Been riding the SS for a couple of months now (in 38c) and I completely agree with your review. These tires are outstanding off-road with the exception of mud, but the amazing thing is how well they ride on the road. All my other gravel tires have been noisy and slow on the road, but not these. They give up nothing on the road. Your review was spot-on and quite efficient. Thank you!

@@Anton.Baryshnikov I would say they seem right in line with 38c tires in other brands. Not especially wide. They measure out at 37 mm on some older Fulcrums which are 18mm internal.

Just installed the GK 38 slick on the new Hunt Gravel 30s. Easiest tire install I've ever done. No charge pump needed. Dish soap and standard track pump did the job. Nice! These have quickly risen to the top of my list for an over 40mm slick-ish tire for Michigan Coast to Coast (now in October). Plenty fast for hard sections and will certainly provide float at 43mm on the sandy sections. My Checkpoint SL5 holds up to 45 and it doesn't look like these will cake up with much dirt/mud at all.

Nice. My kind of tire then. I love my 700x38mm slicks for current road/rando/dry dirt COVID mode. @walcottav
@walcottav Жыл бұрын
@@TheAcfallejoseph Coming from road riding and for most of the unpaved segments within reach of my daily ride, 38 works for me for my mixed surface riding. The tires actually measure 39 on my rims. I find for me the 38s are a good compromise - good performance on pavement and fine for firm dry (but not deep dust/silt/sand/muddy) surfaces. If I'm under-tired for sections it adds to the challenge and I can always take the bike for a walk. You can't go wrong with either one I'd think.

I started on GK SK 43mm (probably after watching one of Jom's old reviews) - liked them, bit heavy though and really flicks up small stones into your friends faces. Then I moved to GK Slicks 38mm PLUS - even with the plus casing I still suffered quite a few punctures. They were bloody fast and light though, but found myself sliding out and going easy on dusty corners, which probably offset any gains on the straights. Finally now I'm on the new GK SS 43mm. Great middle ground but still a little bit heavy for my liking for going to climb KOMs. Just did a 322km gravel race on 21mm internal width farsports carbon wheels and ran them at 25psi rear/23front. Super comfortable...but I did bottom out and crack my front wheel on a huge block in a creek crossing, but that was totally my fault. For the reasonable price the GKs are hard to beat and mount up quite easy. Thanks Jom for the review!

Panaracer SS or Pirelli H? Intended use: Asphalt, fine gravel, occasional little muddy(ish) forest trail, but no "real" offroad though. Currently riding 25mm Conti GP classic, don't want to loose too much speed on the road but would really like some peace of mind on the rougher surfaces. (Also, gravel decents on 25mm road tyres are scary.)

I've ridden these tires in two gravel races and a couple thousand miles of training so far this season. I love the tire, but it's not holding up. After Gravel Battle, both tires were flat and each has dozens of small holes in the high wear part of the tread, and the sidewalls are weeping sealant through pinholes as well. Maybe I just got dudds.

I can’t wait until it will be available in Europe : I am die-hard fan of the Gravelking SK but since I ride more on pavement (70-30 or maybe 60-40) we are more into bike-packing than trail rides I am looking for something a bit more slick and roll fast. I bought in to this GravelKing adulation thing back in about 2015 when i bought some of the first 28mm regular tubed ones and put them on my all purpose road bike. Despite the hype, I only expected them to be reasonably fast, but I found them to be very draggy - even at 80psi (and a mile an hour slower on any tarmac ride compared with regular 'race' tyres) so they were removed and chucked in a cupboard. I also have some other Panaracer road tyres which are badged-up by Planet X and touted as 'fast rolling'. They're like riding through treacle as well. Even 40mm WTB Nanos (intended for off-road) are faster on tarmac

I wonder what the SS+ will weigh, in the northeast our gravel trail have more gravel/crushed stone then dirt. Not sure the non + version will hold up well. And would love less ting noise on the frame from my current tires the Steilacoom’s, which I’ve tried many tires and seem to come back to these or Barlow Pass. Great comfort for their weight and in endurance version very durable. But the SS thread looks very interesting might work well in crushed stone just a mater of will they be heavy like the SK+’s and will they be any faster then the Steilacoom’s, I know they are knobby looking but surprisingly good rolling compared to Maxxis Ramblers or SK+’s or WTB nano or WTB Riddler or Schwalbe G one. Curious as to your comparison to Rene Herse tires? Are the SS also a smooth or more plush ride and offer any more speed? Nice review and interesting tire.

I've ridden the original slicks on light gravel, no worries. Bear in mind, they are not the most puncture resistant.

Thank you sir for the quick reply. They advertise more puncture resistance with that reinforced sidewall. If I’m running tubeless I guess I should be ok? Between the slick and the semi slick - any noticeable speed difference on tarmac? That’s really what I’m trying to figure out. If it’s the same I may just get the semi slick.

Trouble is with all these tyres is that they puncture way to easily... I'm running wtb raddlers and they are great but even though I'm using stans sealant with glitter in it they still puncture all the time. I don't want to but I've considered fitting a set of schwalbe Marathon Plus.

Yes, shouldn't be an issue. I've run 29'er wheels with tyres from 35mm to 50mm. As an FYI, 29'and 700c are the same size, but 29'er rims generally have wider rim beds, which is why you really should run 35 or 38mm wide at minimum.
@Paddyhudson
@Paddyhudson 4 жыл бұрын
I really wish Panaracer made a 40mm size for their gravel range. 35mm expanding to 38 is ok but for a frame rated to 40mm but their 43mm expanding to 45mm probably wouldn't make it.

The GravelKing SK+ in 700x38 measured 40.6 on my dt Swiss GR 1600 wheelset, worked well on my Open UP frame. The SK+’s weren’t a favorite of mine though, felt sluggish and hard compared to the Steilacoom endurance. But the SS look interesting.

@Thomas-fy9yc 3 жыл бұрын
All the 38c GravelKings are actually ETRTO 40-622, so on a reasonably wide rim they should be at least 40. I’m not sure why they list them at 38c.
