work speed and it doesn't seem to affect mining speed on natural nodes(normal on mining site). damage also doesn't seem to have any affect as well. is this a bug too?

My mining camps run on all Astegons, the Asteroid Dragon starts at level 4 mining and jumps to level 5 at 4*.

i love how you explain everything, and i agree with you on all parts except the headband. i think since it is a key item it should only work while he is on your party deployed. it would be nice if they did give pals an "equipment" slot when interacting with them with the "4" key. that way we could let him hold their own key item and gain its benefits when at base, like lifmunk using its submachine gun when being raided while you're away etc.

Hey, I'm glad you're covering this topic. I'm absolutely loving this game, and am trying to figure out ways to improve resources gathering, both active and passive. However it seems relevant to suggest you look into Wumpo as well. I could be wrong, but they seem to also be bugged when it comes to cutting down trees. Put two on a base, where they have no other task. But no matter how many times they hit the tree it doesn't seem to generate any wood or break. But throwing Menasting out for a few seconds immediately started actually destroying the tree, despite having a lower lumber level and doing half the damage per hit. Maybe I'm wrong, but figure it might be something you find worth looking into. (Edit: It actually appears it might be a bug preventing all base Pals from chopping down actual trees, maybe you can solve it.)

I was recently testing out somethings with digtoise and i actually learned that his attack speed is linked to work speed. A slacker musclehead almost moved in slow motion, compared to an artisan work slave.

Btw for everyone who wants to farm some stuff manually... I found Rushoar to be really good for it. He does like 1.2k dmg to stone and stuff if you do the rush while riding him. And best thing is the skill practical doesn't have any cooldown.

If they were to bring Digtoise in line with its peers, they would not want to apply the headband all the time, as that would increase the damage by 35, they would want to make it hit for 3 each tic, bringing the ore count to roughly 96 ore per day.

Your other video helped me out so much, digtoise being the mining pal was so ingrained into my mind that i used him in my mining base alot, and i'd get like 100-200 coal- 100-200 copper ore like dayys after i checked back and im like "man getting these mats is so slow i should just mine this shit myself" well while i was waiting on ore i made a breeding base and was breeding anubis so i had a crapton of anubis and i saw ur video and swapped to all anubis mining, and my god I was get 500-600 coal/copper every few ig days i checked back, digtoise was such a red herring by the community and developers, and i do actually hope he gets truely fixed cause I dont want to use anubis as an all purpose pal for main base crafting and mining (tho i am high enough level to just grab blaza now who is level 4 mining and should be better I hope u can do a test for late game mining as well)

i figured something major out pal attack animations vs ore. they all have a set animation time frame they cannot go past. its why work speed doesnt speed up their mining, but digtoise isnt negatively effected by it due to how it works in fact its the opposite. side note work speed effects animation speed, but not any of the recovery/cooldown times the animations have. the rock pits do not have an animation time frame limit on them or its recovery time is very short. what do it mean by animation time frame? basically its the time it takes the animation to start and end. using anubis as an example its animation is 3 seconds long and its cut up into 3 parts windup, attack, and recovery. work speed effects how fast the animation goes in the first two parts but not the recovery or the animation time frame. so it will move quicker, but still takes 3 seconds per attack. due to this the first two parts are shorter but the recovery animation is longer. going back to anubis his attack is: a stance and pulling back their hand, a palm strike, then a wind waving effect. that wind wave is the recovery. its hard to see just how this all works out unless you bump the work speed up by alot i only realized this after giving my anubis strange juice and pushing their work speed up to 900+ anyways how does this not negatively effect digtoise? well the number of hits it does is based on its animation speed. no other pal has a multi-hit animation. its has an invisible progress bar that needs to fill up to do a tick of damage faster animation faster the progress bar fills. this means they will do more damage with more work speed, though its a small increase. so while digtoise has a long 5 second animation time frame (longer then most) you can boost its efficiency unlike other pals. so how much does work speed effect it overall? well i only did this with two 0 stars digtoises, with one that has the passives serious, artisan, lucky, workslave and max work speed souls, its work speed stat is 195 vs a digtoise with no work speed related passives and no souls, its work speed is 70. both were used in party and against an ore node. the work speed digtoise beat the control by 10 seconds so it beat it by two animation loops its small but will add up. lastly digtoise does do more damage if you condense it, including in base damage. in base it goes from 1-2 at 0 stars to 7-8 at 4 stars in party its more notable going from 17-20 to 40-70 (the skill can push it to over 100) so while its not good at base level putting in a far bit of investment it will be alot better.

My current theory for why this is occuring is that, from what I can tell attack doesn't effect the damage to nodes for other pals. But the headband for digtoise makes it so the damage of his spin is effected by attack. Since a random level 26 digtoise with no passives was doing around 26 damage when I used him. But I have seen videos of him doing 40-50 damage per tick. I think the reason he does 1 damage is because that is the base number before being modified by attack.

