I’ve visited Pamplin when it first opened. Three things stick out to me. 1. Trial by Fire is freaking scary. You stand across from “the enemy” ( yes, I grew-up in Richmond. Union forces were often referred to as those people (Lee) or the enemy) and when they fire at you there is the whizz of minie balls and puffs of air that simulate passing minie balls. Really eerie. 2. Before you enter there is a display that shows the number of killed by state. The numbers are staggering. 3. There is a live firing of a Napoleon 12-pounder that you can stand pretty close to; fired a couple times a day.

I participated in the filming of Trial by Fire. It was filmed in California with volunteers from the Fort Tejon historical society.

Visited with my son last fall on a weekday, and nearly had the actual battlefield area to ourselves. The entire park is very well done!

So important to teach every American child about the War Between the States.

I grew up on land that had a line of earthworks for a boundary. I’m curious if the park has incorporated that land.

This is like watching Jeff Goldblum work as a guide at an Historical Park. I was waiting for a dinosaur to come lumbering into view. Hey! Great idea for a mash up movie: Pamplin Jurassic Park but instead of men they have Velociraptors dressed as Civil War Soldiers!

Thank you. I wish you could have shown more as opposed to just talking about it, but that is life.

Civil War camp - where you march until your feet bleed, go months without bathing or changing your clothes, eat maggoty bread, fish weevils out of your coffee and experience long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror.

Sounds a little like my first Boy Scout camp at age 12.

I bet there's a lot of folks out there wondering right now whether their ancestors were on the right side.
