The Celebrity Infinity was making its way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama Canal. This video was taken from a fixed position on the top deck of the cruise ship for more than 10 hours. It shows the whole route and operations with short explanations. The length of the video was reduced to less than 6 minutes.
President Theodore Roosevelt built Panama Canal and used the Army Corps Engineers to complete the project. The main reason for the canal was to reduce the cost and distance by not having to travel around the tip of South America for another approximately 5,000 miles. The secondary reason is for security of the country, to be above to move the navy ships quickly between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Stunning engineering isn't cheap but it doesn't normally trigger one of the biggest, if not, the biggest financial crash in human history nor bring down a government. I am not disagreeing with you, just pointing that out. The Panama Canal is another example of human determination when we need to. See Here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_scandals

Lived in Panama in the early/mid 80's when I was 12-13 and saw it first hand. It's even more impressive in person where you can really get an idea of how massive not only the canal is but the ships that go through it.

Informative and nicely done. Quite astonishing to think that the French wanted to build the canal as a straight cut through just like the Suez canal. They, the French, were masters at canal building and it's interesting that they didn't see the dam and lock solution from the beginning.

Great job done; you gave me a straight inside into the Panama Canal. I am now more than excited to make a journey to the great peace of engineering edifice in more time. I also use this opportunity to pay respect to the more the 28,000 individuals who loss their life during the construction of this work and as well to the rest of the team who made this possible. It is indeed an entirely ambitious project from the French to the Americans...Hurray!

Thank you for writing. The history of Panama Canal is inspiring showing ingenuity of human race. After realizing that digging thru the difficult terrains was not possible, the American engineers made use of the abundant rainfalls in this tropical area to lift the ships and it has been one for over 100 yrs. The medical personnel also made it possible thru solving the problems brought by mosquitos.
