It is unclear if this film was produced specifically for Pan Am (as a BEA flight is also shown in a short clip), however, the majority of footage covers several flight crews, aircraft, and operations of Pan American. This is a great look at Pan Am's Internal German Service (IGS) in the late 1960s and 1970. The IGS had thousands of German employees and a number of U.S. flight crews from 1954 to 1990. With German re-unification in 1989, along with Pan Am's dire financial situation, the operation was sold to Lufthansa in 1990.
Special thanks to Steven K. Roberts for sharing this rare film with the Pan Am Museum. Please check out his website, microship.com.
Steven acquired a rusty old 16mm film can with no label, bound for the trash, that contained a treasure... this rare 20-minute movie featuring Pan Am, circa 1970. He digitized it at 2K without sound in 2020 and got beautiful results. The detailed "Jet Set" imagery from 50 years ago is marvelous. In June 2022, he re-scanned the film to capture the optical soundtrack, used AEOlight at 24 FPS to extract a WAV, then manually synchronized audio and video files in an editor.
The Pan Am Museum thanks Steven for not only saving and restoring this film, but sharing it with us so we can share with the worldwide Pan Am community. We are currently working on an English dubbed version.
