Good gravy! Why is everyone always getting their panties in a bunch? I watched the video you spoke of and you were merely explaining various lids and how these lids worked. I believe you said a commenter had asked about using the gasket with the metal lids. So you gave us the pros and cons of various lids and lid/ gasket combinations and left it to us to make decisions for ourselves. You told us what worked and what didn't work. We have all been put in a quandary by the Ball company ( and others ) who seem unwilling to sell boxes of lids. We know Ball has lids because stores are getting the jars with the lids and rings. Due to this lack of lids, some bought lids off Amazon that turned out to be very poor quality. I would surmise that some of these people may be the ones seeking the gaskets. Well, I will get off my soapbox now. Happy canning everyone!

The world has gone to hell in a hand basket. People are absolutely hyper defensive believing they are being "told" what to do. I and so many others only looked at you video and saw what the results were and realize 100% that it is our choice to do what you did or not. Never once did I feel you were approving it for all. If you choose to do it thats your choice. I choose not to and that is my choice as any choice is everyone else's. It makes me so sick to see this kind of reaction people are having to something so minor. Also the same kind of reaction to things are not so minor. Its like the past year and a half has knocked many many people off the crazy tree and they hit every branch on the way down. You just keep doing what you do and need mind the crazies.

I understand that your goal is to use the scientific method to explore and test safe canning methods for all of us who can. That is very valuable to many of us canners. I appreciate that so much. I can also see the viewpoint of a family company that may feel threatened by what they might see as a liability. It would be great if perhaps the family company would see this as a new avenue for their products, and test them as you suggest. Goodwill toward their customers means a lot to some of us. Just remember, we appreciate your fair and open-minded ways of teaching!

I think that the thing that has struck me most with the ‘response video’ that Leisa did, is that she is a self confessed ‘rebel canner’ she has created videos which show her canning goods against US gov advice; she then says, apparently, to test things yourself. Isn’t that a tad hypocritical? Especially, as she states in the video, that she’s now removing those video’s - one can only presume because she knows they are wrong. The issue I have with it is that many will have watched and followed suit. She also mentions probably still rebel canning herself - again suggesting it is ok. I also find it amazing that she’s not watched your video, and that Tattler chose her, above a pr agency or social media specialist, to address this for them and ‘spread the word’ as someone commented. I am not yet a canner, mainly because I don’t know which canning device to buy (UK) but even as a novice I was more than aware that you are testing this - with water initially. I am however aware that a lot of seals fail, that there are false seals. So every single canned item could have failed. If a gasket is a good close fit and creates a vacuum, then surely someone somewhere needs to test it. It would make sense for Tattler to do that but two things spring to mind. A) they want their lids to sell. B) They don’t recognise they’re missing a huge opportunity here. If they sold the gaskets for use on other lids, there will come a point when folk need more lids. Either because they’ve run out or they’re old and need to be discarded. In that situation i’d buy new lids at the same time as the gaskets ie Tattlers. I appreciate your integrity. I appreciate your swift response. I appreciate that you are not at anyones behest by not accepting sponsorship. I appreciate, more than anything, the grace and kind manner in which you addressed this issue. Calm, quiet, honest response with a level of graciousness that is sorely lacking from others, not least Tattler, who really could have approached you about this themselves instead of sending out an email to a fb user full of exclamation marks (read out as part of the text) All Tattler had to do was contact you, say something along the lines of “interesting concept. Could you do us a huge favour and remove your video for now? We’ll look into this and so some testing and are eager to see what your tests show too” common courtesy. But a company asking another youtube account to deal with their issue? 😳 Really? (At least that is what appears to have happened according to one comment on your channel.)

Thank you for all that you do and the teaching of the science behind the rules. It is much easier to follow rules when one knows and understand the why of things.Continue your good work even with the bumps that occur along the way. Being that you are testing things, how about doing a test using the tattler reusable rings: 1. With various brands of lids from the best to the ones that we don't recommend. 2. Use lids where the sealing medium is considered unusable for normal canning to slightly used to brand new lids for each brand. 3. One must specify that used lids does not mean bent, dinted or otherwise damaged lids. 4. I would think also it might be a good idea to try various types contents that have a bit of fat as well because should there be any seepage but seals, how long would it stay sealed. canning jars. will interpret Having said all this, I realize this could be costly too. Now I am curious and I hope, that although there is an uproar across the board,, that your hack will make the companies aware that there is a particular need out there. Although they do have a very good product that people will continue using, perhaps they really should look into this a bit more seriously and serve the people's needs even better. It is not the person who kept looking for gold during the gold rush but the one who sold the shovels who made the money.

Our neighbour over the road a that time was a retired machanic, he shown my dad how to use an old cereal box and gasket rubber cement to create a new one. Mental and emotional stability. Especially emotional stability. I am 67 now but it took me decades to learn to take criticism rationally and objectively, analyzing whether there be any validity. If valid, then it is up to me to correct/modify, which can only work toward perfection. (Not that perfection is actually obtainable.) If not valid, then water off the duck's back. That is what took so long to achieve ... emotional equilibrium with no lasting emotional damage. And so I watch you sail through this criticism and, at the end, calmly state with a smile that you will carry on with your experiment. And that to the good of all of us who watch your informative and knowledgeable videos. I was thinking that 'this lady has already been through much fire' ... water off the duck's back. You rock, Pam! You are objective, logical and think critically - and that is why there are some ruffled feathers. You are an exception to the rule. I watched your hack video and found it to be informative and I did not in any way think that you were promoting the hack. You were just sharing facts and left it up to all of us to determine whether or not our abilities to understand the principles of how a vacuum seal works would generate a level of comfort, or not. Three quick things: (1) I didn’t go rushing out to order gaskets, but instead felt that Ball has been “dropping the ball” (no pun intended) and that is why we are having the conversations we are having regarding lid availability, quality and ability to seal; (2) based upon previous videos on your channel and elsewhere I had already ordered a mix of 50/50 reg/wide Harvest Guard lids/gaskets (that is apparently the son of the guy who owns Tattler; and that design is the design that had been tested and approved in the universitey extensions or by the USDA (not sure which)); (3) here is something to make you smile: Weck has come out with new jars! I swore I was not buying any more jars this year, but these new Quadro Jars are beckoning with a siren song. Check them out! (this is the url, but safe surfing says not to click URLs unless you trust them, just putting it here for reference: weckjars.com/product-category/quadro/). Finally - I bought that maslin pan and am looking forward to canning apple pie filling sometime within the next week (my current pot is a bit too small).

Yes tattler lid systems can be more difficult to use... My personal application is to test the lids after canning... but I also double check the seals three weeks later to insure the seal held.. I never store my "canned foods" with the bands intentionally to give that individual ring the opportunity to fail....If it passes the three week test, (and a few haven't) I have yet to find a lid failure...But I always listen for the vacuum release hiss Another tip is I always check the lids for the little "barbs" and file them smooth with an emery board.. Those little "barbs" can interfere with the tightening of the bands "post cook" and break the seal