If you are going to leave the base to the pals, yes, digtoise is a subpar choice, but if you have him in your party and toss him out, he goes from doing 1-2 damage to 20-24 roughly per damage tick and will chew through the metal nodes MUCH faster than anything else. When I want to afk for a bit, i'll hop over to the metal base and toss him out then go do whatever I need to do. Usually every node has been mined by the time i'm back and I can assist in picking up the ore. Usually can get 3-5 hundred ore in just a few minutes then just wait for the respawn.

They do need to fix Digtoise, specifically for "player not present at base" situations. The reason he eats more food is obvious though. Not saying he *should* eat so much more food, just that the reason is fairly easy to sus out. So, using stamina makes you hungrier. Any time your stamina bar is regenerating (So any time it's not at 100%) you burn extra food from your satiety bar and get hungry faster. When Digtoise mines, he uses hit actual partner skill to do it, even though he's not in your party, and that partner skill uses a ton of stamina since it's also an attack you can use in combat. So then he has to regen stamina, and he gets hungry. But yeah, it does make him quite inefficient.

My pancakes ain't that good. I only stuck with pancakes for these set of trials because my last trial had them. I'll try different food, but honestly the only difference is nutrition and sanity values, as well as stated sanity depletion buff.

My personal favorite Pal set up for my mining base is a bunch of Reptyros and Helzapers since Reptyro since Reptyro has only lvl 3 mining and lvl 3 fire so he only focuses on mining till I come request to smelt ore and I have plenty of fire users to come, and Helzapher being ONLY lvl 3 is awesome since it won’t get distracted and focus solely on transporting the ore/coal. And for sulfur and quarts I just go out with Bowser the Digtoise to a location in the volcano and snow area. Oh and I save all of my Anubisis for my base where I can make full use of his handicraft level 4

what about Blazemut for mining? its lvl 4 mining pair that with Helzephyr to transport its a great combo in my opinion. i do have a base set up just for faming and breeding btw to keep everything fed with Pizza which is a great food source for SAN as well as Working

I don't think they did anything to him. I use ice reptyro and notice he farms much more even if you aren't near the base. I'm on that mountain with the ore and coal veins, with 5 ice reptyros and before the update if I left and came back after couple nights I would only see about 50 ore, now I come back to 700.

While other Pals do the same damage when you throw them out from your party compared to in the base, Digtoise actually still deals only 1/10 of it's damage even without the headband. They probably wanted to balance it out for the base and completely gutted it on accident.

Hey Rednu, great videos. But there is one thing that doessent seem to be clear. Does passive skills affect mining? And if so what are the best passives for farming? That would be a great video if you do some research and testing. :)

In the case of Digtoise, they do. Digtoise will increase his DPS towards nodes (not Stone Pit) with more Work Speed and more Star Ranks (by condensing). I don't have the calculations, but he still eats way more food than others. For everyone else, mining nodes is a special case, it is the only job I can think of without a progress bar. Work Speed affects everything with progress bar or has workload (crafting, Stone Pit, etc.), but with mining nodes, only the animation timing is changed without affecting the speed of attacks or damage, things reset. So there are no passives that will affect mining nodes directly, SAN, Satiety, or Movement Speed buffs are worth considering though. I'd say SAN is the most valuable. If Pals can work their food off without taking a hot spring bath, they will be very productive.

@@Rednu I see. It seems kinda hard to get propper tests of this these day doh since many pals stop working as you say and they get locked in their steps. I see a lot of oals getting stuck when harvesting. One thing that would be interesting when these things gets ironed out is to see how wel both in mining but other things like making cakes the only day and the 24 hours pals do. For instance iv used tombat a bit and its good since its mines 24/7, but as pointed out gets stuck a lot so unsure how much effective time it gets. On the same note making cakes most would say jormuntide ignis and im sure they are right but its kinda hard to get early and condense fast enogh. But On the other side a high condensed blazehowl noct that makes cakes and heats eggs 24/7 is also interesting. Its slower but has more work time. Its a delicate balance finding the best of everything, specially when the game is so new and somewhat glitchy still. But thank you for the great vids! :)

Digtoise is the only pal In the game that scales off workspeed when hitting ore nodes. Also uncondensed distoise isn't great but when he has been upgraded he destroys ore so fast that you need him and only him to run an ore farm each day.

I would even say 2 bases with a portable fact travel "base" for the third, whether that be "Oh I want to farm pals on the islands that have no fast travel spots like gathering a bunch of Penkings from the southern sanctuary" or be oh my bags are full and I am way to far away from a Fast travel spot let me just create a temporary base to be able to fast travel to one of my real bases. Currently I am using one "base" just as a spot to quickly get way more ore than I can smelt because I have a "base" set up where I can quickly hop on my rushboar destroy 10 ore veins for about 600 ores then fast travel back chucking all the ores into a chest next to the Palbox because my main base I just built everything upwards and the only reason I even use a second real base is to have twice as many Pals auto doing stuff otherwise I would have just done 1 base + 1 fast travel to the 10 ore viens + 1 movable fast travel point.

