There is way more going on with the symbology of this movie that was never mentioned, Ophelia means helper in ancient greek, the labyrinth, the attempted baby sacrifice, Pans character, the death and rebirth narrative is deep pagan mythology based.

This is a horrifically underrated masterpiece with a soundtrack at once gorgeous and abounding in pathos. The "Lullaby" in each of its incarnations is among the most painfully beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

The twist at the end is such a depressing punch in the gut, though.

It's funny. It's not really a twist, it's the first thing you see in the movie. By the time we get there though, it's not softer just because we know what's happening

I'm still extremely salty that Babel beat Pan's Labyrinth for the Oscar for Best Score. I don't remember anything from Babel's score, but every time I think of Pan's Labyrinth, its lullaby gets stuck in my head.

It blew minds! I remember when the video came out at Blockbuster. It had a warning on the box which made it clear that "This is not a children's movie". I still shed a tear when Mercedes is saved by her brother and the rebels.

A long time favourite... From the moment I saw it as a child, it captured me in every moment. Every piece of my soul engulfed in what I consider to be utmost beauty. The only filmmaker I wish I could meet, shake his hand, and thank him... For bringing us such wonderful architectural story telling.

Saw it at the Angelika in Dallas in '06. Just as good today as then. A real achievement.

Ashton, the way you described the movie was so brilliant, your words should be written in a book. That's how good of a storyteller you are...especially about movies. 🎬📖☺

@@Rnk_Dr What isn't there to like? It's a very well written, heart wrenching story with memorable characters. Done in the style of traditional fairy tales. And it has plenty of twists throughout that you never see coming so it stays interesting the whole way through. If all you like is big box office action films, MCU, CGI showcases, etc... then no I guess you probably won't like it. But if you like a good story, THIS is a good story.

I need to watch Pan's Labarynth again after reading "OPUS" now with a renewed understanding of the Catholic role in Fascism of Spain under Francisco Franco and their attempt to bring same fate in United States today...

What if some studio made a family friendly version of the story that acts like a Disney made story where it’s more happy and light hearted for all audiences even the ending where the main character doesn’t die in the end but she went into the portal without getting shot where she cut her hand drips her own blood

It's very ugly to the eyes and I am not hearing anything in the plot that stirs my imagination. You can't tell the history of Europe without noting what religion the locals were, and they probably were all devout Catholics. Who was killing them is the question, but it won't be asked, Who were the international terrorists coming in to kill Spanish people? Was it Communists?. A lot of people in American media used to brag that they fought In the Spanish Civil War, or, later, that their father had. That always seemed odd to me.

The movie is mostly garbage. And this video is too. Whole of the war had nothing to do with the magical story, and the magical story was shallow and stupid as well. The whole war part seems like political propaganda. And this whole video only says how music was good and you feel the child. Yes. But just this one thing doesn't redeem the movie. Total waste of time.