A few things I am sure others may have already pointed out, but are very relevant in respect to digtoise behavior. Not everything on paper is going to be good at everything in all real world circumstances. Digtoise mines very differently than other pals, and this is on purpose so all pals are not copy-paste "what you see is what you get" versions of each other. Because pals use hunger and sanity _per hit_ while performing tasks like mining, digtoise's spin causes it to lose an enormous amount of hunger and sanity very quickly. Combining this effect with the knowledge that digtoise only does 1 damage while auto-mining as a worker, and we have what appears to be extremely poor performance at a glance. However, the stone pit works on a "work effort" system, instead of a damage dealt system. So at a stone pit, digtoise is by far the fastest stone miner due to extremely fast "hits" combined with a level 3 work score. Additionally, with the headband item, the player's personal digtoise in the party is the fastest ore miner in the game, with or without the use of the "F" ability. For these reasons, I don't think it is a bug that digtoise performs the way it does. I believe it is an intentional nuance to have a pal that isn't a great "ore" miner at a camp, but has a role in the player's party like a power-tool. If you separate ore mining bases and bases that have a stone pit and plop down 1 or 2 digtoise at the stone pit, you'll have 9999 stone stacks filling up several chests with a few hours. That stone can be used as is, or as an infinite source of paldium for later crafting. Digtoise isn't "bad" at mining, it is just specifically good at mining stone or as a tool for players on the move to harvest ore nodes extremely quickly rather than a best-in-slot everything miner. I think that is a great choice by the developers because it gives reason to use more than 1 type of pal for camps, diversity is important or else every camp becomes the same 5 pals which is a recipe for boring world design.

This is fair and you're accurate. I still don't feel like the nuance is intentional, but I'm not an enemy of nuance or pal-specific quirks. That all said, these are observations and a conclusion formed from testing. I still want to affirm everyone's suspicions and inform others that this is a pal you ought never to set up an auto ore farm with.

I noticed it pretty early on, if you deploy Digtoise from your party he does the expected damage to rocks, however, if deployed on the base, Digtoise will do 1 damage per tick which is absurd. So now I just have around 10 Reptyro with 5 carriers and then deploy Digtoise from my own pocket for better output.

Here's something strange, Digtoise seems to get better at auto mining as you increase his star level/rank/whatever its called. And of course once he's maxed out, he gets DRAMATICALLY better sine he's also lvl 4 mining at that point, and were talking going from 2 damage per tick at 0 stars, to 7-8 per tick at 4 stars. The strange thing is that Anubis (the only other i've tested so far) doesn't get better with each star, rather, only when he gets to mining lvl 4. It was very limited testing, letting Digtoise do 2 spins, counting how long that took and letting Anubis work for that long and compare. And i also have the health of nodes turned all the way down, and the amount of gathered drops turned all the way up. Not sure how that might affect the results. *edit: Good video btw, looking forward to the next one on late-game mining pals

Took me literal days to convince my clan leader of this. Been saying Reptyro was better since we first added Digtoise to base, but it took me doing a 1 hour test only to get 10 ore with Diggy boi and 270 with Reptar

That sucks but I still love the turtle, I think it's cool af and will keep a couple on the ore base regardless. Devs are quick to fix stuff, they fixed the effigy bug, they will fix Digtoise in a timely manner too, so keep a couple good ones in reserve for when it happens.

I still use Digtoise for auto stone farming cause 2 running mining adds does very well, the issue is the mining adds in base will take priority over natural mining nodes. As for ore farming its true that the pal struggles and breaks often, as does any ore or kindling job pal when left for a prolonged amount of time.

From what Ive tested, it feels like when assigned to the base, he doesnt get the damage buff from his mining perk but keeps the targeting ai. I noticed this at my coal base he does the same damage to trees

I use Blazamuts (mining 4, and can be picked up at the northern sanctuary) for mining who completely shred through nodes. It's a little strange that everyone seems to fixate on the same mining Pals I'd rather they fix the trees that were broken for base Pals in the last patch. They can whack them all day and the damn things never seem to break or drop wood.

That boar Pal is probably the best way to get ore. He can smash the whole rock very quickly, and sometimes you can get a few of them.

very early in the game, perhaps, yes. while in your party, digtoise blows him out of the water. automated in your base, he doesn't even have enough mining skill to get any ore at all

@@rwulf Digtoise can break a rock when he's with you, but he costs a fortune in food. The Boar can run through at least two nodes every time you have it dash, and it easts much less. You can clear out a spot way faster than you can with any of the other Pals.

@@Azmeaiel I think the best way to get ores is use your last base as a floating warp junction. What I do is keep the stuff I need to make a base computer, and then whenever I want to bring tons of ore to my home base I throw down the Pal computer mine all the ore in less than 2 mins, and then I warp it back in seconds, and then I warp back and take down the Pal computer. My other two bases are a farm/breeding base, and of course an auto-mine, but if you need thousands of ore right now for some reason they will not quickly do it automatically. You will wait hours hours because there aren't enough nodes anywhere to auto-produce on the same level as field mining. On the other hand I can produce thousands in 30 mins in the field, and that's not just regular ore. I'm talking about Every kind that you need. Coal, sulfur, rock, wood, Paldium, fiber, and ore.
